    Geometric control condition for the wave equation with a time-dependent observation domain

    We characterize the observability property (and, by duality, the controllability and the stabilization) of the wave equation on a Riemannian manifold Ω,\Omega, with or without boundary, where the observation (or control) domain is time-varying. We provide a condition ensuring observability, in terms of propagating bicharacteristics. This condition extends the well-known geometric control condition established for fixed observation domains. As one of the consequences, we prove that it is always possible to find a time-dependent observation domain of arbitrarily small measure for which the observability property holds. From a practical point of view, this means that it is possible to reconstruct the solutions of the wave equation with only few sensors (in the Lebesgue measure sense), at the price of moving the sensors in the domain in an adequate way.We provide several illustrating examples, in which the observationdomain is the rigid displacement in Ω\Omega of a fixed domain, withspeed v,v, showing that the observability property depends both on vvand on the wave speed. Despite the apparent simplicity of some of ourexamples, the observability property can depend on nontrivial arithmeticconsiderations

    Farm Animals’ Behaviors and Welfare Analysis with AI Algorithms: A Review

    peer reviewedNumerous bibliographic reviews related to the use of AI for the behavioral detection of farm animals exist, but they only focus on a particular type of animal. We believe that some techniques were used for some animals that could also be used for other types of animals. The application and comparison of these techniques between animal species are rarely done. In this paper, we propose a review of machine learning approaches used for the detection of farm animals’ behaviors such as lameness, grazing, rumination, and so on. The originality of this paper is matched classification in the midst of sensors and algorithms used for each animal category. First, we highlight the most implemented approaches for different categories of animals (cows, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, and chickens) to inspire researchers interested to conduct investigation and employ the methods we have evaluated and the results we have obtained in this study. Second, we describe the current trends in terms of technological development and new paradigms that will impact the AI research. Finally, we critically analyze what is done and we draw new pathways of research to advance our understanding of animal’s behaviors

    Edge Computing for Cattle Behavior Analysis

    peer reviewedSmartphones, particularly iPhone, can be relevantinstruments for researchers because they are widely used aroundthe world in multiple domains of applications such as animalbehavior. iPhone are readily available on the market, containmany sensors and require no hardware development. They areequipped with high performance inertial measurement units(IMU) and absolute positioning systems analyzing user’s move-ments, but they can easily be diverted to analyze likewise thebehaviors of domestic animals such as cattle. Using smartphonesto study animal behavior requires the improvement of theautonomy to allow the acquisition of many variables at a highfrequency over long periods of time on a large number ofindividuals for their further processing through various modelsand decision-making tools. Indeed, storing, treating data at theiPhone level with an optimal consumption of energy to maximizebattery life was achieved by using edge computing on the iPhone.This processing reduced the size of the raw data by 42% onaverage by eliminating redundancies. The decrease in samplingfrequency, the selection of the most important variables andpostponing calculations to the cloud allowed also an increasein battery life by reducing of amount of data to transmit. Inall these use cases, the lambda architectures were used to ingeststreaming time series data from the Internet of Things. Cattle,farm animals’ behavior consumes relevant data from InertialMeasurement Unit (IMU) transmitted or locally stored on thedevice. Data are discharged offline and then ingested by batchprocessing of the Lambda Architecture

    Analysis of the nutritional and productive behaviour of dairy cows under three rotation bands of pastures, Pichincha, Ecuador

    This research was carried out on Pennisetum clandestinum-based pastures to identify the effect of three (3) types of stocking methods with similar forage allowance (8.2 kg of dry matter for 100 kg of live weight) but differing by the occupation times of the rotations (3 h, 24 h, and continuous) on the behaviour and the production of dairy cows. The experimental scheme consisted in three herds of four Holstein Friesian cows grazing three paddocks, one per rotationtype, for one week and replicated three times in a cross-over design. Pasture height and biomass were measured before and after each grazing week and on a daily basis, two cows per herd were monitored during daytime with activity sensors and their milk production was recorded. The main results showed that in all treatments the cows reduced the height of the sward by 40% on average. The cows in the continuous treatment spent more time in meals and tended to have higher average speed during the day than in the 3-h rotation ascribed to a higher exploration of the whole gradable area every day in the continuous treatment and to more time idling animals in the 3-h treatment in anticipation of the opening of new areas to graze over the course of day. Despite those difference in activity, milk production did not differ neither in quantity with an average of 12.4 0.14 kg per day, nor in quality (i.e., fat, protein, non-fatty solids, total solids). We conclude that under our grazing conditions with an intermediate forage allowance and low producing cows, applying a labour intensive stocking method requiring to open new areas every 3 hours does not lead to a significant production increase

