    A new isoquinoline and ceramide from the stem barks of Discoglypremna caloneura (Pax) Prain (Euphorbiaceae) with antiproteinase and cytotoxic activities.

    peer reviewedTwo new compounds, an isoquinoline (1) and caloneuramide (2), a ceramide were isolated from the stem bark of Discoglypremna caloneura together with seven known compounds namely aurantiamide acetate (3), acetylaleuritolic acid (4), 3α-hydroxylaleuritolic acid 2α-p-hydroxybenzoate (5), mixture of stigmasterol (6) and β-sitosterol (7), mixture of 7-oxo-stigmasterol (8) and 7-oxo-β-sitosterol (9). Their structures were determined based on data from literature and spectroscopic methods. Derivatization reactions on the isoquinoline led to two new compounds, the methylated (10) and acetylated (11) derivatives. Some compounds and extracts were evaluated for their cytotoxic and antiproteinase activity. Antiproteinase effect of compounds 1, 10 and 11 exhibited IC(50) values of 10.77, 1.19 and 3.61 μg/mL respectively; significantly low compared to the standard drug, acetyl salicylic acid (IC(50) = 20.28 μg/mL). Ethyl acetate and methanol extract exhibited moderate cytotoxicity activity on Chang liver cells with CC(50) values of 167.90 ± 2.20 and 106.30 ± 2.03 μg/mL compared to the reference drug cucurmin (CC(50) = 11.05 ± 1.04 μg/mL)

    Ebola Virus Disease in Pregnancy: Clinical, Histopathologic, and Immunohistochemical Findings.

    Here we describe clinicopathologic features of Ebola virus disease in pregnancy. One woman infected with Sudan virus in Gulu, Uganda, in 2000 had a stillbirth and survived, and another woman infected with Bundibugyo virus had a live birth with maternal and infant death in Isiro, the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2012. Ebolavirus antigen was seen in the syncytiotrophoblast and placental maternal mononuclear cells by immunohistochemical analysis, and no antigen was seen in fetal placental stromal cells or fetal organs. In the Gulu case, ebolavirus antigen localized to malarial parasite pigment-laden macrophages. These data suggest that trophoblast infection may be a mechanism of transplacental ebolavirus transmission

    Abstract—Asymptotic techniques have been successfully applied to compute electromagnetic wave radiation in various high-frequency engineering domains. Recent approaches based on Gaussian beams for tracking fields may overcome some problems inherent to the ray methods such as caustics. The efficiency of these methods is based on the ability to expand surface fields into a superposition of Gaussian beams. However, some difficulties may arise when the surface is curved. In this paper, we propose a new efficient way to expand fields on a curved surface into Gaussian beams. For this purpose, a new beam formulation called Conformal Gaussian Beam (CGB) is used. The CGBs have been developed to overcome the limitation of the expansion into paraxial Gaussian Beams. The analytical Plane-Wave Spectrum and far-field of a CGB are derived and compared with numerical calculations. A brief parameter analysis of the CGBs is realised. 1

    Perceived negative attitude of others as an early sign of psychosis

    Aim. - Risk of psychosis is defined by the presence of positive psychotic-like symptoms, by subtle self-perceived cognitive and perceptual deficiencies, or by decreased functioning with familial risk of psychosis. We studied the associations of psychiatric outpatients' self-reported functioning and interpersonal relationships with vulnerability to and risk of psychosis. Methods. - A total of 790 young patients attending psychiatric outpatient care completed the PROD screen [Heinimaa M, Salokangas RKR, Ristkari T, Plathin M, Huttunen J, Ilonen T, et al. PROD-screen - a screen for prodromal symptoms of psychosis. Int J Meth Psychiatr Res 2003; 12:92-04.], including questions on functioning, interpersonal relationships and subtle specific (psychotic-like) and non-specific symptoms. Vulnerability to psychosis was assessed employing the patient's written descriptions of specific symptoms. Of the patients vulnerable to psychosis, those at current risk of psychosis were assessed using the Bonn Scale for Assessment of Basic Symptoms [Schultze-Lutter F, Klosterkotter J. Bonn scale for assessment of basic symptoms - prediction list, BSABS-P. Cologne: University of Cologne; 2002] and the Structured Interview for Positive symptoms [Miller TJ, McGlashan TH, Rosen JL, Somjee L, Markovich PJ, Stein K, et al. Prospective diagnosis of the initial prodrome for schizophrenia based on the structured interview for prodromal syndromes: preliminary evidence of interrater reliability and predictive validity. Am J Psychiatry 2002; 159:863-65.]. Results. - In all, 219 patients vulnerable to and 55 patients at current risk of psychosis were identified. Vulnerability to psychosis was associated with all items of functioning and interpersonal relationships. Current risk of psychosis, however, was associated only with the Subjectively reported negative attitude of others. Negative attitude of others was also associated with feelings of reference at both vulnerability and risk levels. Conclusion. - The subjective experience of negative attitude of others towards oneself may be an early indicator of psychotic development. (C) 2009 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserve
