Generalized Background-Field Method
The graphical method discussed previously can be used to create new gauges
not reachable by the path-integral formalism. By this means a new gauge is
designed for more efficient two-loop QCD calculations. It is related to but
simpler than the ordinary background-field gauge, in that even the triple-gluon
vertices for internal lines contain only four terms, not the usual six. This
reduction simplifies the calculation inspite of the necessity to include other
vertices for compensation. Like the ordinary background-field gauge, this
generalized background-field gauge also preserves gauge invariance of the
external particles. As a check of the result and an illustration for the
reduction in labour, an explicit calculation of the two-loop QCD
-function is carried out in this new gauge. It results in a saving of
45% of computation compared to the ordinary background-field gauge.Comment: 17 pages, Latex, 18 figures in Postscrip
ChimpCheck: Property-Based Randomized Test Generation for Interactive Apps
We consider the problem of generating relevant execution traces to test rich
interactive applications. Rich interactive applications, such as apps on mobile
platforms, are complex stateful and often distributed systems where
sufficiently exercising the app with user-interaction (UI) event sequences to
expose defects is both hard and time-consuming. In particular, there is a
fundamental tension between brute-force random UI exercising tools, which are
fully-automated but offer low relevance, and UI test scripts, which are manual
but offer high relevance. In this paper, we consider a middle way---enabling a
seamless fusion of scripted and randomized UI testing. This fusion is
prototyped in a testing tool called ChimpCheck for programming, generating, and
executing property-based randomized test cases for Android apps. Our approach
realizes this fusion by offering a high-level, embedded domain-specific
language for defining custom generators of simulated user-interaction event
sequences. What follows is a combinator library built on industrial strength
frameworks for property-based testing (ScalaCheck) and Android testing (Android
JUnit and Espresso) to implement property-based randomized testing for Android
development. Driven by real, reported issues in open source Android apps, we
show, through case studies, how ChimpCheck enables expressing effective testing
patterns in a compact manner.Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures, Symposium on New ideas, New Paradigms, and

Phase II of the ASCE Benchmark Study on SHM
The task group on structural health monitoring of the Dynamic Committee of ASCE was formed in
1999 at the 12
th
Engineering Mechanics Conference. The task group has designed a number of analytical
studies on a benchmark structure and there are plans to follow these with an experimental program. The
first phase of the analytical studies was completed in 2001. The second phase, initiated in the summer of
2001, was formulated in the light of the experience gained on phase I and focuses on increasing realism in
the simulation of the discrepancies between the actual structure and the mathematical model used in the
analysis. This paper describes the rational that lead the SHM task group to the definition of phase II and
presents the details of the cases that are being considered
Direct measurement of penetration length in ultra-thin and/or mesoscopic superconducting structures
We describe a method for direct measurement of the magnetic penetration
length in thin (10 - 100 nm) superconducting structures having overall
dimensions in the range 1 to 100 micrometers. The method is applicable for
broadband magnetic fields from dc to MHz frequencies.Comment: Accepted by Journal of Applied P:hysics (Jun 2006).5 pages, 5 figure
Schubert Polynomials for the affine Grassmannian of the symplectic group
We study the Schubert calculus of the affine Grassmannian Gr of the
symplectic group. The integral homology and cohomology rings of Gr are
identified with dual Hopf algebras of symmetric functions, defined in terms of
Schur's P and Q-functions. An explicit combinatorial description is obtained
for the Schubert basis of the cohomology of Gr, and this is extended to a
definition of the affine type C Stanley symmetric functions. A homology Pieri
rule is also given for the product of a special Schubert class with an
arbitrary one.Comment: 45 page
LDL receptor-related protein-1 regulates NFκB and microRNA-155 in macrophages to control the inflammatory response
LDL receptor-related protein-1 (LRP1) is an endocytic and cell-signaling receptor. In mice in which LRP1 is deleted in myeloid cells, the response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was greatly exacerbated. LRP1 deletion in macrophages in vitro, under the control of tamoxifen-activated Cre-ER(T) fusion protein, robustly increased expression of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines. In LRP1-expressing macrophages, proinflammatory mediator expression was regulated by LRP1 ligands in a ligand-specific manner. The LRP1 agonists, α2-macroglobulin and tissue-type plasminogen activator, attenuated expression of inflammatory mediators, even in the presence of LPS. The antagonists, receptor-associated protein (RAP) and lactoferrin (LF), and LRP1-specific antibody had the entirely opposite effect, promoting inflammatory mediator expression and mimicking LRP1 deletion. NFκB was rapidly activated in response to RAP and LF and responsible for the initial increase in expression of proinflammatory mediators. RAP and LF also significantly increased expression of microRNA-155 (miR-155) after a lag phase of about 4 h. miR-155 expression reflected, at least in part, activation of secondary cell-signaling pathways downstream of TNFα. Although miR-155 was not involved in the initial induction of cytokine expression in response to LRP1 antagonists, miR-155 was essential for sustaining the proinflammatory response. We conclude that LRP1, NFκB, and miR-155 function as members of a previously unidentified system that has the potential to inhibit or sustain inflammation, depending on the continuum of LRP1 ligands present in the macrophage microenvironment
