    Maternal Guilt: An Existential Phenomenological Study of the Early Experiences of First-Time Mothers

    The present study is an existential phenomenological investigation of the experiences of maternal guilt of five first-time mothers with infant children. Maternal guilt is a powerful, pervasive, and complex phenomenon that effects and is experienced by mothers in different ways. This research explores the experiences of these five mothers in feeling guilt related to being a mother and, using an adapted research methodology utilizing Focusing Technique (Gendlin, 1981), their embodied reflections about a particular memory of feeling maternal guilt. This study utilizes procedures explicated by Colaizzi (1978), Giorgi & Giorgi (2003), Todres (2007), von Eckartsberg (1998), Walsh (1995; 2004) and Wertz (1984). All participants provided data via a written account of a particular memory of feeling a sense of guilt related to being a mother, an individual interview which incorporated a modified Focusing component, and written and verbal feedback related to the write-up of the provisional thematic analysis of the interview. The interpreted analyses of the five interviews indicate seven formulated themes; physical and emotional connection to their babies, intense feelings of responsibility, feelings of being divided, multi-dimensionality of guilt with other emotions, pre-verbal miscommunication, anxiety over the unknown in the beginning, and social expectations and comparisons. The findings suggest that the process of embodied reflection regarding a new mother\u27s emotional experiences of guilt can foster important awareness for how she can care for her own and her child\u27s needs. Relationships between contemporary cultural discourses on motherhood and philosophical interpretations of guilt are discussed. Implications for creating networks of support and community for new parents are also explored

    Levinas begins Totality and Infinity with a haunting allusion from the 19th century French poet Arthur Rimbaud, “though the true life is absent”, we are in the world. This lamentation is a fitting beginning for his exposition of a radical reformulation of an Ethics that precedes all thought, language, or systematic attempts to cast morality as a Truth. Similarly, Martin Luther King Jr. presented a lamentation for a dream of a world where the transcendence of race, creed, or classification of any kind could allow children to grow up to be first ethical human beings in relation to one another before identities. The source of this sorrow and lament points also to its relent; if we can dream and then imagine this “true life”, then we can begin to devote our strivings to bringing it to life, to manifesting something that is prior to our means-to-an-end destructive proclivities, in other words, an end to war. Both visionaries asked us to participate in the imagining or dreaming of a different future while drawing from a past that was absorbed in our collective ancient memories, visions of what was perhaps once ours as our ontogenetic and phylogenetic indigenous birthright, the “true life” of our human interconnection and interdependency

    Power System Dynamic Simulations Using a Parallel Two-Level Schur-Complement Decomposition

    As the need for faster power system dynamic simulations increases, it is essential to develop new algorithms that exploit parallel computing to accelerate those simulations. This paper proposes a parallel algorithm based on a two-level, Schur-complement-based, domain decomposition method. The two-level partitioning provides high parallelization potential (coarse- and fine-grained). In addition, due to the Schur-complement approach used to update the sub-domain interface variables, the algorithm exhibits high global convergence rate. Finally, it provides significant numerical and computational acceleration. The algorithm is implemented using the shared-memory parallel programming model, targeting inexpensive multi-core machines. Its performance is reported on a real system as well as on a large test system combining transmission and distribution networks

    Analysis of surgical complications after 397 hepatic transplantations

    The results of 397 consecutive orthotopic hepatic transplantations in 333 recipients were reviewed. One or more surgical complications developed in 172 of 323 patients (55 per cent), excluding ten intraoperative deaths. The six month mortality rate among the patients with surgical complications (55 of 172; 32 per cent) was statistically higher than that among patients without such complications (16 of 151; 11 per cent) (p < 0.001; chi-square, 58.36). Surgical complications including exploratory laparotomy for bleeding or infection in 74 (22 per cent), reconstruction of the bile duct for biliary obstruction or leakage in 55 (17 per cent), external biliary drainage for biliary leakage in four (1 per cent), tracheostomy in 80 (24 per cent), thoracotomy in 12 (4 per cent) and splenectomy in seven (2 per cent). The incidence of biliary obstruction (16 per cent mortality rate) and leakage (48 per cent mortality rate) was 18 per cent (34 of 193) and 2 per cent (four of 193) each after choledochocholedochostomy, which was 3 per cent (five of 187) and 9 per cent (17 of 187) each choledochojejunostomy. Biliary obstruction (16 per cent mortality rate) was more common after choledochocholedochostomy (p < 0.005; chi-square, 23.01), whereas the incidence of more serious biliary leakage (48 per cent mortality rate) was higher after choledochojejunostomy (p < 0.005; chi-square, 8.97). It is concluded that orthotopic hepatic transplantation remains an unforgiving extensive surgical procedure, in which choledochocholedochostomy remains the first-choice reconstruction of the biliary tract because of its lower mortality

    Analog of Magnetoelectric Effect in High-Tc Granular Superconductors

    We propose the existence of an electric-field induced nonlinear magnetization in a weakly coupled granular superconductor due to time-parity violation. As the field increases the induced magnetization passes from para- to dia-magnetic behavior.     Hemodynamic and biochemical changes during normothermic and hypothermic sanguinous perfusion of the porcine hepatic graft

    Using an ex vivo liver sanguinous perfusion system, hemodynamic and biochemical changes of the porcine livers were studied, which were preserved cold (4°C) for 24 hr in University of Wisconsin solution and reperfused with normothermic (37°C) (n=8) or hypothermic (32°C) (n=8) blood for 3 hr. Six more livers were reperfused with normothermic blood (37°C) immediately after procurement as controls. The total hepatic blood flow was adjusted to 1 ml/min/g liver weight, in which hepatic artery and portal vein flows were administered at a 1:2 ratio. In livers stored cold for 24 hr in UW solution and perfused normothermically, a statistically higher hepatic artery resistance was exhibited at 30 an 60 min after reperfusion (P<0.05), and there was lower bile output (P<0.05) at 90 and 120 min as compared to the controls. In livers stored cold for 24 hr in UW solution and perfused hypothermically, as compared to ones perfused normothermically, statistically higher hepatic- artery and portal-vein resistances (P<0.05) were observed throughout the perfusion period and 60 min= after reperfusion, respectively. In addition, bile output and oxygen consumption of these livers were statistically lower than those of ones perfused normothermically (P<O.05). In contrast, chemistries of the perfusat of livers perfused hypothermically were comparable to ones perfused normothermically. Histologic examination of the liver perfused hypothermically demonstrated hepatic arterial and/or portal venous congestion and mild-to-moderate hemorrhage in the portal triads. This study suggests that livers preserved for a prolonged period of time demonstrate a high hepatic arterial resistance shortly after revascularization, and that recipient hypothermia after revascularization may be a risk factor for the development of hepatic arterial thrombosis following liver transplantation. Video capsule endoscopy is the best diagnosis examination; if it is not available a CT enterography could be useful.     Nonlinear Seebeck Effect in a Model Granular Superconductor

    The change of the Josephson supercurrent density of a weakly-connected granular superconductor in response to externally applied arbitrary thermal gradient dT/dx (nonlinear Seebeck effect) is considered within a model of 3D Josephson junction arrays. For dT/dx>(dT/dx)_c, where (dT/dx)_c is estimated to be of the order of 10^4 K/m for YBCO ceramics with an average grain's size of 10 microns, the weak-links-dominated thermopower S (Seebeck coefficient) is predicted to become strongly dT/dx-dependent.Comment: REVTEX, no figure
