New impulse (noncausality) test for descriptor systems by Mobius-transformation
Descriptor systems (DSs) are usually used to model very-large-scale integration (VLSI) circuit systems and multibody dynamics macromodeling. The analysis of DSs, however, is much more complicated than linear time-invariant (LTI) systems due to the poles at infinity. Mȯbius transformation (MT) provides a way to transform poles at infinity to finite poles and largely facilitates the reuse or adaptation of the standard techniques for LTI system to analyze DSs. Nonetheless, MT is well known in the literature and its potential use is currently less appreciated in the analysis of DSs. This paper gives a new way to the impulse (noncausality) test using the properties of the transformed LTI systems by MT. Moreover, the applications to the analysis of controllability, observability and regularity are given. Numerical examples are included to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2012 Chinese Assoc of Automati.published_or_final_versio

Sustainable Growth and Ethics: a Study of Business Ethics in Vietnam Between Business Students and Working Adults
Sustainable growth is not only the ultimate goal of business corporations but also the primary target of local governments as well as regional and global economies. One of the cornerstones of sustainable growth is ethics. An ethical organizational culture provides support to achieve sustainable growth. Ethical leaders and employees have great potential for positive influence on decisions and behaviors that lead to sustainability. Ethical behavior, therefore, is expected of everyone in the modern workplace. As a result, companies devote many resources and training programs to make sure their employees live according to the high ethical standards. This study provides an analysis of Vietnamese business students’ level of ethical maturity based on gender, education, work experience, and ethics training. The results of data from 260 business students compared with 704 working adults in Vietnam demonstrate that students have a significantly higher level of ethical maturity. Furthermore, gender and work experience are significant factors in ethical maturity. While more educated respondents and those who had completed an ethics course did have a higher level of ethical maturity, the results were not statistically significant. Analysis of the results along with suggestions and implications are provided
Gradient echo memory in an ultra-high optical depth cold atomic ensemble
Quantum memories are an integral component of quantum repeaters - devices
that will allow the extension of quantum key distribution to communication
ranges beyond that permissible by passive transmission. A quantum memory for
this application needs to be highly efficient and have coherence times
approaching a millisecond. Here we report on work towards this goal, with the
development of a Rb magneto-optical trap with a peak optical depth of
1000 for the D2 transition using spatial and temporal
dark spots. With this purpose-built cold atomic ensemble to implement the
gradient echo memory (GEM) scheme. Our data shows a memory efficiency of % and coherence times up to 195 s, which is a factor of four greater
than previous GEM experiments implemented in warm vapour cells.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
Knowledge of Antiretroviral Treatment and Associated Factors in HIV-Infected Patients
This study aimed to assess the knowledge of antiretroviral (ARV) treatment and the associated factors in HIV-infected patients in Vietnam. We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study of 350 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients being treated with ARV at outpatient clinics at Soc Trang, Vietnam, from June 2019 to December 2019. Using an interview questionnaire, patients who answered at least eight out of nine questions correctly, including some required questions, were considered to have a general knowledge of ARV treatment. Using multivariate logistic regression to identify factors associated with knowledge of ARV treatment, we found that 62% of HIV-infected patients had a general knowledge of ARV treatment, with a mean score of 8.2 (SD 1.4) out of 9 correct. A higher education level (p < 0.001); working away from home (p = 0.013); getting HIV transmitted by injecting drugs or from mother-to-child contact (p = 0.023); the presence of tension, anxiety, or stress (p = 0.005); self-reminding to take medication (p = 0.024); and a high self-evaluated adherence (p < 0.001) were found to be significantly associated with an adequate knowledge of ARV treatment. In conclusion, education programs for patients, as well as the quality of medical services and support, should be strengthened
An ultra-high optical depth cold atomic ensemble for quantum memories
21st International Conference on Laser Spectroscopy – ICOLS 2013Quantum memories for light lie at the heart of long-distance provably-secure communication. Demand for a functioning quantum memory, with high efficiency and coherence times approaching a millisecond, is therefore at a premium. Here we report on work towards this goal, with the development of a 87Rb magneto-optical trap with a peak optical depth of 1000 for the D2 F = 2 → F' = 3 transition using spatial and temporal dark spots. With this purpose-built cold atomic ensemble we implemented the gradient echo memory (GEM) scheme on the D1 line. Our data shows a memory efficiency of 80 ± 2% and coherence times up to 195 μs.B. M. Modeling dynamic controls on ice streams: a Bayesian statistical approach
This is the published version, also available here: http://dx.doi.org/10.3189/002214308786570917.Our main goal is to exemplify the study of ice-stream dynamics via Bayesian statistical analysis incorporating physical, though imperfectly known, models using data that are both incomplete and noisy. The physical–statistical models we propose account for these uncertainties in a coherent, hierarchical manner. The initial modeling assumption estimates basal shear stress as equal to driving stress, but subsequently includes a random corrector process to account for model error. The resulting stochastic equation is incorporated into a simple model for surface velocities. Use of Bayes' theorem allows us to make inferences on all unknowns given basal elevation, surface elevation and surface velocity. The result is a posterior distribution of possible values that can be summarized in a number of ways. For example, the posterior mean of the stress field indicates average behavior at any location in the field, and the posterior standard deviations describe associated uncertainties. We analyze data from the 'Northeast Greenland Ice Stream' and illustrate how scientific conclusions may be drawn from our Bayesian analysis
Surface and Sub-Surface Composition and Properties of Ion-Bombarded Lithium Alloys
Lithium-bearing alloys such as Si-Li, Al-Li and Cu-Li are of importance in a variety of technological applications, many of them depending on the fact that the surface composition of these alloys differs significantly from that of the bulk, both at thermal equilibrium and under ion bombardment. During ion sputtering, these materials exhibit a variety of phenomena which affect the surface composition and concentration depth profile in a complex manner. We present here experimental measurements of the surface and near-surface composition profiles of sputtered Cu-Li and Al-Li alloys. The experimental results are interpreted in terms of surface loss and radiation-induced segregation processes. Emphasis is placed on the use of these materials for use as plasma-interactive components in magnetic-confinement fusion applications
