Influence of X-Rays on some electrical properties of the bovine vitreous humour

    No full text
In this study, the influence of x-rays on the ionic properties of the vitreous humour of the bovine eyes has been investigated. Each vitreous sample studied was divided into three parts with two parts x-irradiated with a skin dose of 4.43 mGy and 140.15 mGy respectively, while the third part served as a non-irradiated control. Measurements of ionic conductivity, pH and bulk electric potential were made on the irradiated and non-irradiated samples at varying temperatures from 5oC to 45oC in order to study their temperature dependence. It was observed that high radiation dose significantly altered the temperature distribution of the ionic content of the vitreous humour. The possible contributions of the observed physico-chemical changes on the structure and charge distribution in the vitreous body have been discussed. OCCUPATIONAL CHOICE OF YOUTHS AND AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN OVO STATE OF NIGERIA

    No full text
The study examined the factors which influence the occupational choice of youths in Oyo State of Nigeria. Information was obtained through the use of structured questionnaire. Results of data analysis indicate that 30% of respondents chose medicine as their career, 22.5% chose engineering as their future occupation, while careers in computer science came third (20%) in the occupational choice of the respondents and agriculture and teaching occupations attracted 6% and 5% respectively. Parents are more influential in assisting the youths with their occupational aspirations. Agricultural occupation is not favoured by a great majority of respondents because of lack of clear understanding as to what are involved in agricultural occupations. The paper provides different ways of educating students about career choice

The study investigated farmers' level of satisfaction with inputs support service. Data were collected on sources of farm inputs, preferred sources of inputs and levels of satisfaction with input services from randomly selected 136 fanners in the five local government areas within Ogbomoso Zone of Oyo State Agricultural Development Programme. Frequencies and percentages, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used in data analysis. Farmers are most satisfied with improved planting materials. However, farmers are not satisfied with fertilizer procurements, agro -chemicals and tractor hiring services in the stale. It has been statistically established that there is no significant difference in the levels of fanners' satisfaction with input support services. It is recommended that government should establish drop points at grass -roots level and reduce cost of farm Inputs and services

Variation in well-head gamma radiation levels at the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company oil field, Ologbo, Edo State, Nigeria

Gamma radiation levels at the well heads in the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company Oil Field located at Ologbo in Edo State of Nigeria have been investigated using a Digilert 50 Radiation Geiger Muller Counter. The sites investigated include one heavy crude oil producing well (A), one light crude producing well (B) and a shut-down gas well. Diurnal measurements were made in the morning and afternoon periods on selected days during the dry and wet seasons between 2002 and 2004. The mean dose rate varies from one well head to the other. It is (17.22 ± 0.36) x 10-12m Sv/hr at the heavy crude well head and much lower (14.30 ± 0.46)x 10-12mSv/hr for the light crude, while the shut down gas well gave (17.26 ± 0.46)x 10-12mSv/hr. It is found that the difference between the morning and afternoon radiation levels is within 68% significance level. The mean exposure rate for the dry season however seems to be consistently lower than that of the wet season. It was generally observed that the level of radiation around the well heads is less than 20x 10-12mSv/hr, which is in agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency\'s standard on ionizing radiation background level.
