    Empirical economics and econometrics (EEE) research now relies primarily on the application of code to datasets. Handling the workflow linking datasets, programs, results and finally manuscript(s) is essential if one wish to reproduce results, which is now increasingly required by journals and institutions. We underline here the importance of “reproducible research” in EEE and suggest three simple principles to follow. We illustrate these principles with good habits and tools, with particular focus on their implementation in most popular software and languages in applied economics

    ALK germline mutations in patients with neuroblastoma: a rare and weakly penetrant syndrome

    Neuroblastic tumours may occur in a predisposition context. Two main genes are involved: PHOX2B, observed in familial cases and frequently associated with other neurocristopathies (Ondine's and Hirschsprung's disease); and ALK, mostly in familial tumours. We have assessed the frequency of mutations of these two genes in patients with a presumable higher risk of predisposition. We sequenced both genes in 26 perinatal cases (prebirth and o1 month of age, among which 10 were multifocal), 16 multifocal postnatal (41 month) cases, 3 pairs of affected relatives and 8 patients with multiple malignancies. The whole coding sequences of the two genes were analysed in tumour and/or constitutional DNAs. We found three ALK germline mutations, all in a context of multifocal tumours. Two mutations (T1151R and R1192P) were inherited and shared by several unaffected patients, thus illustrating an incomplete penetrance. Younger age at tumour onset did not seem to offer a relevant selection criterion for ALK analyses. Conversely, multifocal tumours might be the most to benefit from the genetic screening. Finally, no PHOX2B germline mutation was found in this series. In conclusion, ALK deleterious mutations are rare events in patients with a high probability of predisposition. Other predisposing genes remain to be discovered

    Blood flow modeling in peripheral arterial bypasses : from theory to clinical practice

    Peripheral arterial bypass surgery is affected by a significant occlusion rate at mid-term. The bypass patency depends on its hemodynamics and this later is influenced by the bypass distal anastomosis site (distal arterial network) and the bypass conduit type (venous or prosthetic). We have developed and validated a mathematical model that predicts blood flow in a bypass, depending on the patient-specific arterial network and the bypass conduit characteristics. The pressure wave propagation in peripheral diseased arterial networks and the influence of a revascularization procedure have been described. The arterial networks have been defined by their resistance and compliance characteristics. Arterial segments and bypass conduits have been described by their elasticity.     Quality of life, pain, and functional respiratory recovery after lobectomy for early stage non-small cell lung cancer: a review of the literature comparing minimal invasive and open procedures

    The recent improvement in surgical techniques for non-small cell lung cancer enables evident better results in term of postoperative recovery with lower adverse events. Even though the interest in minimally invasive procedures has increased, more subjective advantages are not always so apparent in the literature. There is indeed a growing interest in the daily life of patients including their management of physical and emotional pain, the perception of quality of life, and pulmonary function recovery. This review aims to highlight the advantages of minimal invasive surgery on pain, quality of life, and functional pulmonary recovery after lobectomy alone for early stage non-small cell lung cancer. Minimal invasive techniques or limited sparing open techniques offer better results in term of postoperative pain than open non-sparing techniques, allowing a lighter analgesia protocol. However, these clear benefits seem to disappear in the mid-term postoperative period. Studies suggest that minimal invasive surgery is non-inferior to thoracotomy in terms of quality of life, and seems to give patients at least a better vision of their health, but larger-scale studies are needed to demonstrate its superiority. Data show clear advantages in the postoperative pulmonary function recovery for minimal invasive surgery compared to that of open procedures, although sparing and anterior incisions can show equivalence. That benefit does not seem to persist in the mid and long term. Nevertheless, the posterolateral thoracotomy appears to have the worse effect on the loss of pulmonary function

Trois perspectives – enjeux, institutions, pollutions – servent de fil conducteur à une étude pluridisciplinaire articulant analyses politiques et données empiriques. L’article permet de suivre les modifications intervenues dans ces différents registres, et de mettre en évidence une série de constantes qui transcendent les périodes.     Validation of a 1D patient-specific model of the arterial hemodynamics in bypassed lower-limbs: Simulations against in vivo measurements

    The validation of a coupled 1D–0D model of the lower-limb arterial hemodynamics is presented. This study focuses on pathological subjects (6 patients, 72.7 ± 11.1 years) suffering from atherosclerosis who underwent a femoro-popliteal bypass surgery. The 1D model comprises four vessels from the upper-leg, peripheral networks are modeled with three-element windkessels and in vivo velocity is prescribed at the inlet. The model is patient-specific: its parameters reflect the physiological condition of the subjects. In vivo data are acquired invasively during bypass surgery using B-mode ultrasonography and catheter. Simulations from the model compare well with measured velocity (u) and pressure (p) waveforms: average relative root-mean-square error between numerical and experimental waveforms are limited to Ep = 9.6%, Eu = 16.0%. The model is able to reproduce the intensity and shape of waveforms observed in different clinical cases. This work also details the introduction of blood leakages along the pathological arterial network, and the sensitivity of the model to its parameters. This study constitutes a first validation of a patient-specific numerical model of a pathological arterial network. It presents an efficient tool for engineers and clinicians to help them improve their understand- ing of the hemodynamics in diseased arteries
