Application of the ONERA model of dynamic stall
A semiempirical model to predict the unsteady loads on an airfoil that is experiencing dynamic stall, is investigated. The mathematical model is described from an engineering point of view, demonstrates the procedure for obtaining various empirical parameters, and compares the loads predicted by the model with those obtained in the experiment. It is found that the procedure is straightforward, and the final calculations are in qualitative agreement with the experimental results. Comparisons between calculations and measurements also indicate that a decrease in accuracy results when the values of both the reduced frequency and the amplitude of oscillation are large. Potential quantitative improvements in the accuracy of the calculations are discussed for accounting of both the hysteresis in the static data and the effects of stall delay in the governing equations
Investigation of tidal displacements of the Earth's surface by laser ranging to GEOS-3
An analysis of laser ranging data from three stations was carried out in an attempt to measure the geometric Earth tide. Two different approaches to the problem were investigated. The dynamic method computes pass to pass apparent movements in stations height relative to short arcs fitted to several passes of data from the same station by the program GEODYNE. The quasi-geometric method reduces the dependence on unmodelled satellite dynamics to a knowledge of only the radial position of the satellite by considering two station simultaneous ranging at the precise time that the satellite passes through the plane defined by two stations and the center of mass of the Earth
Rubidium and lead abundances in giant stars of the globular clusters M 13 and NGC 6752
We present measurements of the neutron-capture elements Rb and Pb in five
giant stars of the globular cluster NGC 6752 and Pb measurements in four giants
of the globular cluster M 13. The abundances were derived by comparing
synthetic spectra with high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra
obtained using HDS on the Subaru telescope and MIKE on the Magellan telescope.
The program stars span the range of the O-Al abundance variation. In NGC 6752,
the mean abundances are [Rb/Fe] = -0.17 +/- 0.06 (sigma = 0.14), [Rb/Zr] =
-0.12 +/- 0.06 (sigma = 0.13), and [Pb/Fe] = -0.17 +/- 0.04 (sigma = 0.08). In
M 13 the mean abundance is [Pb/Fe] = -0.28 +/- 0.03 (sigma = 0.06). Within the
measurement uncertainties, we find no evidence for a star-to-star variation for
either Rb or Pb within these clusters. None of the abundance ratios [Rb/Fe],
[Rb/Zr], or [Pb/Fe] are correlated with the Al abundance. NGC 6752 may have
slightly lower abundances of [Rb/Fe] and [Rb/Zr] compared to the small sample
of field stars at the same metallicity. For M 13 and NGC 6752 the Pb abundances
are in accord with predictions from a Galactic chemical evolution model. If
metal-poor intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch stars did produce the
globular cluster abundance anomalies, then such stars do not synthesize
significant quantities of Rb or Pb. Alternatively, if such stars do synthesize
large amounts of Rb or Pb, then they are not responsible for the abundance
anomalies seen in globular clusters.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap
Non-equilibrium Entanglement and Noise in Coupled Qubits
We study charge entanglement in two Coulomb-coupled double quantum dots in
thermal equilibrium and under stationary non-equilibrium transport conditions.
In the transport regime, the entanglement exhibits a clear switching threshold
and various limits due to suppression of tunneling by Quantum Zeno localisation
or by an interaction induced energy gap. We also calculate quantum noise
spectra and discuss the inter-dot current correlation as an indicator of the
entanglement in transport experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Relating U(N)xU(N) to SU(N)xSU(N) Chern-Simons Membrane theories
By integrating out the U(1)_B gauge field, we show that the U(n)xU(n) ABJM
theory at level k is equivalent to a Z_k identification of the
(SU(n)xSU(n))/Z_n Chern-Simons theory, but only when n and k are coprime. As a
consequence, the k=1 ABJM model for two M2-branes in R^8 can be identified with
the N=8 (SU(2)xSU(2))/Z_2 theory. We also conjecture that the U(2)xU(2) ABJM
model at k=2 is equivalent to the N=8 SU(2)xSU(2)-theory.Comment: 16 pages, Latex; v2: references added; v3: Clarifications adde
The abundance of boron in evolved A- and B-type stars
Boron abundances in A- and B-type stars may be a successful way to track evolutionary effects in these hot stars. The light elements -- Li, Be, and B -- are tracers of exposure to temperatures more moderate than those in which the H-burning CN-cycle operates. Thus, any exposure of surface stellar layers to deeper layers will affect these light element abundances. Li and Be are used in this role in investigations of evolutionary processes in cool stars, but are not observable in hotter stars. An investigation of boron, however, is possible through the B II 1362=C5 resonance line. We have gathered high resolution spectra from the IUE database of A- and B-type stars near 10~M_\odot for which nitrogen abundances have been determined (by Gies & Lambert, 1992, and Venn 1995). The B II 1362=C5 line is blended throughout the temperature range of this program, requiring spectrum syntheses to recover the boron abundances. For no star could we synthesize the 1362=C5 region using the meteoritic/solar boron abundance of log(B) =3D 2.88 (Anders & Grevesse 1989); a lower boron abundance was necessary which may reflect evolutionary effects (e.g., mass loss or mixing near the main-sequence), the natal composition of the star forming regions, or a systematic error in the analyses (e.g., non-LTE effects). Regardless of the initial boron abundance, and despite the possibility of non-LTE effects, it seems clear that boron is severely depleted in some stars. It may be that the nitrogen and boron abundances are anticorrelated, as would be expected from mixing between the H-burning and outer stellar layers. If, as we suspect, a residue of boron is present in the A-type supergiants, we may exclude a scenario in which mixing occurs continuously between the surface and the dee
On Recognizing Transparent Objects in Domestic Environments Using Fusion of Multiple Sensor Modalities
Current object recognition methods fail on object sets that include both
diffuse, reflective and transparent materials, although they are very common in
domestic scenarios. We show that a combination of cues from multiple sensor
modalities, including specular reflectance and unavailable depth information,
allows us to capture a larger subset of household objects by extending a state
of the art object recognition method. This leads to a significant increase in
robustness of recognition over a larger set of commonly used objects.Comment: 12 page
Momentum modes of M5-branes in a 2d space
We study M5 branes by considering the selfdual strings parallel to a plane.
With the internal oscillation frozen, each selfdual string gives a 5d SYM
field. All selfdual strings together give a 6d field with 5 scalars, 3 gauge
degrees of freedom and 8 fermionic degrees of freedom in adjoint representation
of U(N). Selfdual strings with the same orientation have the SYM-type
interaction. For selfdual strings with the different orientations, which could
also be taken as the unparallel momentum modes of the 6d field on that plane or
the (p,q) (r,s) strings on D3 with (p,q)\neq (r,s), the [i,j]+[j,k]\rightarrow
[i,k] relation is not valid, so the coupling cannot be written in terms of the
standard N \times N matrix multiplication. 3-string junction, which is the
bound state of the unparallel [i,j] [j,k] selfdual strings, may play a role
here.Comment: 37 pages, 5 figures, to appear in JHEP; v2: reference adde
