    Fast single frame super-resolution using scale-invariant self-similarity

    Example-based super-resolution (SR) attracts great interest due to its wide range of applications. However, these algorithms usually involve patch search in a large database or the input image, which is computationally intensive. In this paper, we propose a scale-invariant self-similarity (SiSS) based super-resolution method. Instead of searching patches, we select the patch according to the SiSS measurement, so that the computational complexity is significantly reduced. Multi-shaped and multi-sized patches are used to collect sufficient patches for high-resolution (HR) image reconstruction and a hybrid weighting method is used to suppress the artifacts. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is 201,800 times faster than several state-of-the-art approaches and can achieve comparable quality.published_or_final_versio

    The Hong Kong Telephone Directory Enquiry System

    Concerns the design and performance of the telephone directory enquiry system that has been newly adopted in Hong Kong. This system maintains three million telephone records and supports over 40,000 enquiries per hour at the peak. In Hong Kong society, the uses of English and Chinese (in particular, Cantonese) has been blending in a thrust of exciting language culture, giving rise to a variety of telephone enquires that traditional B-tree or hashing-based telephone directory enquiry systems fail to handle. The efficiency and flexibility achieved by the new system stem from hosting all indexing data structures in the main memory; these data structures occupy about half a giga-byte and would have been considered too expensive to be placed in main memory in the past.published_or_final_versio

    Intelligent integration of BIPV and load management systems for modern buildings

    This paper outlines the basics of load management, and highlights the possibility of maximising the contribution from the Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) power generation. It will also explain the underlying principles of a dynamic modelling approach and its application in supporting the anticipatory control strategy for load shifting. For many types of building applications, the load profiles are well matched with the BIPV generation profiles such that the BIPV power source is already acting as the peak clipping device. The application of Building Management Systems (BMS) in load shifting should consider the supply from BIPV system. Secondly, due to the thermal mass of the building, there exists time delay in the response of the power requirement of the HVAC system in the building from the solar radiation data. The BIPV system, on the contrary, is responding almost instantaneously to the solar irradiance. A dynamic BIPV model could be applied in aiding the prediction of the load profile.     An optimization model for a battery swapping station in Hong Kong

    In this paper, a battery swapping station (BSS) model is proposed as an economic and convenient way to provide energy for the batteries of the electric vehicles (EVs). This method would overcome some drawbacks to the use of electric vehicles like long charging time and insufficient running distance. On the economic concern of a battery swapping station, the station would optimize the availability of the batteries in stock, and at the same time determine the best strategy for recharging the batteries on hand. By optimizing the charging method of the batteries, an optimization model of BSS with the maximum number of batteries in stock has been developed for the bus terminal at the Hong Kong International Airport. The secondary objective would be to minimize a cost on the batteries due to the use of different charging schemes. The genetic algorithm (GA) has been used to implement the optimization model, and simulation results are shown.published_or_final_versio
