What Policies and Practices Can HR Utilize to Promote an Innovation Based Culture and Help Drive Business Outcomes Through It?

    Get PDF
[Excerpt] Innovation has evolved from a mainly scientific activity of research and development to a complex system of interactions among various participants both inside and outside of a firm. In an economy where the innovation cycle is shrinking, characterized by disruptive innovations and changing customer needs, it is crucial for companies to keep up with emerging trends and stay on top of factors that enhance their capacity for innovation. Innovation should not be limited to new products, it can lead to new processes as well. An idea may not work for one department, project, or product, but may be a good solution for another. Innovative firms effectively work across organizational boundaries and connect great ideas with the right people. Despite the importance of innovation, managing and promoting it in a company is not easy, especially when the payoff is often multiple years away. Human Resources, through various policies and practices, can play a vital role in promoting an innovation based culture

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Physics, 2013.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 73-75).Quantum dots in Si/SiGe have long spin decoherence times, due to the low density of nuclear spins and weak coupling between nuclear and electronic spins. Because of this, they are excellent candidates for use as solid state qubits. The initial approach towards creating controllable Si/SiGe quantum dots was to fabricate them in delta doped heterostructures. We provide evidence that the delta doping layer in these heterostructures provides a parallel conduction path, which prevents one from creating controllable quantum dots. Instead, it may be more favorable to supply electrons in the 2DEG through capactive gating, instead of a delta doping layer. We therefore discuss efforts to fabricate Si/SiGe quantum dots from undoped heterostructures and the difficulties encountered. A new method for fabricating ohmics in undoped heterostructures is discussed. We also discuss parallel conduction which occurs in the Si cap layer of these undoped heterostructures, which appears to be a major obstacle towards achieving workable devices in undoped Si/SiGe heterostructures.by Andrew P. UP IN THE BALCONY: WHITE RELIGIOUS LEADERS AND SCHOOL DESEGREGATION IN ARKANSAS, 1954-1960

This paper examines the various responses of progressive white southern clergy to school desegregation events in Arkansas. I investigate why no major white clerical movement emerged to support civil rights, arguing that internal and external factors limited their genuinely motivated witness. National and local clergy endorsed Brown for both religious and practical reasons, arguing that segregation was counter to Christian brotherhood and hurt worldwide evangelism. However, like William Chafeā€™s progressives in Greensboro, too many clergy worked for school desegregation but ignored African American voices, believing that their demands unnecessarily inflamed the local opposition and unfortunately urged patience and civility instead of justice. Furthermore, clerical intervention proved to be less effective than ministers expected. Sympathetic clergy experienced physical harassment and congregational opposition for speaking out, and local communities simply ignore their messages

Defining Classical Tenor Saxophone: performer identity, performance practice and contemporary repertoire

    Get PDF
The tenor saxophone has gained prominence as a classical instrument for composers and performers during the last four decades. Interest in the instrument has inspired the creation of innovative works and tenor saxophonists are charged with preparing these works for performance. Performing new repertoire has impacted the way in which the classical tenor saxophonists explore the musical potential of their instrument and their role in a larger sense. The aim of this study is to identify important works in the contemporary classical tenor saxophone repertoire, establish how performers approach these works, and discover their perceptions of the instrument. Twenty-two professional saxophonists from Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States of America completed a questionnaire in which they identified significant contemporary classical tenor saxophone works and explained why the works were important to the instrumentā€™s modern repertoire. Twelve saxophonists then participated in an interview in which they explored their perceptions of classical tenor saxophone performance, and gave insights into their experiences studying, performing and teaching the most significant repertoire. Three key works written between 1986 and 2011 were identified, all of which utilised the tenor saxophoneā€™s extensive musical and technical capabilities. These works were all written in a contemporary style and featured strong influences from jazz/pop music. Saxophonists regarded the tenor saxophone as a versatile instrument remarkably suited to the classical idiom and unique in the saxophone family. These professionals employed novel technical and musical approaches in their performance of the contemporary tenor saxophone repertoire to create successful and authentic interpretations. They explained their common perceptions of the instrument and shared a collective musical identity as classical tenor saxophonists

Charge Offset Stability in Si Single Electron Devices with Al Gates

We report on the charge offset drift (time stability) in Si single electron devices (SEDs) defined with aluminum (Al) gates. The size of the charge offset drift (0.15 ee) is intermediate between that of Al/AlOx_x/Al tunnel junctions (greater than 1 ee) and Si SEDs defined with Si gates (0.01 ee). This range of values suggests that defects in the AlOx_x are the main cause of the charge offset drift instability
