Resolved Imaging of the HD191089 Debris Disc
Two thirds of the F star members of the 12 Myr old Beta Pictoris Moving Group
(BPMG) show significant excess emission in the mid-infrared, several million
years after the expected dispersal of the protoplanetary disc. Theoretical
models of planet formation suggest that this peak in the mid-infrared emission
could be due to the formation of Pluto-sized bodies in the disc, which ignite
the collisional cascade and enhance the production of small dust. Here we
present resolved mid-infrared imaging of the disc of HD191089 (F5V in the BPMG)
and consider its implications for the state of planet formation in this system.
HD191089 was observed at 18.3 microns using T-ReCS on Gemini South and the
images were compared to models of the disc to constrain the radial distribution
of the dust. The emission observed at 18.3 microns is shown to be significantly
extended beyond the PSF at a position angle of 80 degrees. This is the first
time dust emission has been resolved around HD191089. Modelling indicates that
the emission arises from a dust belt from 28-90 AU, inclined at 35 degrees from
edge on with very little emission from the inner 28AU of the disc, indicating
the presence of an inner cavity. The steep slope of the inner edge is more
consistent with truncation by a planet than with ongoing stirring. A tentative
brightness asymmetry F(W)/F(E)=0.80+/-0.12 (1.8 sigma) between the two sides of
the disc could be evidence for perturbations from a massive body on an

Experimental generation of multi-photon Fock states
We experimentally demonstrate the generation of multi-photon Fock states with
up to three photons in well-defined spatial-temporal modes synchronized with a
classical clock. The states are characterized using quantum optical homodyne
tomography to ensure mode selectivity. The three-photon Fock states are
probabilistically generated by pulsed spontaneous parametric down conversion at
a rate of one per second, enabling complete characterization in 12 hours.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Optimizing the integration of advanced practitioners in a department of surgery: An operational improvement model
Physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) have established themselves as key members of the healthcare team to supplement practicing physicians in patient care. PAs and NPs are collectively referred to as “advanced providers” (APs) and work not only in primary care but in general surgery and surgical subspecialties. Studies have addressed AP integration into the profession of medicine and have examined cost and efficacy of APs, attitudes about APs among residents, and educational impact of APs, but very little literature exists that describes a formalized approach to AP integration into a department of surgery, specifically with AP/resident integration. The purpose of this paper is to describe an initiative for developing an operational improvement model for APs working with residents on surgical inpatient services in a large academic health center. The model consists of four components and each component is described in detail from discovery state towards continuous improvement. Formal professional development opportunities for APs as well as appointing a Clinical Director for Surgical APs have positively impacted AP integration into the department of surgery

Motivation and Long-Term Language Achievement: Understanding Motivation to Persist in Foreign Language Learning
Achieving native-like proficiency in a foreign language is a long-term process; therefore, designing and implementing a plan for long-term language achievement may help more learners achieve their long-term language goals of fluency as well as related career goals. This study presents recommendations that may be incorporated into the college curriculum to help both learners and teachers facilitate the development of motivation to persist in language learning and use at native-like proficiency. The results of this dissertation study provide greater insight into language learning motivation, changes in motivation, and motivational regulation. Data were collected using a questionnaire and an unstructured interview protocol to report the language learning motivation patterns of seven native-English speaking, traditional age undergraduate foreign language learners. Data were collected, coded, and analyzed following an emergent constant comparison method using process modeling procedures to analyze and report quantifiable categories of data, sequences of variables, patterns, and processes as they emerged. Results indicate that changes in the primary source of motivation and motivational orientations occur over time and that internally regulated motivation associated with long-term goals is associated with persistence. A greater understanding of language learning motivation may help teachers and learners develop strategies to regulate motivation in order to facilitate the development of motivation to persist in language learning beyond basic university requirements. This may also operationalize motivation for professional language use at native-like proficiency
