An Economic Analysis of No-Till Rotations and Effects on Carbon Sequestration and Long Term Sustainability of Agriculture
This study summarizes key economic results from 100 different no-till (NT) crop rotations and a conventional (CT) corn-soybean rotation based on agronomic data from Brookings County, South Dakota for 2001 -2008. A 1200 acre model crop farm was constructed to conduct the farm management budget and simulation analyses. Results indicate: (1) the CT rotation had the highest average net returns, (2) Several four-crop no-till rotations were preferred as producer risk aversion increased, and (3) carbon credit payments would need to be 36 per acre for the top four NT rotations to be as profitable as the CT rotation.No-till crop systems, Stochastic simulation, Carbon Credit Payments, Farm Management, Production Economics, Q12,
South Dakota Agricultural Land Market Trends 1991–2008

South Dakota Farmland Leasing 2003
Nearly 40% of South Dakota agricultural land is operated under a leasing agreement. Presented in this report are recent and longer term trends in land tenure, ownership, and leasing, based on Census of Agriculture data and related materials. Also presented are findings from the 1996 farmland leasing survey completed by 513 South Dakota farm operators: (1) characteristics of rental market participants and of the farmland leasing market, (2) detailed provisions of cash leases and share leases for cropland, and (3) economic evaluation of farmland leasing arrangements. Information from the 1996 survey provides a comprehensive and statistically valid benchmark of agricultural land leasing in South Dakota, with primary emphasis on cropland leasing arrangements. This is the most comprehensive statewide study of South Dakota farmland rental markets since 1986. In many respects this publication updates and extends findings from the 1986 study reported in B 704, Farmland leasing in South Dakota, published by the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (Peterson and Janssen, 1988). This report should be of particular interest to renters and landlords, loan officers, realtors and appraisers, agricultural researchers, and others interested in farmland rental market developments.Agricultural Land, farmland, Cropland, Land Ownership, Land leasing, Land Use, Landownership, Tenancy
Federal farm program payments (1990 – 2001): an analysis of changing dependency and the distribution of farm payments in South Dakota
The growing dependence of the state and local economy and the farm sector on Federal farm program payments is highlighted in this South Dakota case study. The concentration and distribution of farm program payments to recipients at the county, regional and state level from 1996 – 2001 is examined. Reasons for and implications of growing inequality of farm program payments are discussed.Federal farm payments, farm policy, South Dakota