    Evaluation of the ingestive behaviour of the dairy cow under two systems of rotation with slope

    The ingestive behaviour of grazing animals is modulated by the vegetation characteristics, topography and the type of stocking method. This research was carried out in 2019, at the Rumipamba CADER-UCE. It aimed to evaluate the impact of two contrasting stocking methods of dairy cows grazing a pasture with an average of slope >8.5%. Four dairy cows were set to graze a 0.4 ha paddock for 5 days for continuous stocking methods, while for the electric fence methods the dairy cows were restricted to 0.2 ha and the fence was moved uphill every 3 hours, repeating this process four times a day. Cow were equipped with activity sensors for 12 h per day. The whole procedure was repeated 2 times after realizing an equalization cuts and both paddocks, a rest time of 30 days and a random reassignment of paddocks to one of the treatments. The cows showed a difference in terms of the percentage of grazing P=0.0072, being higher with the electric fence (55% of the measurement time). From rising-plate-meter estimates of available biomass along the grazing periods, we calculated despite similar forage allowances (electric fence = 48.06 kg DM/cow/d and continuous = 48.21 DM/cow/d) a higher forage intake was obtained in the electric fence treatment (17.5 kg DM/cow/d) compared the continuous stocking (15.7 kg DM/cow/d) (P=0.006). In terms of milk production animals grazing under the differences electrical fence stocking method tended (P=0.0985) to produce more milk (17.39 kg/d) than those grazing in the continuous system (15.16 kg/d) due to the influence of the slope (P=0.05), while for milk quality the protein content was higher for the electric fence (33.7 g/l) than the continuous method (30.5 g/l) (P=0.039). None of the other milk properties differed between methods (P>0.05)

    Death receptor pathways mediate targeted and non-targeted effects of ionizing radiations in breast cancer cells

    Delayed cell death by mitotic catastrophe is a frequent mode of solid tumor cell death after γ-irradiation, a widely used treatment of cancer. Whereas the mechanisms that underlie the early γ-irradiation-induced cell death are well documented, those that drive the delayed cell death are largely unknown. Here we show that the Fas, tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α death receptor pathways mediate the delayed cell death observed after γ-irradiation of breast cancer cells. Early after irradiation, we observe the increased expression of Fas, TRAIL-R and TNF-R that first sensitizes cells to apoptosis. Later, the increased expression of FasL, TRAIL and TNF-α permit the apoptosis engagement linked to mitotic catastrophe. Treatments with TNF-α, TRAIL or anti-Fas antibody, early after radiation exposure, induce apoptosis, whereas the neutralization of the three death receptors pathways impairs the delayed cell death. We also show for the first time that irradiated breast cancer cells excrete soluble forms of the three ligands that can induce the death of sensitive bystander cells. Overall, these results define the molecular basis of the delayed cell death of irradiated cancer cells and identify the death receptors pathways as crucial actors in apoptosis induced by targeted as well as non-targeted effects of ionizing radiation

    Accurate monitoring of the rumination behaviour of cattle using IMU signals from a mobile device

    peer reviewedImproving the monitoring of rumination in cattle could help in assessing of the welfare status and their risk of acidosis. In this work, the monitoring of cattle’s behaviour was performed using the inertial measurement unit (IMU) present in smartphones mounted on the neck of cows. The processing of both time and frequency domains of the IMU signals was capable to detect accurately the main behaviours (grazing, rumination and other) and highlight the characteristics of the rumination process. The algorithm for analysis of rumination was more accurate for grazing cattle than for silage-fed cattle in stables.AgricultureIsLife 1-
