    Localization due to damage in fiber-reinforced composites

    International audienceFiber pull-out is one of the fracture features of fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites. The onset of this mechanism is predicted by using Continuum Damage Mechanics, and corresponds to a localization of the deformations. Alter deriving two damage models from a uniaxial bundle approach, different configurations are analysed through analytical and numerical (F.E. calculations) methods. For one model some very simple criteria can be derived, whereas for the second one none of these criteria can be derived and the general criterion of localization has to be used

    Lighting Recommendations in Operating Theatres

    “The eyes lead the body.” A good visual environment is important for performance and wellbeing. Unsatisfactory visual conditions often induce a strained posture, more or less unconsciously, in an effort to improve vision. The requirements for the visual environment in an operating theatre are high. Surgeons or assistants who are having visual problems can induce treatment hazards. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the visual environment in operating theatres, and also examine if the surgeon’s visual acuity at near work can be improved with better glasses. Thirty percent of the surgeons had eyestrain, and those with eyestrain had three times as much musculoskeletal strain. The measurements of the illuminance and luminance show a low uniformity level on the operating table; the operating lamps give an average of 100.000 lux, while the surrounding area values are much lower. The most important recommendation for lighting intervention in the operating theatre is a more uniform illuminance on the operating table

    1.6 GHz Low-Power Cross-Correlator System Enabling Geostationary Earth Orbit Aperture Synthesis

    We present a 64-channel cross-correlator system for space-borne synthetic aperture imaging. Two different types of ASICs were developed to fit into this system: An 8-channel comparator ASIC implemented in a 130 nm SiGe BiCMOS process technology performs A/D conversion, while a single 64-channel digital cross-correlator ASIC implemented in a 65 nm CMOS process performs the signal processing. The digital ASIC handles 2016 cross-correlations at up to 3.6 GS/s and has a power dissipation of only 0.13 mW/correlation/GHz at a supply voltage of 1 V. The comparator ASIC can handle sample rates of at least 4.5 GS/s with a power dissipation of 47 mW/channel or 1 GS/s with a power dissipation of 17 mW/channel. The assembled system consists of a single board measuring a mere 136 x 136 mm(2) and weighing only 135 g. The assembled system demonstrates crosstalk of 0.04% between neighboring channels and stability of 800 s. We provide ASIC and system-board measurement results that demonstrate that aperture synthesis can be a viable approach for Earth observation from a geostationary Earth orbit

    Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Cellulose and Dialcohol Cellulose under Dry and Moist Conditions

    The development of wood-based thermoplastic polymers that can replace synthetic plastics is of high environmental importance, and previous studies have indicated that cellulose-rich fiber containing dialcohol cellulose (ring-opened cellulose) is a very promising candidate material. In this study, molecular dynamics simulations, complemented with experiments, were used to investigate how and why the degree of ring opening influences the properties of dialcohol cellulose, and how temperature and presence of water affect the material properties. Mechanical tensile properties, diffusion/mobility-related properties, densities, glass-transition temperatures, potential energies, hydrogen bonds, and free volumes were simulated for amorphous cellulosic materials with 0-100% ring opening, at ambient and high (150 \ub0C) temperatures, with and without water. The simulations showed that the impact of ring openings, with respect to providing molecular mobility, was higher at high temperatures. This was also observed experimentally. Hence, the ring opening had the strongest beneficial effect on “processability” (reduced stiffness and strength) above the glass-transition temperature and in wet conditions. It also had the effect of lowering the glass-transition temperature. The results here showed that molecular dynamics is a valuable tool in the development of wood-based materials with optimal thermoplastic properties

    Human lactobacilli as supplementation of clindamycin to patients with bacterial vaginosis reduce the recurrence rate; a 6-month, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The primary objective of this study was to investigate if supplementary lactobacilli treatment could improve the initial cure rate after vaginal clindamycin therapy, and secondly, if lactobacilli as repeated adjunct treatment during 3 menstrual cycles could lengthen the time to relapse after initial cure.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Women (n = 100) with bacterial vaginosis diagnosed by Amsel criteria were after informed consent offered vaginal clindamycin therapy followed by vaginal gelatine capsules containing either 10<sup>9 </sup>freeze-dried lactobacilli or identical placebo capsules for 10 days during 3 menstrual cycles in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The initial intent to treat (ITT) analysis for the one-month cure rate was 64% in the lactobacilli group and 78% in the placebo group (p > 0.05). However, any patient with missing or unclassified smears at the initial visit who continued the study and whose next smear indicated a cure was included in the cured group; the study also excluded two of the patients in the lactobacilli group who reported that they did not take any vaginal capsules. With consideration to these population changes, the initial cure rate would be 77% in the lactobacilli group. The 76 cured women were followed for 6 menstrual cycles or until relapse within that time span. At the end of the study, 64.9% (24/37) of the lactobacilli treated women were still BV-free compared to 46.2% (18/39) of the placebo treated women. Comparison of the two groups regarding "Time from cure to relapse" was statistically significant (p = 0.027) in favour of the lactobacilli treatment. Adjuvant therapy with lactobacilli contributed significantly to avoidance of relapse with a proportional Hazard Risk ratio (HR) of 0.73 (0.54–0.98) (p < 0.05)</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The study shows that supplementary treatment combining two different strains of probiotic lactobacilli does not improve the efficacy of BV therapy during the first month of treatment, but for women initially cured, adjunct treatment of lactobacilli during 3 menstrual cycles lengthens the time to relapse significantly in that more women remained BV free at the end of the 6-month follow up.</p> <p>Trial registration number</p> <p>ISRCTN62879834</p

