Distribution of the herpetofauna of Kentucky.
Although the herpetofauna of Kentucky is extensive and varied. it has received much less attention than that of most other states. Many herpetologists have reported on various phases of the state\u27s amphibians and reptiles, but for the most part these reports are discrete, either pertaining to a collection, or a generic or specific study. Hence, there is no single adequate work which aptly describes the herpetology of Kentucky as a whole. When one realizes the keystone position of Kentucky in relation to northern and southern forms, the need of a zoogeographical summary of the state becomes even more apparent. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to summarize and correlate the herpetofauna with the natural factors which influence its present distribution in Kentucky. It is the purpose of this work to present not a detailed and complete study but rather a generalized summary of the available collections and published reports in the hope that it may be of value not only as a reference but as a stimulus for further investigation of the zoogeography of the state
Adult respiratory distress syndrome in neutropenic patients
The precise pathophysiologic mechanisms that cause the adult respiratory distress syndrome are unknown. Indirect evidence from human studies and extrapolations from animal models have suggested that phagocytic neutrophils are important in the pathogenesis of this disease. To further evaluate the role of neutrophils, the frequency of neutropenia in 18 bacteremic patients who had the adult respiratory distress syndrome was compared with that in a control group who had bacteremia alone. Three of 18 patients in the group with the adult respiratory distress syndrome were neutropenic as opposed to one of 18 in the control group (p >0.6). Histologic examination of the lungs from two patients with the adult respiratory distress syndrome and neutropenia demonstrated the absence of neutrophils. It is likely that there are many pathways that lead to the adult respiratory distress syndrome. Although neutrophils may be involved in some of these processes, this study demonstrates that neutrophils are not required for the development of the syndrome. In the appropriate clinical setting, the diagnosis of the adult respiratory distress syndrome should not be excluded solely because of neutropenia.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/26450/1/0000538.pd
Thoughts on relatedness, transformation of self, and a new understanding of mourning
I have elaborated Stern’s theory of the formation, growth, and development of the self to explain how the threat of dissolution of self can result instead in adaptive transformation. His theory also led to my insight that mourning is intrinsic to the process of formation, growth, and development of the self, and my observation that the major work of mourning and transformation of self can be accomplished by resilient individuals in six months
