Radiation osteitis of the clavicle
The bone alterations in the region of the clavicle (3 cases) are similar to those we have observed and described elsewhere in the skeleton i.e., the mandible, maxillary and ethmoid bones. Rarefaction is the result of three different types of bone destruction: osteoclasia, a kind of osteocytic osteolysis only observed after irradiation and obviously related with infection, and a pure demineralization of the osseous tissue by contact with pus. Reconstruction processes, although unable to prevent spontaneous fracture, are also present and correspond to islets of chondroid tissue surrounded by lamellar bone. However, these recently deposited calcified tissues are already necrotic since most of their lacunae are empty.
Small bowel stromal tumour revealed by a lower gastrointestinal bleeding
Small bowel stromal tumour must be systematically researched in the presence of obscure and persistent low gastrointestinal bleeding despite a normal endoscopic examination (OGDF and colonoscopy). Video capsule endoscopy is the best diagnosis examination; if it is not available a CT enterography could be useful. Surgical treatment is effective on localized and weak malignancy small bowel stromal tumours
Analog of Magnetoelectric Effect in High-Tc Granular Superconductors
We propose the existence of an electric-field induced nonlinear magnetization
in a weakly coupled granular superconductor due to time-parity violation. As
the field increases the induced magnetization passes from para- to dia-magnetic
behavior. We discuss conditions under which this effect could be experimentally
measured in high-temperature superconductors.Comment: REVTEX (epsf style), 1 PS figure; to appear in Europhysics Letter
Nonlinear Seebeck Effect in a Model Granular Superconductor
The change of the Josephson supercurrent density of a weakly-connected
granular superconductor in response to externally applied arbitrary thermal
gradient dT/dx (nonlinear Seebeck effect) is considered within a model of 3D
Josephson junction arrays. For dT/dx>(dT/dx)_c, where (dT/dx)_c is estimated to
be of the order of 10^4 K/m for YBCO ceramics with an average grain's size of
10 microns, the weak-links-dominated thermopower S (Seebeck coefficient) is
predicted to become strongly dT/dx-dependent.Comment: REVTEX, no figure
SCLC extensive disease – treatment guidance by extent or/and biology of response?
In extensive disease of small cell lung cancer a doubling of the one-year-survival rate was reported in August 2007 by prophylactic cranial irradiation applied to patients who experienced any response to initial chemotherapy. We discuss the treatment concept of extensive disease in the face of the latest results and older studies with additional thoracic irradiation in this subgroup. A randomized trial with prophylactic cranial irradiation published in 1999 demonstrated an improvement of 5-year-overall-survival for complete responders (at least at distant levels) receiving additional thoracic radiochemotherapy compared to chemotherapy alone (9.1% vs. 3.7%). But, these results were almost neglected and thoracic radiotherapy was not further investigated for good responders of extensive disease. However, in the light of current advances by prophylactic cranial irradiation these findings are noteworthy on all accounts. Considering both, a possible interpretation of these data could be a survival benefit of local control by simultaneous thoracic radiochemotherapy in the case of improved distant control due to chemotherapy and prophylactic cranial irradiation. Furthermore the question arises whether the tumor biology indicated by the response to chemotherapy should be integrated in the present classification
Mapping Chemical Selection Pathways for Designing Multicomponent Alloys: an informatics framework for materials design
A data driven methodology is developed for tracking the collective influence of the multiple attributes of alloying elements on both thermodynamic and mechanical properties of metal alloys. Cobalt-based superalloys are used as a template to demonstrate the approach. By mapping the high dimensional nature of the systematics of elemental data embedded in the periodic table into the form of a network graph, one can guide targeted first principles calculations that identify the influence of specific elements on phase stability, crystal structure and elastic properties. This provides a fundamentally new means to rapidly identify new stable alloy chemistries with enhanced high temperature properties. The resulting visualization scheme exhibits the grouping and proximity of elements based on their impact on the properties of intermetallic alloys. Unlike the periodic table however, the distance between neighboring elements uncovers relationships in a complex high dimensional information space that would not have been easily seen otherwise. The predictions of the methodology are found to be consistent with reported experimental and theoretical studies. The informatics based methodology presented in this study can be generalized to a framework for data analysis and knowledge discovery that can be applied to many material systems and recreated for different design objectives
Resonance-free Region in scattering by a strictly convex obstacle
We prove the existence of a resonance free region in scattering by a strictly
convex obstacle with the Robin boundary condition. More precisely, we show that
the scattering resonances lie below a cubic curve which is the same as in the
case of the Neumann boundary condition. This generalizes earlier results on
cubic poles free regions obtained for the Dirichlet boundary condition.Comment: 29 pages, 2 figure
Charging Effects and Quantum Crossover in Granular Superconductors
The effects of the charging energy in the superconducting transition of
granular materials or Josephson junction arrays is investigated using a
pseudospin one model. Within a mean-field renormalization-group approach, we
obtain the phase diagram as a function of temperature and charging energy. In
contrast to early treatments, we find no sign of a reentrant transition in
agreement with more recent studies. A crossover line is identified in the
non-superconducting side of the phase diagram and along which we expect to
observe anomalies in the transport and thermodynamic properties. We also study
a charge ordering phase, which can appear for large nearest neighbor Coulomb
interaction, and show that it leads to first-order transitions at low
temperatures. We argue that, in the presence of charge ordering, a non
monotonic behavior with decreasing temperature is possible with a maximum in
the resistance just before entering the superconducting phase.Comment: 15 pages plus 4 fig. appended, Revtex, INPE/LAS-00
