Rayleigh and depinning instabilities of forced liquid ridges on heterogeneous substrates

Depinning of two-dimensional liquid ridges and three-dimensional drops on an inclined substrate is studied within the lubrication approximation. The structures are pinned to wetting heterogeneities arising from variations of the strength of the short-range polar contribution to the disjoining pressure. The case of a periodic array of hydrophobic stripes transverse to the slope is studied in detail using a combination of direct numerical simulation and branch-following techniques. Under appropriate conditions the ridges may either depin and slide downslope as the slope is increased, or first breakup into drops via a transverse instability, prior to depinning. The different transition scenarios are examined together with the stability properties of the different possible states of the system.Comment: Physics synopsis link: http://physics.aps.org/synopsis-for/10.1103/PhysRevE.83.01630

    From antiferromagnetism to superconductivity in Fe 1+y(Te1-x,Sex) (0 < x < 0.20): a neutron powder diffraction analysis

The nuclear and magnetic structure of Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) (0 < x < 0.20) compounds was analyzed between 2 K and 300 K by means of Rietveld refinement of neutron powder diffraction data. Samples with x < 0.075 undergo a tetragonal to monoclinic phase transition at low temperature, whose critical temperature decreases with increasing Se content; this structural transition is strictly coupled to a long range antiferromagnetic ordering at the Fe site. Both the transition to a monoclinic phase and the long range antiferromagnetism are suppressed for 0.10 < x < 0.20. The onset of the structural and of the magnetic transition remains coincident with the increase of Se substitution. The low temperature monoclinic crystal structure has been revised. Superconductivity arises for x > 0.05, therefore a significant region where superconductivity and long range antiferromagnetism coexist is present in the pseudo-binary FeTe - FeSe phase diagram.Comment: 33 pages, 4 tables, 13 figure

Adaptive phase estimation is more accurate than non-adaptive phase estimation for continuous beams of light

We consider the task of estimating the randomly fluctuating phase of a continuous-wave beam of light. Using the theory of quantum parameter estimation, we show that this can be done more accurately when feedback is used (adaptive phase estimation) than by any scheme not involving feedback (non-adaptive phase estimation) in which the beam is measured as it arrives at the detector. Such schemes not involving feedback include all those based on heterodyne detection or instantaneous canonical phase measurements. We also demonstrate that the superior accuracy adaptive phase estimation is present in a regime conducive to observing it experimentally.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, submitted to PR

Macro- and micro-strain in GaN nanowires on Si(111)

We analyze the strain state of GaN nanowire ensembles by x-ray diffraction. The nanowires are grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a Si(111) substrate in a self-organized manner. On a macroscopic scale, the nanowires are found to be free of strain. However, coalescence of the nanowires results in micro-strain with a magnitude from +-0.015% to +-0.03%.This micro-strain contributes to the linewidth observed in low-temperature photoluminescence spectra

Investigating the characteristics of expressed preferences for reducing the impacts of air pollution: A contingent valuation experiment

This paper presents the findings of research intended to investigate the nature of expressed preferences for reducing air pollution impacts. Specifically a contingent valuation (CV) experiment is designed to elicit individuals' values for reducing these impacts and examine how these may change when multiple schemes for reducing differing impacts are valued. Results indicate substantial substitution effects between a scheme delivering improvements to human health and one to reduce impacts upon plant life such that the value of a combined programme, delivering both types of benefit, is substantially less than the sum of values for the two separate schemes implemented in isolation of each other. A practical consequence of these findings is that estimates of the value of combined programmes may not readily be obtained by summing the values of their constituent parts

Structure and giant magnetoresistance of granular Co-Cu nanolayers prepared by cross-beam PLD

    Get PDF
A series of Co_xCu_{100-x} (x = 0, 40...75, 100) layers with thicknesses in-between 13 nm and 55 nm were prepared on silicon substrates using cross-beam pulsed laser deposition. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrical transport measurements revealed a structure consisting of decomposed cobalt and copper grains with grain sizes of about 10 nm. The influence of cobalt content and layer thickness on the grain size is discussed. Electron diffraction (ED) indicates the presence of an intermetallic Co-Cu phase of Cu3Au structure-type. Thermal treatment at temperatures between 525 K and 750 K results in the progressive decomposition of Co and Cu, with an increase of the grain sizes up to about 100 nm. This is tunable by controlling the temperature and duration of the anneal, and is directly observable in WAXRD patterns and TEM images. A careful analysis of grain size and the coherence length of the radiation used allows for an accurate interpretation of the X-ray diffraction patterns, by taking into account coherent and non-coherent scattering. The alloy films show a giant magnetoresistance of 1...2.3 % with the maximum obtained after annealing at around 725 K.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure

Quantum teleportation and entanglement swapping with linear optics logic gates

We report on the usage of a linear optics phase gate for distinguishing all four Bell states simultaneously in a quantum teleportation and entanglement swapping protocol. This is demonstrated by full state tomography of the one and two qubit output states of the two protocols, yielding average state fidelities of about 0.83 and 0.77, respectively. In addition, the performance of the teleportation channel is characterised by quantum process tomography. The non classical properties of the entanglement swapping output states are further confirmed by the violation of a CHSH-type Bell inequality of 2.14 on average.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