    Inward and outward currents of native and cloned K(ATP) channels (Kir6.2/SUR1) share single-channel kinetic properties

    BACKGROUND: The ATP-sensitive K(+) (K(ATP)) channel is found in a variety of tissues extending from the heart and vascular smooth muscles to the endocrine pancreas and brain. Common to all K(ATP) channels is the pore-forming subunit Kir6.x, a member of the family of small inwardly rectifying K(+) channels, and the regulatory subunit sulfonylurea receptor (SURx). In insulin secreting ÎČ-cells in the endocrine part of the pancreas, where the channel is best studied, the K(ATP) channel consists of Kir6.2 and SUR1. Under physiological conditions, the K(ATP) channel current flow is outward at membrane potentials more positive than the K(+) equilibrium potential around −80 mV. However, K(ATP) channel kinetics have been extensively investigated for inward currents and the single-channel kinetic model is based on this type of recording, whereas only a limited amount of work has focused on outward current kinetics. METHODS: We have estimated the kinetic properties of both native and cloned K(ATP) channels under varying ionic gradients and membrane potentials using the patch-clamp technique. RESULTS: Analyses of outward currents in K(ATP) and cloned Kir6.2ΔC26 channels, alone or co-expressed with SUR1, show openings that are not grouped in bursts as seen for inward currents. Burst duration for inward current corresponds well to open time for outward current. CONCLUSIONS: Outward K(ATP) channel currents are not grouped in bursts regardless of membrane potential, and channel open time for outward currents corresponds to burst duration for inward currents

    Deformation independent open brane metrics and generalized theta parameters

    We investigate the consequences of generalizing certain well established properties of the open string metric to the conjectured open membrane and open Dp-brane metrics. By imposing deformation independence on these metrics their functional dependence on the background fields can be determined including the notorious conformal factor. In analogy with the non-commutativity parameter ΘΌΜ\Theta^{\mu\nu} in the string case, we also obtain `generalized' theta parameters which are rank q+1 antisymmetric tensors (polyvectors) for open Dq-branes and rank 3 for the open membrane case. The expressions we obtain for the open membrane quantities are expected to be valid for general background field configurations, while the open D-brane quantities are only valid for one parameter deformations. By reducing the open membrane data to five dimensions, we show that they, modulo a subtlety with implications for the relation between OM-theory and NCYM, correctly generate the open string and open D2-data.Comment: 24 pages, LaTe

    Serological evaluation of possible exposure to Ljungan virus and related parechovirus in autoimmune (type 1) diabetes in children.

    Exposure to Ljungan virus (LV) is implicated in the risk of autoimmune (type 1) diabetes but possible contribution by other parechoviruses is not ruled out. The aim was to compare children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2005-2011 (n = 69) with healthy controls (n = 294), all from the JÀmtland County in Sweden, using an exploratory suspension multiplex immunoassay for IgM and IgG against 26 peptides of LV, human parechoviruses (HPeV), Aichi virus and poliovirus in relation to a radiobinding assay (RBA) for antibodies against LV and InfluenzaA/H1N1pdm09. Islet autoantibodies and HLA-DQ genotypes were also determined. 1) All five LV-peptide antibodies correlated to each other (P < 0.001) in the suspension multiplex IgM- and IgG-antibody assay; 2) The LV-VP1_31-60-IgG correlated with insulin autoantibodies alone (P = 0.007) and in combination with HLA-DQ8 overall (P = 0.022) as well as with HLA-DQ 8/8 and 8/X subjects (P = 0.013); 3) RBA detected LV antibodies correlated with young age at diagnosis (P < 0.001) and with insulin autoantibodies (P < 0.001) especially in young HLA-DQ8 subjects (P = 0.004); 4) LV-peptide-VP1_31-60-IgG correlated to RBA LV antibodies (P = 0.009); 5) HPeV3-peptide-IgM and -IgG showed inter-peptide correlations (P < 0.001) but only HPeV3-VP1_1-30-IgG (P < 0.001) and VP1_95-124-IgG (P = 0.009) were related to RBA LV antibodies without relation to insulin autoantibody positivity (P = 0.072 and P = 0.486, respectively). Both exploratory suspension multiplex IgG to LV-peptide VP1_31-60 and RBA detected LV antibodies correlated with insulin autoantibodies and HLA-DQ8 suggesting possible role in type 1 diabetes. It remains to be determined if cross-reactivity or concomitant exposure to LV and HPeV3 contributes to the seroprevalence. J. Med. Virol. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc
