    Postoperative Bowel Perforation due to Heterotopic Ossification (Myositis Ossificans Traumatica): A Case Report and Review of the Literature

    Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the ectopic development of normal bone within soft tissue that can occur after traumatic injury. It is uncommon and may be missed or misdiagnosed, which can lead to complications. We report the case of an 84-year-old male with a previous history of a laparotomy who underwent resection of an intra-abdominal tumor through a midline incision. On postoperative day six, the patient was taken to the operating room, as succus was draining from the incision. Upon re-exploration, sharp bone-like material was found in the wound directly adjacent to an enterotomy. Pathology confirmed mature lamellar bone and the diagnosis of HO. This is the first report of postoperative intestinal perforation secondary to HO in a midline wound. We report this case to encourage accurate reporting of HO and its morbidity and complications for the benefit of appropriate surgical planning and epidemiologic tracking of outcomes

    Parsec-scale jet properties of the gamma-ray quasar 3C 286

    The quasar 3C~286 is one of two compact steep spectrum sources detected by the {\it Fermi}/LAT. Here, we investigate the radio properties of the parsec(pc)-scale jet and its (possible) association with the Ī³\gamma-ray emission in 3C~286. The Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) images at various frequencies reveal a one-sided core--jet structure extending to the southwest at a projected distance of āˆ¼\sim1 kpc. The component at the jet base showing an inverted spectrum is identified as the core, with a mean brightness temperature of 2.8Ɨ1092.8\times 10^{9}~K. The jet bends at about 600 pc (in projection) away from the core, from a position angle of āˆ’135āˆ˜-135^\circ to āˆ’115āˆ˜-115^\circ. Based on the available VLBI data, we inferred the proper motion speed of the inner jet as 0.013Ā±0.0110.013 \pm 0.011 mas yrāˆ’1^{-1} (Ī²app=0.6Ā±0.5\beta_{\rm app} = 0.6 \pm 0.5), corresponding to a jet speed of about 0.5ā€‰c0.5\,c at an inclination angle of 48āˆ˜48^\circ between the jet and the line of sight of the observer. The brightness temperature, jet speed and Lorentz factor are much lower than those of Ī³\gamma-ray-emitting blazars, implying that the pc-scale jet in 3C~286 is mildly relativistic. Unlike blazars in which Ī³\gamma-ray emission is in general thought to originate from the beamed innermost jet, the location and mechanism of Ī³\gamma-ray emission in 3C~286 may be different as indicated by the current radio data. Multi-band spectrum fitting may offer a complementary diagnostic clue of the Ī³\gamma-ray production mechanism in this source.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accept for publication in MNRA

    We study the generalized entanglement entropy in the higher dimensional two-sided eternal black hole by double holography. By introducing an end-of-the-world ETW brane, which defines the time-dependent effective Hawking radiation region, we find a new type of Ryu-Takayanagi surface besides the Hartman-Maldacena surface and the island Ryu-Takayanagi surface known previously. We study the phase transition among the three Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces at different temperatures and obtain the phase diagram as well as the Page curve.Comment: Definitions and descriptions were clarified in sections 2.4 and 3.2, modified some diagrams and added more for clarification, added more detailed calculations in section 3.2, corrected some minor typo

    Carbon inequality and economic development across the Belt and Road regions

    Given the aim of maintaining global warming below 2Ā Ā°C, carbon emission reduction has become a global top priority. Since the Belt and Road Initiative has increasing influence on manufacturing-oriented developing countries, more attention should be paid to carbon emission reduction in these regions. This study conducts a comprehensive analysis by analyzing the carbon inequality and regional development and compares the carbon emissions driven by final demand among countries in and outside the Belt and Road area from 1990 to 2015. It is found that the majority of the Belt and Road regions achieved a rapid GDP growth rate with increasing carbon emissions, in which the investment-driven type demonstrated a significant growth. In contrast, the developed countries outside the Belt and Road area maintained their economic growth while decreasing the carbon emissions owed to the declining of investment-driven emissions; however the consumption-driven emissions stably remained a relatively high level. Our results showed that the inequality of carbon emission within Belt and Road regions is lower than the global average, while the inequality of the investment-driven emissions showed an obviously increasing trend. By discussing the carbon inequality and regional development, rational and feasible strategies for countries and regions within and outside the Belt and Road area are essential, and different types of strategies such as low-carbon technologies transfers and overseas financial cooperation are suggested for regional carbon emission reduction and sustainable regional development under the Belt and Road Initiative

    Real time plasma equilibrium reconstruction in a Tokamak

    The problem of equilibrium of a plasma in a Tokamak is a free boundary problemdescribed by the Grad-Shafranov equation in axisymmetric configurations. The right hand side of this equation is a non linear source, which represents the toroidal component of the plasma current density. This paper deals with the real time identification of this non linear source from experimental measurements. The proposed method is based on a fixed point algorithm, a finite element resolution, a reduced basis method and a least-square optimization formulation
