On quantization of weakly nonlinear lattices. Envelope solitons
A way of quantizing weakly nonlinear lattices is proposed. It is based on
introducing "pseudo-field" operators. In the new formalism quantum envelope
solitons together with phonons are regarded as elementary quasi-particles
making up boson gas. In the classical limit the excitations corresponding to
frequencies above linear cut-off frequency are reduced to conventional envelope
solitons. The approach allows one to identify the quantum soliton which is
localized in space and understand existence of a narrow soliton frequency band.Comment: 5 pages. Phys. Rev. E (to appear
Quantum Lattice Solitons
The number state method is used to study soliton bands for three anharmonic
quantum lattices: i) The discrete nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation, ii) The
Ablowitz-Ladik system, and iii) A fermionic polaron model. Each of these
systems is assumed to have -fold translational symmetry in one spatial
dimension, where is the number of freedoms (lattice points). At the second
quantum level we calculate exact eigenfunctions and energies of pure
quantum states, from which we determine binding energy , effective
mass and maximum group velocity of the soliton bands as
functions of the anharmonicity in the limit . For arbitrary
values of we have asymptotic expressions for , , and
as functions of the anharmonicity in the limits of large and small
anharmonicity. Using these expressions we discuss and describe wave packets of
pure eigenstates that correspond to classical solitons.Comment: 21 pages, 1 figur
Atenolol versus losartan in children and young adults with Marfan's syndrome
BACKGROUND : Aortic-root dissection is the leading cause of death in Marfan's syndrome. Studies suggest that with regard to slowing aortic-root enlargement, losartan may be more effective than beta-blockers, the current standard therapy in most centers.
METHODS : We conducted a randomized trial comparing losartan with atenolol in children and young adults with Marfan's syndrome. The primary outcome was the rate of aortic-root enlargement, expressed as the change in the maximum aortic-root-diameter z score indexed to body-surface area (hereafter, aortic-root z score) over a 3-year period. Secondary outcomes included the rate of change in the absolute diameter of the aortic root; the rate of change in aortic regurgitation; the time to aortic dissection, aortic-root surgery, or death; somatic growth; and the incidence of adverse events.
RESULTS : From January 2007 through February 2011, a total of 21 clinical centers enrolled 608 participants, 6 months to 25 years of age (mean [+/- SD] age, 11.5 +/- 6.5 years in the atenolol group and 11.0 +/- 6.2 years in the losartan group), who had an aorticroot z score greater than 3.0. The baseline-adjusted rate of change (+/- SE) in the aortic-root z score did not differ significantly between the atenolol group and the losartan group (-0.139 +/- 0.013 and -0.107 +/- 0.013 standard-deviation units per year, respectively; P = 0.08). Both slopes were significantly less than zero, indicating a decrease in the degree of aortic-root dilatation relative to body-surface area with either treatment. The 3-year rates of aortic-root surgery, aortic dissection, death, and a composite of these events did not differ significantly between the two treatment groups.
CONCLUSIONS : Among children and young adults with Marfan's syndrome who were randomly assigned to losartan or atenolol, we found no significant difference in the rate of aorticroot dilatation between the two treatment groups over a 3-year period
Determination of nuclear parton distributions
Parametrization of nuclear parton distributions is investigated in the
leading order of alpha_s. The parton distributions are provided at Q^2=1 GeV^2
with a number of parameters, which are determined by a chi^2 analysis of the
data on nuclear structure functions. Quadratic or cubic functional form is
assumed for the initial distributions. Although valence quark distributions in
the medium x region are relatively well determined, the small x distributions
depend slightly on the assumed functional form. It is difficult to determine
the antiquark distributions at medium x and gluon distributions. From the
analysis, we propose parton distributions at Q^2=1 GeV^2 for nuclei from
deuteron to heavy ones with the mass number A~208. They are provided either
analytical expressions or computer subroutines for practical usage. Our studies
should be important for understanding the physics mechanism of the nuclear
modification and also for applications to heavy-ion reactions. This kind of
nuclear parametrization should also affect existing parametrization studies in
the nucleon because "nuclear" data are partially used for obtaining the optimum

Loop effects and non-decoupling property of SUSY QCD in
One-loop SUSY QCD radiative correction to cross section is
calculated in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We found that SUSY QCD
is non-decoupling if the gluino mass and the parameter , or
are at the same order and get large. The non-decoupling contribution can be
enhanced by large and therefore large corrections to the hadronic
production rates at the Tevatron and LHC are expected in the large
limit. The fundamental reason for such non-decoupling behavior is found to be

