    Adaptive gradient-based block compressive sensing with sparsity for noisy images

    This paper develops a novel adaptive gradient-based block compressive sensing (AGbBCS_SP) methodology for noisy image compression and reconstruction. The AGbBCS_SP approach splits an image into blocks by maximizing their sparsity, and reconstructs images by solving a convex optimization problem. In block compressive sensing, the commonly used square block shapes cannot always produce the best results. The main contribution of our paper is to provide an adaptive method for block shape selection, improving noisy image reconstruction performance. The proposed algorithm can adaptively achieve better results by using the sparsity of pixels to adaptively select block shape. Experimental results with different image sets demonstrate that our AGbBCS_SP method is able to achieve better performance, in terms of peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and computational cost, than several classical algorithms

    Attenuation of Cross-Flow Fan Noise Using Porous Stabilizers

    This paper presents a qualitative analysis of controlling the cross-flow fan noise by using porous stabilizers. The stabilizer was originally a folded plate. It is changed into a porous structure which has a plenum chamber and vent holes on the front wall. In order to investigate the influences of using the porous stabilizers, experiments are carried out to measure the cross-flow fan aerodynamic performances and sound radiation. Meanwhile, the internal flow field of the fan is numerically simulated. The results show that the porous stabilizers have not produced considerable effect on the cross-flow fan's performance curve, but the noise radiated from the fan is strongly affected. This indicates the feasibility of controlling the cross-flow fan noise by using the porous stabilizers with selected porosity

    A retrospective clinicopathological study on oral lichen planus and malignant transformation: analysis of 518 cases

    Objective: To investigate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of a relatively large cohort of patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) from eastern China. Study design: A total of 518 patients with histologically confirmed OLP in a long-term follow-up period (6 months- 21.5 years) were retrospectively reviewed in our clinic. Results: Of the 518 patients, 353 females and 165 males were identified. The average age at diagnosis was 46.3 years (range 9-81 years) with the buccal mucosa being the most common site (87.8%). At initial presentation, white lichen and red lichen was seen in 52.3% and 47.7% patients, respectively. Of these, 5 (0.96%) patients previously diagnosed clinically and histopathologically as OLP developed oral cancer. All of them were the females with no a history of smoking or alcohol use. Conclusions: Clinical features of eastern Chinese OLP patients were elucidated. Notably, approximately 1% of OLP developed into cancer, which provides further evidence of potentially malignant nature of OLP

    Clinical Impacts of Delayed Diagnosis of Hirschsprung’s Disease in Newborn Infants

    BackgroundAsian infants are at a higher risk of having Hirschsprung’s disease (HD). Although HD is surgically correctable, serious and even lethal complications such as Hirschsprung’s-associated enterocolitis (HAEC) can still occur. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk factors of HAEC, and the clinical impacts of delayed diagnosis of HD in newborn infants.Patients and methodsBy review of medical charts in a medical center in Taiwan, 51 cases of neonates with HD between 2002 and 2009 were collected. Patients were divided into two groups based on the time of initial diagnosis: Group I, diagnosis made within 1 week after birth, and Group II after 1 week. Clinical features including demographic distribution, presenting features of HD, short-term and long-term complications related to HD were compared between the two groups of patients.ResultsThere were 25 patients in Group I and 19 in Group II. Group II patients had more severe clinical signs and symptoms of HAEC than Group I patients. The incidence of preoperative HAEC was 12% in Group I and 63% in Group II (adjusted odds ratio = 12.81, confidence interval = 2.60–62.97). Patients with preoperative HAEC were more likely to develop adhesive bowel obstruction after operation (33% vs. 3%, p = 0.013) and failure to thrive (33% vs. 3%, p = 0.013). Also, patients with long-segment or total colonic aganglionosis were at risk of developing both postoperative HAEC (85% vs. 29%, p = 0.001) and failure to thrive (39% vs. 3%, p = 0.002).ConclusionIn our study, we found that delayed diagnosis of HD beyond 1 week after birth significantly increases the risk of serious complications in neonatal patients. Patients with long-segment or total colonic aganglionosis have higher risk of postoperative HAEC and failure to thrive. Patients with preoperative HAEC are more likely to have adhesive bowel obstruction and failure to thrive

    Protection Effect of Zhen-Wu-Tang on Adriamycin-Induced Nephrotic Syndrome via Inhibiting Oxidative Lesions and Inflammation Damage

    Zhen-wu-tang (ZWT), a well-known formula in China, is widely used to treat chronic kidney diseases. However, very little information on ZWT’s mechanism of action is currently available. In this study, we investigated the possible protective role and underlying mechanism of ZWT on nephrotic syndrome (NS) induced by Adriamycin (intravenous injection, 6.0 mg/kg) in rats using biochemical and histopathological approaches. ZWT decreased urine protein excretion and the serum levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine significantly in diseased rats. A decrease in plasma levels of total protein and albumin was also recorded in nephropathic rats. Pathological results show an improved pathological state and recovering glomerular structure in ZWT treatment groups. ZWT decreased renal IL-8 level but increased renal IL-4 level. In addition, rats subjected to ZWT exhibited less IgG deposition in glomerulus compared with model group. RT-PCR results showed that ZWT decreased the mRNA expression of NF-κB p65 and increased the mRNA expression of IκB. Furthermore, ZWT reduced the level of MDA and increased SOD activity. These results demonstrated that ZWT ameliorated Adriamycin-induced NS in rats possibly by inhibiting Adriamycin-induced inflammation damage, enhancing body’s antioxidant capacity, thereby protecting glomerulus from injury

    Phase transformation-induced improvement in hardness and high-temperature wear resistance of plasma-sprayed and remelted NiCrBSi/WC coatings

