Regional agriculture surveys using ERTS-1 data
The Center for Remote Sensing Research has conducted studies designed to evaluate the potential application of ERTS data in performing agricultural inventories, and to develop efficient methods of data handling and analysis useful in the operational context for performing large area surveys. This work has resulted in the development of an integrated system utilizing both human and computer analysis of ground, aerial, and space imagery, which has been shown to be very efficient for regional crop acreage inventories. The technique involves: (1) the delineation of ERTS images into relatively homogeneous strata by human interpreters, (2) the point-by-point classification of the area within each strata on the basis of crop type using a human/machine interactive digital image processing system; and (3) a multistage sampling procedure for the collection of supporting aerial and ground data used in the adjustment and verification of the classification results
Optimization by Quantum Annealing: Lessons from hard 3-SAT cases
The Path Integral Monte Carlo simulated Quantum Annealing algorithm is
applied to the optimization of a large hard instance of the Random 3-SAT
Problem (N=10000). The dynamical behavior of the quantum and the classical
annealing are compared, showing important qualitative differences in the way of
exploring the complex energy landscape of the combinatorial optimization
problem. At variance with the results obtained for the Ising spin glass and for
the Traveling Salesman Problem, in the present case the linear-schedule Quantum
Annealing performance is definitely worse than Classical Annealing.
Nevertheless, a quantum cooling protocol based on field-cycling and able to
outperform standard classical simulated annealing over short time scales is

Dynamics of Wetting Fronts in Porous Media
We propose a new phenomenological approach for describing the dynamics of
wetting front propagation in porous media. Unlike traditional models, the
proposed approach is based on dynamic nature of the relation between capillary
pressure and medium saturation. We choose a modified phase-field model of
solidification as a particular case of such dynamic relation. We show that in
the traveling wave regime the results obtained from our approach reproduce
those derived from the standard model of flow in porous media. In more general
case, the proposed approach reveals the dependence of front dynamics upon the

Gender and sexual orientation differences in cognition across adulthood : age is kinder to women than to men regardless of sexual orientation
Despite some evidence of greater age-related deterioration of the brain in males than in females, gender differences in rates of cognitive aging have proved inconsistent. The present study employed web-based methodology to collect data from people aged 20-65 years (109,612 men; 88,509 women). As expected, men outperformed women on tests of mental rotation and line angle judgment, whereas women outperformed men on tests of category fluency and object location memory. Performance on all tests declined with age but significantly more so for men than for women. Heterosexuals of each gender generally outperformed bisexuals and homosexuals on tests where that gender was superior; however, there were no clear interactions between age and sexual orientation for either gender. At least for these particular tests from young adulthood to retirement, age is kinder to women than to men, but treats heterosexuals, bisexuals, and homosexuals just the same
The complications of âhiring a hubbyâ: gender relations and the commoditisation of home maintenance in New Zealand
This paper examines the commoditization of traditionally male domestic tasks through interviews with handymen who own franchises in the company âHire a Hubbyâ in New Zealand and homeowners who have paid for home repair tasks to be done. Discussions of the commoditization of traditionally female tasks in the home have revealed the emotional conflicts of paying others to care as well as the exploitative and degrading conditions that often arise when work takes place behind closed doors. By examining the working conditions and relationships involved when traditionally male tasks are paid for, this paper raises important questions about the valuing of reproductive labour and the production of gendered identities. The paper argues that while working conditions and rates of pay for âhubbiesâ are better than those for people undertaking commoditized forms of traditionally female domestic labour, the negotiation of this work is still complex and implicated in gendered relations and identities. Working on the home was described by interviewees as an expression of care for family and a performance of the ârightâ way to be a âKiwi blokeâ and a father. Paying others to do this labour can imply a failure in a duty of care and in the performance of masculinity
The theory of pulsar winds and nebulae
We review current theoretical ideas on pulsar winds and their surrounding
nebulae. Relativistic MHD models of the wind of the aligned rotator, and of the
striped wind, together with models of magnetic dissipation are discussed. It is
shown that the observational signature of this dissipation is likely to be
point-like, rather than extended, and that pulsed emission may be produced. The
possible pulse shapes and polarisation properties are described. Particle
acceleration at the termination shock of the wind is discussed, and it is
argued that two distinct mechanisms must be operating, with the first-order
Fermi mechanism producing the high-energy electrons (above 1 TeV) and either
magnetic annihilation or resonant absorption of ion cyclotron waves responsible
for the 100 MeV to 1 TeV electrons. Finally, MHD models of the morphology of

Military deployment, masculinity and trauma : reviewing the connections
This article reviews the literature on deployment trauma and examines the limitations
of conventional understandings of trauma as they relate to veteransâ experiences.
It suggests that the failure to take into account social influences and social
relationships limits the usefulness of conventional approaches to trauma. The article
considers the role that masculinity plays in male veteransâ experience of and
sense making about trauma. It is suggested that while formal recognition of posttraumatic
stress disorder in the DSM has provided a helpful language for veterans,
it is an incomplete response. A new model of masculinity that better enables the male
veteran to speak about trauma and to reconnect with others has implications for
counselling practice with veterans
DISTRIBUTION AND PROPERTIES OF CDP-DIGLYCERIDE:INOSITOL TRANSFERASE FROM BRAIN 1
CDP-diglyceride is converted to phosphatidyl inositol by several particulate subcellular fractions of guinea pig brain, with highest specific activity in the microsomal fraction. Optimal conditions with respect to pH, metal ion concentration, and substrate concentrations have been determined. The reaction was stimulated by the addition of bovine serum albumin and by Tween 80. Of several dl-CDP-diglycerides synthesized and used as substrates in a spectrophoto-metric assay for the enzyme, dl-CDP-didecanoin was the most active. The enzyme showed a high selectivity for myo-inositol. Of a number of compounds tested, only scyllo -inosose and epi -inosose served as substrates. Three inositol isomers and three myo -inositol monophosphates inhibited the reaction slightly.
