    Funny walking : the rise, fall and rise of the Anglo-American comic eccentric dancer

    This article will attempt to reposition comic eccentric dance as a metamorphic form that still, surprisingly, exists, and is to be found with reasonable ubiquity, in renewed incarna-tions within twenty first century media. Tracing the origins of comic eccentric dance through examples of earlier comedy performance, and drawing from Bergson’s comic theory of body misalliance, this article will dis-cuss this particularly ludic fusion of music and comedy. Further changes to the form affected by modernist preoccupations during the new Jazz Age at the turn of the twentieth century will be suggested. Finally, ways in which the formulation lives on in twenty-first century in-carnations in the comedy work of, for instance, Jimmy Fallon and Ricky Gervase, and in popular television shows such as Strictly Come Dancing (BBC 2004 - ) and Britain’s Got Talent (ITV 2006 - ) will be posited

    Burnout among surgeons before and during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: an international survey

    Background: SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has had many significant impacts within the surgical realm, and surgeons have been obligated to reconsider almost every aspect of daily clinical practice. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study reported in compliance with the CHERRIES guidelines and conducted through an online platform from June 14th to July 15th, 2020. The primary outcome was the burden of burnout during the pandemic indicated by the validated Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure. Results: Nine hundred fifty-four surgeons completed the survey. The median length of practice was 10 years; 78.2% included were male with a median age of 37 years old, 39.5% were consultants, 68.9% were general surgeons, and 55.7% were affiliated with an academic institution. Overall, there was a significant increase in the mean burnout score during the pandemic; longer years of practice and older age were significantly associated with less burnout. There were significant reductions in the median number of outpatient visits, operated cases, on-call hours, emergency visits, and research work, so, 48.2% of respondents felt that the training resources were insufficient. The majority (81.3%) of respondents reported that their hospitals were included in the management of COVID-19, 66.5% felt their roles had been minimized; 41% were asked to assist in non-surgical medical practices, and 37.6% of respondents were included in COVID-19 management. Conclusions: There was a significant burnout among trainees. Almost all aspects of clinical and research activities were affected with a significant reduction in the volume of research, outpatient clinic visits, surgical procedures, on-call hours, and emergency cases hindering the training.     In this article, the performance of a solar-powered multi-purpose supply container used as a service module for first-aid, showering, freezing, refrigeration and water generation purposes in areas of social emergency is analyzed. The average daily energy production of the solar panel is compared to the average daily energy demands of the above-mentioned types of service modules. The comparison refers to five different locations based on the Köppen–Geiger classification of climatic zones with the data for energy demand being taken from another publication. It is shown that in locations up to mid-latitudes, the supply container is not only able to power all types of modules all year round but also to provide up to 15 m3 of desalinated water per day for drinking, domestic use and irrigation purposes. This proves and quantifies the possibility of combining basic supply with efficient transport and self-sufficiency by using suitably equipped shipping containers. Thus, flexible solutions are provided to some of the most challenging problems humans will face in the future, such as natural disasters, water scarcity, starvation and homelessness

    Highlighting a Digital Platform to Assess Young People Needs: Reaching and Engaging Adolescents and Young Adults for Care Continuum in Health Project (REACH)

    Young people (YP), defined as individuals aged between 10 and 24 years, are a vulnerable population. Leveraging digital platforms to reach YP is essential in identifying protective and risk behaviors among this population. The objectives of this study were to (1) examine the user-inclusive development process of a theory-based digital platform to reach YP, (2) describe aspects of the digital application prototype, and (3) provide preliminary findings from the utilization of the app. We present the five-step design process for building the app. The app, known as the REACH-AYA survey, consisted of 98 closed-ended questions with built-in skip-logic algorithms and took approximately 7 min to complete. The survey questions centered on behavioral, lifestyle, and psychosocial factors, which were adopted from different validated instruments, thereby addressing 10 different domains. During the pilot phase, participants utilized the app, critiqued its features, and provided iterative feedback. We used respondent-driven sampling to recruit participants in Nairobi, Kenya, the leading county in high-speed data connectivity. Once recruited, each participant completed the survey and later sent it to their peers until the desired sample size was achieved. The REACH-AYA app prototype was guided and developed by the design thinking approach with an initial pilot sample of 33 YP for pre-testing. The end-user pre-testing assessed for functionality, time, and adaptability. The app was then launched initially through social media, reaching 1101 YP, with approximately eighty percent (n = 887) having completed the survey by the close of the study. The majority of the participants were male (59%), and approximately (69%) of the participants were aged between 15 and 24 years. This is one of the few studies that demonstrate user-centric methodologies of app development and real-life application in identifying protective and risk factors for the wellbeing of YP. Methodologies and lessons learned from this research may benefit other disciplines using digital technology to reach YP or other difficult-to-reach populations