Global QCD Analysis and the CTEQ Parton Distributions
The CTEQ program for the determination of parton distributions through a
global QCD analysis of data for various hard scattering processes is fully
described. A new set of distributions, CTEQ3, incorporating several new types
of data is reported and compared to the two previous sets of CTEQ
distributions. Comparison with current data is discussed in some detail. The
remaining uncertainties in the parton distributions and methods to further
reduce them are assessed. Comparisons with the results of other global analyses

Charged Higgs production from SUSY particle cascade decays at the LHC
We analyze the cascade decays of the scalar quarks and gluinos of the Minimal
Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, which are abundantly produced
at the Large Hadron Collider, into heavier charginos and neutralinos which then
decay into the lighter ones and charged Higgs particles, and show that they can
have substantial branching fractions. The production rates of these Higgs
bosons can be much larger than those from the direct production mechanisms, in
particular for intermediate values of the parameter , and could
therefore allow for the detection of these particles. We also discuss charged
Higgs boson production from direct two-body top and bottom squark decays as

Hypertension and Smoking Are Associated With Reduced Regional Left Ventricular Function in Asymptomatic Individuals The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis
ObjectivesThis study sought to test the hypothesis that reduced regional left ventricular (LV) function is associated with traditional risk factors including hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and smoking in asymptomatic individuals.BackgroundCoronary artery disease is the main etiology of congestive heart failure in the U.S. and Europe. However, the relationship between risk factors for coronary artery disease and decreased myocardial function has not been studied systematically in asymptomatic individuals.MethodsThe Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) is a cohort study designed to investigate the nature of atherosclerosis in asymptomatic individuals. A total of 1,184 participants (45 to 84 years old) underwent tagged cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. Regional LV function was quantified by analyzing peak systolic circumferential strain (Ecc) in regions corresponding to the left anterior descending (LAD), circumflex (LCX), and right coronary (RCA) territories. The association between risk factors and strains was studied using multiple linear regression.ResultsHigher diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was associated with lower Ecc (p ≤ 0.002). The Ecc’s in the LAD territory of participants with DBP <80, 80 to 84, 85 to 89, and ≥90 mm Hg were −15.6%, −14.8%, −14.2%, and −13.7%, respectively (p < 0.001). Similar results were documented in other territories and after multivariable analysis. Smokers had lower Ecc in the LAD and RCA regions compared with nonsmokers. Furthermore, dose response relationship between cigarette consumption measured in pack-years and regional LV dysfunction by Ecc was noted (p ≤ 0.01 in LAD and RCA territories). Finally, combined diastolic hypertension and smoking was associated with a greater reduction of regional LV function.ConclusionsHigher diastolic blood pressure and smoking are associated with decreased regional LV function in asymptomatic individuals
Dynamical parton distributions of the nucleon and very small-x physics
Utilizing recent DIS measurements (F_{2,L}) and data on dilepton and
high-E_{T} jet production we determine the dynamical parton distributions of
the nucleon generated radiatively from valence-like positive input
distributions at optimally chosen low resolution scales. These are compared
with `standard' distributions generated from positive input distributions at
some fixed and higher resolution scale. It is shown that up to the next to
leading order NLO(\bar{MS}, DIS) of perturbative QCD considered in this paper,
the uncertainties of the dynamical distributions are, as expected, smaller than
those of their standard counterparts. This holds true in particular in the
presently unexplored extremely small-x region relevant for evaluating ultrahigh
energy cross sections in astrophysical applications. It is noted that our new
dynamical distributions are compatible, within the presently determined

Heavy-quark mass dependence in global PDF analyses and 3- and 4-flavour parton distributions
We study the sensitivity of our recent MSTW 2008 NLO and NNLO PDF analyses to
the values of the charm- and bottom-quark masses, and we provide additional
public PDF sets for a wide range of these heavy-quark masses. We quantify the
impact of varying m_c and m_b on the cross sections for W, Z and Higgs
production at the Tevatron and the LHC. We generate 3- and 4-flavour versions
of the (5-flavour) MSTW 2008 PDFs by evolving the input PDFs and alpha_S
determined from fits in the 5-flavour scheme, including the eigenvector PDF
sets necessary for calculation of PDF uncertainties. As an example of their
use, we study the difference in the Z total cross sections at the Tevatron and
LHC in the 4- and 5-flavour schemes. Significant differences are found,
illustrating the need to resum large logarithms in Q^2/m_b^2 by using the
5-flavour scheme. The 4-flavour scheme is still necessary, however, if cuts are
imposed on associated (massive) b-quarks, as is the case for the experimental
measurement of Z b bbar production and similar processes.Comment: 40 pages, 11 figures. Grids can be found at
