Islamitische waarden en normen: mogelijkheden en limieten in een westerse context

While Islam in Belgium is rearticulating itself in different ways, Sunnis becoming Shiites, nominal Muslims discovering Salafism, Salafist Muslims adhering to Tariq Ramadan’s understanding of Islam, secular Belgian converting to Islam, etc., the events of 9/11, the 2004 Madrid and 2005 London bombings, the double 2015 Paris and 2016 Brussels attacks, wash away these different layers of Islam and reduce it to an ideology that is anachronistic, inherently violent and contradicts European values and norms. Already at the end of the twentieth century and particularly after 9/11, multiculturalism and particularly, the Muslim presence in Belgium goes hand in hand with mechanisms of othering, whereby Western values are presented as fundamentally different than Muslim values. The events of 9/11 resulted in a polarising debate that reduces complex international and national contexts to a civilizational matter in which Islam is presented as the cause of all social and political malaise. Quand des belgo-marocains changent de religion

Le phénomène de conversion de musulmans sunnites au chiisme semble avoir toujours existé. Ce phénomène a quelque fois pris plus d’ampleur, notamment lors de la révolution iranienne de 1979. Ces conversions sont source de tensions internationales entre autorités sunnites et chiites. A Bruxelles vivent de nombreux belgo-marocains musulmans. Certains d’entre eux ont choisi la voie de la conversion au chiisme. Pourquoi ce « changement de camp » ? Comment est-il vécu ? Quelles relations avec le monde sunnite par la suite ? Pour aborder ces questions, nous avons invité Iman Lechkar, chercheuse à la KUL et auteure d’une thèse sur les néo-chiites et néo-sunnites à Bruxelles. Muslims in Brussels: Transnational Religious Identifications and Sensibilities in the Wake of Shifting Geopolitical Dynamics in the Middle East

The presentation explores the changing religious identifications and sensibilities of Muslims in the city of Brussels. Through migration, globalization and mass media technology, the relationship of Islam, ethnicity and territory has become more complex. Social spaces of Muslims constitute diverse social, political and religious networks. Through migration, social media and other new information technology, diverse networks bring together ideas, places and people from all over the world. Belgium Muslims identify with issues that go beyond the national spatial space, resulting in enormous national and local effects of transnational developments. Since the upheavals in the Middle East dating from 2011, the Syrian civil war, the rise of ISIS and the Paris attacks, ideological differences have become more visible, sharper and played out. Local Muslim NGO’s in Brussels depart from these global dynamics to develop local activities, lectures, worshop and formation sessions to support their members in developing nuanced sensibilities and more layered identities to co-create a society based on more social cohesion and inclusivity.status: publishe

Odisee tegen racisme

ODISEE tegen racisme: het grote racismedebat op 27 november 2014 In België, evenals in vele andere Europese landen is de diversiteit van de samenleving een realiteit. Het beleid biedt niet de juiste oplossingen op de problemen waarmee mensen met een andere huidskleur of geloofsovertuiging geconfronteerd worden in het onderwijs, in de zoektocht naar werk of bij het vinden van een dak boven het hoofd. Deze uitsluitingsmechanismen die hardnekkig in stand gehouden worden, zijn onaanvaardbaar. Nationale en internationale studies alsook het Europees Hof voor de rechten van de Mens en de Raad Van State hebben ons land hierover reeds geïnterpelleerd. Desondanks stuit de roep naar rechtvaardigheid en naar gelijkwaardige behandeling van mensen vaak op onbegrip. Het Europese Netwerk Tegen Racisme (ENAR) en Odisee slaan de handen in elkaar en houden op donderdag 27 november, 18.00-20.30 u een groot racismedebat. Tariq Ramadan : tussen ratio en geloof

In zijn lezing zal Tariq Ramadan uitvoerig aandacht besteden aan het vraagstuk van de integratie van moslims in Westerse samenlevingen. Wat kunnen we in dit opzicht verwachten van de recente revoluties in het Midden-Oosten? Hoe zullen deze de relaties tussen de Arabische Wereld en het Westen veranderen en wat betekent dit voor de miljoenen moslims in Europa? Wanneer we met zijn ogen naar het Vlaams onderwijs kijken, valt vooral op dat het socio-economische ongelijkheid reproduceert. Dat bleek ook uit het recente Pisa-rapport. Hoe verder?
