    Competition and facilitation between the marine nitrogen-fixing <i>cyanobacterium</i> Cyanothece and its associated bacterial community

    N2-fixing cyanobacteria represent a major source of new nitrogen and carbon for marine microbial communities, but little is known about their ecological interactions with associated microbiota. In this study we investigated the interactions between the unicellular N2-fixing cyanobacterium Cyanothece sp. Miami BG043511 and its associated free-living chemotrophic bacteria at different concentrations of nitrate and dissolved organic carbon and different temperatures. High temperature strongly stimulated the growth of Cyanothece, but had less effect on the growth and community composition of the chemotrophic bacteria. Conversely, nitrate and carbon addition did not significantly increase the abundance of Cyanothece, but strongly affected the abundance and species composition of the associated chemotrophic bacteria. In nitrate-free medium the associated bacterial community was co-dominated by the putative diazotroph Mesorhizobium and the putative aerobic anoxygenic phototroph Erythrobacter and after addition of organic carbon also by the Flavobacterium Muricauda. Addition of nitrate shifted the composition toward co-dominance by Erythrobacter and the Gammaproteobacterium Marinobacter. Our results indicate that Cyanothece modified the species composition of its associated bacteria through a combination of competition and facilitation. Furthermore, within the bacterial community, niche differentiation appeared to play an important role, contributing to the coexistence of a variety of different functional groups. An important implication of these findings is that changes in nitrogen and carbon availability due to, e.g., eutrophication and climate change are likely to have a major impact on the species composition of the bacterial community associated with N2-fixing cyanobacteria

    International audienceThe responses of algae to herbicides depend on the sensitivity of each species, but competition within algal communities may be an important regulator of the effects of herbicides on aquatic systems. The impact of herbicides on algae also depends on abiotic factors like nutrients, light, and temperature. We examined the tolerance of the alga Oscillatoria limnetica Lemmermann to the photosystem II inhibitor herbicide atrazine under different culture conditions to assess those interactions between herbicides and biotic and abiotic factors. The density of the cyanobacterium O. limnetica was determined in natural phytoplanktonic assemblages and in unialgal cultures in medium containing 10 ÎĽg/L atrazine. Experiments (total of 13) were conducted in spring and early and late summer, during which the effect of atrazine varied in nature and intensity. The growth of the cyanobacterium was always inhibited in cold experiments, whereas it was stimulated in warm experiments within the natural phytoplankton assemblage, but unaffected in pure culture. Laboratory experiments with unialgal culture showed that the sensitivity to atrazine increased as the temperature decreased. Phytoplankton community structure, interactions between species, and environmental parameters (e.g., temperature) are important factors controlling the responses of cyanobacteria to the herbicide. These interactions between sensitivity to herbicides and environmental factors may reduce or emphasize the effects of pollution in aquatic systems. Thus, the ecotoxicological relevance of herbicides in aquatic systems is quite complex and cannot be assessed by single-species short-term laboratory toxicological tests

    During the Tramanor cruise, in July 1988, seawater and particle samples were collected along a vertical profile (530 m depth) located in the Skagerrak, a crossing-area for different water-masses and particle pools. A sampling strategy was developed to ensure the homogeneity of the different sets of subsamples subjected to analysis by closely-coupled complementary techniques: turbidimetry, granulometry, scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations, Tracor analyses, particulate organic carbon and nitrogen measurements, and neutron activation analysis (NAA). The Baltic outflow is found in the topmost 20 m water-column (salinity approximately equals 23.5; temperature approximately equals 18 degree C) overlying North Sea waters (salinity approximately equals 35; temperature approximately equals 6 degree C). Surface waters undergo a plankton bloom, dominated by Dinoflagellates and Coccolithophoridae. The former, characterized by high C/N ratios ( approximately equals 15; cellulosic thecae), play a significant role in the biological recycling of Zn. The latter accumulate over the halocline as typically observed in frontal structures. The detrital phase mainly consists of clay minerals.     Unusual presentation of a first Branchial cleft cyst associated with an abnormal bony canal -a case report-

    Abstract Background First branchial cleft anomalies are rare, accounting for only 10% of all branchial cleft anomalies. We report an even more rare and unique case of a branchial cleft cyst with features of both first and second arch derivatives. Case presentation A 6-year-old boy presented to us with a left conductive hearing loss associated with pre-tympanic keratin debris and an ipsilateral painful cervical mass. He had a past medical history of left ear surgery for presumed cholesteatoma 2 years prior and left neck abscess drainage 6 months prior. CT and MRI revealed a lesion originating in the external auditory canal and extending cervically through a bony canal located medial to the facial nerve and terminating as a parapharyngeal cyst. The complete removal was accomplished in one surgical stage consisting of three distinct steps: robotic assisted transoral resection of the pharyngeal cyst, an endaural approach and a parotidectomy approach. Conclusion We believe that our detailed description of this rare first branchial cleft cyst with pharyngeal extension, possibly a hybrid case between a first and second branchial cyst, can serve as a valuable tool to Otolaryngologists – Head and Neck Surgeons who come across a similar unusual presentations

    Keys for successful publication in Eur Ann Otorhinolaryngol Head Neck Dis: A STROBE analysis of peer reviews of articles submitted in 2020-2021.

    International audienceObjective :To evaluate reviewing and editorial decision for articles submitted to the European Annals of Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Diseases.Materials and methods :A retrospective analysis was made of reviewers’ comments on 1,133 scientific articles (700 original articles, 96 literature reviews, and 337 case reports), originating from 69 countries, consecutively submitted on-line between January 1st, 2020 and December 31st, 2021. The main objective was to document the acceptance rate and decision time. Accessory objectives were to synthesize the main comments and to screen for correlations between acceptance and the main characteristics of first authors, articles and reviewers’ comments.Results :In total, 4.1% of submitted articles were accepted. Median decision time differed significantly (P < 0.0001), at 1 month in case of refusal and 4 months in case of acceptance. Reviewers mentioned failure to adhere to the journal's authors’ guide, to use the appropriate EQUATOR guidelines and to adopt the recommended P < 0.005 significance threshold in 94.8%, 54.2%, and 39.9% of cases, respectively. On multivariate analysis, 3 variables significantly impacted acceptance, which increased from 1.3% to 44.6% (P < 0.0001) when an appropriate EQUATOR guideline was used and from 0.3% to 57.4% (P < 0.0001) when the significance threshold was set at P < 0.005, and decreased from 10.5% to 1.1% (P = 0.0001) when the article did not originate from a French-speaking country (member of the Francophonie organization).Conclusion :Adhesion to modern scientific medical writing rules increased acceptance rates for articles in the European Annals of Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Diseases. Teaching modern scientific medical writing needs to be enhanced in otorhinolaryngology