    © 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. The remelting method is introduced to improve the properties of the as-sprayed NiCrBSi coatings. In this work, tungsten carbide (WC) was selected as reinforcement and the as-sprayed and remelted NiCrBSi/WC composite coatings were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, hardness test and tribology test. After spraying, WC particles are evenly distributed in the coating. The remelting process induced the decarburizing reaction of WC, resulting in the formation of dispersed W2 C. The dispersed W2 C particles play an important role in the dispersion strengthening. Meanwhile, the pores and lamellar structures are eliminated in the remelted NiCrBSi/WC composite coating. Due to these two advantages, the hardness and the high-temperature wear resistance of the remelted NiCrBSi/WC composite coating are significantly improved compared with those with an as-sprayed NiCrBSi coating; the as-sprayed NiCrBSi coating, as-sprayed NiCrBSi/WC composite coating and remelted NiCrBSi/WC composite coating have average hardness of 673.82 HV, 785.14 HV, 1061.23 HV, and their friction coefficients are 0.3418, 0.3261, 0.2431, respectively. The wear volume of the remelted NiCrBSi/WC composite coating is only one-third of that of the as-sprayed NiCrBSi coating

    Rapid Increase in the Height and Width of the Upper Chest in Adolescents with Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax

    BackgroundWe determined the chest height in a cohort of patients with primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) who had received chest radiographic examinations prior to the attack. The aim of this study was to determine when their chest height began to change and how this was related to the PSP.MethodsFrom June 2009 to February 2012, the chest posteroanterior radiographs of 156 patients with PSP (Group 1) were reviewed. Among another 3134 patients with PSP, we identified 52 patients who had a chest posteroanterior radiograph prior to the attack (Group 2). We also recruited 196 controls for comparison (Group 3). The chest height and chest width at different levels were measured and analyzed.ResultsBefore 14 years of age, the chest height of patients in Group 2 was no different from that of patients in Group 3. By the age of 14 years, however, the chest height and upper chest width of patients with PSP was significantly higher than that of the normal controls. The difference from normal chest height did not increase at adulthood.ConclusionThe rapid increase in chest height and upper chest width is a unique finding in patients with PSP. It might be attributable to the occurrence of PSP. This finding may also help to identify patients who are at risk of PSP

    An Epidemiological Study of Concomitant Use of Chinese Medicine and Antipsychotics in Schizophrenic Patients: Implication for Herb-Drug Interaction

    Background: Herb-drug interactions are an important issue in drug safety and clinical practice. The aim of this epidemiological study was to characterize associations of clinical outcomes with concomitant herbal and antipsychotic use in patients with schizophrenia. Methods and Findings: In this retrospective, cross-sectional study, 1795 patients with schizophrenia who were randomly selected from 17 psychiatric hospitals in China were interviewed face-to-face using a structured questionnaire. Association analyses were conducted to examine correlates between Chinese medicine (CM) use and demographic, clinical variables, antipsychotic medication mode, and clinical outcomes. The prevalence of concomitant CM and antipsychotic treatment was 36.4% [95% confidence interval (95% CI) 34.2%-38.6%]. Patients using concomitant CM had a significantly greater chance of improved outcomes than non-CM use (61.1% vs. 34.3%, OR = 3.44, 95% CI 2.80-4.24). However, a small but significant number of patients treated concomitantly with CM had a greater risk of developing worse outcomes (7.2% vs. 4.4%, OR = 2.06, 95% CI 2.06-4.83). Significant predictors for concomitant CM treatment-associated outcomes were residence in urban areas, paranoid psychosis, and exceeding 3 months of CM use. Herbal medicine regimens containing Radix Bupleuri, Fructus Gardenia, Fructus Schisandrae, Radix Rehmanniae, Akebia Caulis, and Semen Plantaginis in concomitant use with quetiapine, clozapine, and olanzepine were associated with nearly 60% of the risk of adverse outcomes. Conclusions: Concomitant herbal and antipsychotic treatment could produce either beneficial or adverse clinical effects in schizophrenic population.     Single-Cell Transcriptomics of Proliferative Phase Endometrium: Systems Analysis of Cell–Cell Communication Network Using CellChat

    The endometrium thickness increases by which endometrial angiogenesis occurs in parallel with the rapid growth of endometrium during the proliferative phase, which is orchestrated by complex cell–cell interactions and cytokine networks. However, the intercellular communication has not been fully delineated. In the present work, we studied the cell–cell interactome among cells of human proliferative phase endometrium using single-cell transcriptomics. The transcriptomes of 33,240 primary endometrial cells were profiled at single-cell resolution. CellChat was used to infer the cell–cell interactome by assessing the gene expression of receptor–ligand pairs across cell types. In total, nine cell types and 88 functionally related signaling pathways were found. Among them, growth factors and angiogenic factor signaling pathways, including EGF, FGF, IGF, PDGF, TGFb, VEGF, ANGPT, and ANGPTL that are highly associated with endometrial growth, were further analyzed and verified. The results showed that stromal cells and proliferating stromal cells represented cell–cell interaction hubs with a large number of EGF, PDGF incoming signals, and FGF outgoing signals. Endothelial cells exhibited cell–cell interaction hubs with a plenty of VEGF, TGFb incoming signals, and ANGPT outgoing signals. Unciliated epithelial cells, ciliated epithelial cells, and macrophages exhibited cell–cell interaction hubs with substantial EGF outgoing signals. Ciliated epithelial cells represented cell–cell interaction hubs with a large number of IGF and TGFb incoming signals. Smooth muscle cells represented lots of PDGF incoming signals and ANGPT and ANGPTL outgoing signals. This study deconvoluted complex intercellular communications at the single-cell level and predicted meaningful biological discoveries, which deepened the understanding of communications among endometrial cells
