This work is within the scope of studies of the Master’s degree course in Portuguese as a nonnative language offered by Aberta University. It aims to reflect upon directive illocutionary acts, commissive speech acts, expressive speech acts, assertive speech acts and politeness strategies, both positive and negative, deriving from the creation and limitation of a study corpus made of twenty-three oral dialogues produced by seventeen students from A1.2/A1.3 and B1/B2 Portuguese levels in Hamburg, Germany. This research is based on studies in the field of Linguistic Pragmatics. We have analyzed the development of pragmatic skills during the performance of illocutionary acts in interactions which occurred in specific contexts with the ultimate goal of verifying how the speech acts and politeness strategies are produced by the students of Portuguese as a second language. Moreover, we have developed a Sociolinguistic Record with informations regarding the cultural and sociological background of the learners. From the collection and analysis of the obtained results, we found that the majority of students do not show any difficulties in formulations speech acts, mostly indirect ones, and use politeness strategies mainly in invitational acts and expressive acts

Rheological characterization and modeling of thermally unstable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV)

Presently, almost every industry uses conventional plastics. Its production from petroleum and extensive plastic pollution cause environmental problems. More sustainable alternatives to plastics include bioplastics such as poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), which is produced by bacteria and is biodegradable even in seawater. High temperature sensitivity as well as massive thermal degradation cause difficulties during the processing of PHBV. The aim of this work is to create a detailed rheological characterization and master curves to gain deeper knowledge about the material and its processing parameters. The rheological characterization was performed with frequency sweeps in the range of 0.1 rad/s to 628 rad/s and time sweeps over 300 s. Creating master curves at the reference temperature of 180 °C with the software IRIS delivers Carreau and Arrhenius parameters. These parameters allow for a calculation of the master curves for all other temperatures by means of the temperature shift factor. Moreover, the rheological measurements reveal a minimum rheological measurement temperature of 178 °C and a surprisingly high activation energy of 241.8 kJ/mol.Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaf

Massachusetts Special Education Administrators: A Mixed Methods Study of Beliefs, Efficacy and Leadership Related to Students with Emotional Disturbance

There are many concerns related to students with emotional disturbance (ED) as they struggle in both academic and social domains (Little, Lane, Harris, Graham, Story & Sandmel, 2010; Nelson, Benner, Lane & Smith, 2004). There has been a strong emphasis on leadership in recent educational research and with such problems surrounding students with ED, one could turn to the leaders in special education. Research suggests that leadership plays a significant role in student achievement and learning: “Of all the factors that contribute to what students learn at school, present evidence led us to the conclusion that leadership is second in strength only to classroom instruction. Furthermore, effective leadership has the greatest impact in those circumstances (e.g., schools “in trouble”) in which it is the most needed” (Leithwood, Louis, Anderson, & Wahlstrom, 2004, p. 70). With a focus in Massachusetts, this mixed methods study examined the leaders in special education, the special education adminsitrators at the district level. It sought to investigate the beliefs that special education administrators hold related to students with ED and their education. It worked to examine their leadership efficacy in leading for social justice and working with this population of students, their teachers and other leaders. Finally, this study worked towards an in-depth understanding of the contextual factors that may contribute to the administrators’ beliefs and efficacy. In general, special education administrators hold strong beliefs about students with ED and their education as well as a high sense of efficacy to lead for social justice and transformative leadership. Results revealed, however, that the number of years that the administrators have been in the position and the type of school in which they work are both significant factors related to their beliefs and efficacy. Furthermore, three factors were found to be a source of the administrators’ efficacy including personal backgrounds, district policies and school/district culture. Findings from this study may be useful to school districts, administrator preparation programs and policymakers as they work to support special educators in the field as well as students with disabilities
