Folded Graphene Nanoribbons with Single and Double Closed Edges
Graphene nanoribbon folds with single and double closed edges are studied
using density functional theory methods. Van der Waals dispersive interactions
are included via semi-empirical pairwise optimized potential. The geometrical
phases of the single and double folded ribbons are obtained. The electronic
structure in terms of energy needed for the folding process, van der Waals
contribution, energy band gaps, and bandstructures are also calculated. The
results are interpreted in terms of peculiarities of the structures and
dispersion interactions. It is shown that significant modifications in the
electronic structure can be achieved as a result of folding.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Experimental analysis of the Strato-rotational Instability in a cylindrical Couette flow
This study is devoted to the experimental analysis of the Strato-rotational
Instability (SRI). This instability affects the classical cylindrical Couette
flow when the fluid is stably stratified in the axial direction. In agreement
with recent theoretical and numerical analyses, we describe for the first time
in detail the destabilization of the stratified flow below the Rayleigh line
(i.e. the stability threshold without stratification). We confirm that the
unstable modes of the SRI are non axisymmetric, oscillatory, and take place as
soon as the azimuthal linear velocity decreases along the radial direction.
This new instability is relevant for accretion disks.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. PRL in press 200
Atomic data from the IRON project - LI. Electron impact excitation of FeIX
We calculate collision strengths and thermally averaged collision strengths for electron excitation between the one hundred and forty energetically lowest levels of Fe8+. The scattering target is more elaborate than in any earlier work and large increases are found in the excitation rates among the levels of the 3s(2)3p(5)3d electron configuration due to resonance series that have not been considered previously. The implications for solar and stellar spectroscopy have been discussed elsewhere (Storey & Zeippen 2001). We correct some errors that were made in generating the figures given in that paper and present corrected versions
