Can I Live: Examining the Self-Worth of Black Men Enrollment in Community College

    Get PDF
T This study aimed to describe Black men’s self-worth and lived experience in community college. According to research, community colleges are the first option for many Black men. Through qualitative research methods, this study examines the believed self-worth of Black men enrolled in community college and matches its findings to Jay Z’s (1998) classic song Can I Live. Findings from this study identify the internal fight Black men have pursuing an education as a means to achieve upward mobility. Lastly, this study provides insight to aid policymakers, higher education practitioners, and Black families to understand better how to address Black men pursuing an associate degree at a community college

Examining the complexity of educational attainment for Black males in an Educational Opportunity Fund program at a community college

The purpose of this research is to describe the lived experience of Black males in an Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program at a community college. According to research, community colleges are the first option for many Black male students who are underprepared academically and come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. This phenomenological study examines the lived experience of Black males in an EOF program because of its ability to provide access, equality, and resources to students. Ten face-to-face interviews were conducted in order to describe the essence of this phenomenon. The findings from this study revealed that there are five themes and three subthemes Black males experience as EOF students at a community college. These five themes are EOF provides a supportive atmosphere, family and peer influence, community college is a stepping stone, being a Black male and a community college student, and fighting to stay focused. In addition, this study provides narrative about Black men seeking to attain an education as a means to achieve upward mobility and to lift their self-confidence. Lastly, this study provides insight to aid policymakers, higher education practitioners, and others connected to Black males to better understand how unique their experience is pursuing an associate degree from a community college

Changes in Agricultural Production and Cash Farm Income in Cache County, Utah, 1909-1949

    Get PDF
During the period 1909-1949 many changes took place in agricultural production and cash farm income in Cache County, Utah, Important factors which caused changes in agricultural production and cash farm income during this period were technological developments in farm power and machinery, plant and animal breeding, changes in consumer demands price changes, and climatic conditions. The influence of these factors on both production and income varied with the enterprise, the commodity, and the year studied

EMS induced mutations in dhurrin metabolism and their impacts on sorghum growth and development

Sorghum is the fifth most important grain crop in the world. It is a staple food, feed, and silage crop in many developing countries in the semi-arid tropics. One factor that can impact sorghum forage quality is dhurrin content. Dhurrin is a cyanogenic glucoside naturally produced in the plant. When tissues containing dhurrin are crushed, hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is released during dhurrin decomposition. HCN is toxic to humans and livestock. While there is natural genetic diversity for the concentration of dhurrin within sorghum lines, there have been no naturally occurring dhurrin-free genotypes identified to date. ^ We have identified ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) mutant sorghum lines that have disruptions in the biosynthetic and catabolic pathways of dhurrin metabolism. The first objective of this research was to determine the causal mutation leading to the acyanogenic phenotype of EMS 2447 and EMS 5085. Using Next-Gen sequencing and SNP marker analysis, we determined that a C493Y mutation in the biosynthetic enzyme CYP79A1 was the cause of the disruption in dhurrin production. Previous studies have shown that sorghum plants with a mutation in this gene had slower seedling growth compared to wild-type plants. Our second objective was to test whether lack of dhurrin production had any negative impacts on sorghum growth and development, as well as stay-green capacity. We designed an experiment to test the effects of the C493Y mutation using mutant and non-mutant plants from segregating F2families. Plots were planted in the summer of 2013. Plants were tested with the Feigl-Anger assay to determine the wild-type or acyanogenic phenotype of the F2s. Throughout the growing season, samples were collected to determine differences in growth, including: chlorophyll content index (CCI), plant height, leaf number, biomass, grain yield, and harvest index. We discovered that the wild-type plants were nearly always slightly ahead of their acyanogenic siblings, and there was generally a 30% reduction in grain yield. ^ A separate study suggested that seedling dhurrin content is a predictor of post-anthesis stay-green capacity. We designed a second experiment to test the stay-green capacity of the C493Y mutant and the wild-type under well-watered and drought-stressed conditions in the greenhouse. Plants of wild-type BTx623 and acyanogenic EMS 5085 (Cyp79A1-2) and EMS 932 (dhr2-1) were planted in separate hills in the same pots. CCI was measured weekly and drought stress was imposed after anthesis. In general, the mutant lines had lower CCI than the wild-type, expecially under drought conditions. We believe this study could expand our knowledge of the function of dhurrin in sorghum and potentially may lead to development of genetic materials that could be used to create forage sorghum lines that eliminate the risk of dhurrin toxicity

The Relationship Of Location To The Effectiveness Of Marriage Enrichment Retreats And Workshops

    Get PDF
The Problem. The proliferation of marriage enrichment programs in the past two decades has generated much public interest. Little controlled research, however, has been done to guide sponsoring community agencies and churches in program effectiveness. It has been assumed that a retreat location, removed from daily routines and stresses, enhances the learning and growth opportunities for a couple who wish to focus on their relationship. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of one marriage enrichment program and to investigate the importance of location as a factor in the effectiveness of marriage enrichment weekends. In addition, the differential responses of men and women were measured as were eight other demographic variables. Procedures. All subjects were drawn from a church population. There were two treatment conditions and one control condition. The retreat condition was composed of three separate retreats, held in secluded locations. The workshop condition was composed of three separate workshops held in local churches. One no-treatment and one placebo group comprised control conditions. All treatment subjects were given the same program. Three sets of leader couples were used to control for leader effects. The Barrett-Lennard Relationship Inventory, which provides five measures of marital satisfaction, was given as a pretest, posttest and delayed test. Data was examined by analyses of covariance of means and by analyses of variance of gains scores. Findings. Analysis of the data shows significant mean gains in marital satisfaction for all participants in the program when compared to control subjects. These gains endured to time of delayed testing four weeks following the program. The hypothesis of significant mean gains for retreat subjects, whem compared to workshop subjects, was not supported. No significant differences were found between the responses of men and women. Significant mean gains were found across all demographic variables. Conclusions. The study supports the effectiveness of this marriage enrichment program when offered to Caucasian, middle class church populations. It does not support retreat locations as an important variable in the effectiveness of the program. The study suggests this program is effective for both men and women
