How could I have the nerve to testify for so long that there is no deity other than Gusti Allah! What if someone asks me: How do you know? Maybe I will only be able to answer with: Because the old people said so! Because my father said so! How could this be believed? How can testimony rely on talk alone? ... I have been asked: How do you know what a chilli tastes like? I replied: Of course I know, because I have tasted that it is sweet! Do you know salt? I replied: Of course I know because I ..

Inferring the Spatial Distribution of Regolith Properties Using Surface Measurable Features

    No full text
The aim of this research is to determine to what extent properties of the regolith may be inferred using only features easily measured from the surface. To address this research question, a set of regolith properties from Weipa, Queensland, Australia, are analysed. The set contains five variables, oxides of Aluminium, Iron, Silica and Titanium, as well as Depth to Ironstone. This last represents the depth of the layer from which the oxides are sampled.¶ The research question is addressed in two ways. First, locations where the properties are related to modern surface hydrology are assessed using spatially explicit analyses. This is done by comparing the results of spatial association statistics using geometric and watershed-based spatial samples. Second, correlations are sought for between the regolith properties and geomorphometric indices of land surface morphology and Landsat Thematic Mapper spectral response. This is done using spatially implicit Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and spatially explicit Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR). The results indicate that the degree to which regolith properties are related to surface measurable features is limited and spatially variable.¶ ... ¶ The implications of these results are significant for anyone intending to generate spatial datasets of regolith properties. If there is a low spatial density of sample data, then the effects of landscape evolution can reduce the utility of any analysis results. Instead, spatially dense, direct measurements of subsurface regolith properties are needed. While these may not be a direct measurement of the property of interest, they may provide useful additional information by which these may be inferred

A New Way of Measuring Openness: The Open Governance Index

Open source software is now "business as usual" in the mobile industry. While much attention is given to the importance of open source licenses, we argue in this article that the governance model can be as necessary to a project’s success and that projects vary widely in the governance models – whether open or closed – that they employ. Open source governance models describe the control points that are used to influence open source projects with regard to access to the source code, how the source code is developed, how derivatives are created, and the community structure of the project. Governance determines who has control over the project beyond what is deemed legally necessary via the open source licenses for that project. The purpose of our research is to define and measure the governance of open source projects, in other words, the extent to which decision-making in an open source project is "open" or "closed". We analyzed eight open source projects using 13 specific governance criteria across four areas of governance: access, development, derivatives and community. Our findings suggest that the most open platforms will be most successful in the long term, however we acknowledge exceptions to this rule. We also identify best practices that are common across these open source projects with regard to source code access, development of source code, management of derivatives, and community structure. These best practices increase the likelihood of developer use of and involvement in open source projects

Advice for Boris Johnson: don’t take the EU on in lawfare

The UK government has admitted it intends to break international law, thereby adopting a ‘mad man’ rollercoaster strategy for the end phase of the Brexit negotiations. However, Brigid Laffan‘s advice for Boris Johnson is: don’t take the EU on in Lawfare

Context counts: an exploration of the situational correlates of meat consumption in three Western European countries

    Get PDF
A reduction in the demand for meat and particularly red meat has the potential to significantly enhance the sustainability and health of many people's diets. In the current work, I examine situational predictors of meat consumption in nationally representative nutrition surveys from three Western European countries: Switzerland, France and the Netherlands. More specifically, I examine whether the situational factors – the meal type, the day of the week and the location of the food consumption occasion – are predictive of whether meat and red meat are consumed. The results indicate that all three factors are linked to meat and red meat consumption with the patterns varying substantially across the different case study countries and in some cases also the gender of the consumer. The results emphasise the value of mapping situational correlates to inform situated interventions aimed at influencing meat consumption, while also highlighting important differences across both cultures and people

Being and Becoming: Narratives of Chinese international master’s students in UK higher education

    Get PDF
This thesis is a study of Chinese international master’s students undertaking a master’s degree at a UK higher education institution. This study explores Chinese international master’s students’ perceptions of their experience of an academic sojourn and how these perceptions can inform the professional services of the Student Experience Division. These perceptions are viewed through the lens of Bildung. Bildung as an educational concept looks at the transformative educational experience in a holistic manner to comprise the lived experience, these experiences, both academic and social, are termed educative practices. Through the concept of Bildung, I formulate a theoretical perspective of ‘being and becoming’ for the Chinese international student addressing the self, motivation as an investment and emancipation and freedom through educative practices. This study is set in the internationalisation of student experience with a specific focus on professional services in higher education institutions. The participants' narratives focus on the student experience, addressing their studies and experiences of living and studying abroad. The participants reveal perceptions of the self that transform through this experience and are examples of ‘being and becoming’. This research was undertaken as a narrative study; qualitative semi-structured interviews were used to collect the narratives of five Chinese students studying at a UK higher education institution for their master's degree. The interviews were analysed using narrative analysis, and a narrative for each participant was co-constructed. This doctoral thesis aims to provide insights and develop a theoretical perspective in the field of internationalisation of student experience and apply this perspective to inform the development of professional services in the Student Experience Division
