    The U.S. Army Telemedicine and m-Health Program: Making a Difference at Home and Abroad

    This article highlights the deployment of telemedicine by the U.S. Army through the various echelons of care and in overseas locations, including range and scope of health services provided by telemedicine in a challenging environment.     When facial expressions do and do not signal minds: the role of face inversion, expression dynamism, and emotion type

    Recent research has linked facial expressions to mind perception. Specifically, Bowling and Banissy (2017) found that ambiguous doll-human morphs were judged as more likely to have a mind when smiling. Herein, we investigate three key potential boundary conditions of this “expression-to-mind” effect. First, we demonstrate that face inversion impairs the ability of happy expressions to signal mindful states in static faces; however, inversion does not disrupt this effect for dynamic displays of emotion. Finally, we demonstrate that not all emotions have equivalent effects. Whereas happy faces generate more mind ascription compared to neutral faces, we find that expressions of disgust actually generate less mind ascription than those of happiness

    Visualizing Strain-induced Pseudo magnetic Fields in Graphene through an hBN Magnifying Glass

    The remarkable properties of graphene are inherent to its 2D honeycomb lattice structure. Its low dimensionality, which makes it possible to rearrange the atoms by applying an external force, offers the intriguing prospect of mechanically controlling the electronic properties. In the presence of strain, graphene develops a pseudo-magnetic field (PMF) which reconstructs the band structure into pseudo Landau levels (PLLs). However, a feasible route to realizing, characterizing and controlling PMFs is still lacking. Here we report on a method to generate and characterize PMFs in a graphene membrane supported on nano-pillars. A direct measure of the local strain is achieved by using the magnifying effect of the Moir\'e pattern formed against a hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) substrate under scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We quantify the strain induced PMF through the PLLs spectra observed in scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). This work provides a pathway to strain induced engineering and electro-mechanical graphene based devices.Comment: 23 pages, 10 figure

The Gascoyne Bioregion is a transition zone between tropical and temperate waters and supports a diverse range of commercial invertebrate and scalefish fisheries and provides a large variety of recreational fishing opportunities. This report investigates the stock status of the inshore demersal scalefish “suite” of species for the Gascoyne region. These bottom dwelling fish are primarily taken by line fishing in waters of 20-250 m depth by both the commercial and recreational sectors

    Imaging Self-aligned Moir\'e Crystals and Quasicrystals in Magic-angle Bilayer Graphene on hBN Heterostructures

    Using scanning-tunneling-microscopy and theoretical modeling on heterostructures of twisted bilayer graphene and hexagonal Boron-Nitride, we show that the emergent super-moire structures display a rich landscape of moire-crystals and quasicrystals. We reveal a phase-diagram comprised of commensurate moire-crystals embedded in swaths of moire quasicrystals. The 1:1 commensurate crystal, expected to be a Chern insulator, should only exist at one point on the phase-diagram, implying that it ought to be practically undetectable. Surprisingly we find that the commensurate crystals exist over a much wider than predicted range, providing evidence of an unexpected self-alignment mechanism that is explained using an elastic-network model. The remainder of the phase-diagram, where we observe tunable quasicrystals, affords a new platform for exploring the unique electronic-properties of these rarely found in nature structures.Comment: 37 pages, 18 figure

    Adverse childhood experiences, support, and the perception of ability to work in adults with disability

    Objective To examine the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and support on self-reported work inability of adults reporting disability. Participants Adults (ages 18–64) who participated in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System in 2009 or 2010 and who reported having a disability (n = 13,009). Design and Main Outcome Measures The study used a retrospective cohort design with work inability as the main outcome. ACE categories included abuse (sexual, physical, emotional) and family dysfunction (domestic violence, incarceration, mental illness, substance abuse, divorce). Support included functional (perceived emotional/social support) and structural (living with another adult) support. Logistic regression was used to adjust for potential confounders (age, sex and race) and to evaluate whether there was an independent effect of ACEs on work inability after adding other important predictors (support, education, health) to the model. Results ACEs were highly prevalent with almost 75% of the sample reporting at least one ACE category and over 25% having a high ACE burden (4 or more categories). ACEs were strongly associated with functional support. Participants experiencing a high ACE burden had a higher adjusted odds ratio (OR) [95% confidence interval] of 1.9 [1.5–2.4] of work inability (reference: zero ACEs). Good functional support (adjusted OR 0.52 [0.42–0.63]) and structural support (adjusted OR 0.48 [0.41–0.56]) were protective against work inability. After adding education and health to the model, ACEs no longer appeared to have an independent effect. Structural support remained highly protective, but functional support only appeared to be protective in those with good physical health. Conclusions ACEs are highly prevalent in working-age US adults with a disability, particularly young adults. ACEs are associated with decreased support, lower educational attainment and worse adult health. Health care providers are encouraged to screen for ACEs. Addressing the effects of ACEs on health and support, in addition to education and retraining, may increase ability to work in those with a disability
