    Debatable land: an essay on the relationship between English and Scottish criminal law

    This article proposes that a better understanding of the identity of Scots criminal law can be developed through an analysis of the similarities between English and Scots law rather than by concentrating on the differences. It argues that historically there are striking similarities between the two laws which have been overlooked or ignoredfor various reasons. It goes on to argue that many ofthe current differences between the two laws can be explained in terms of contemporary academic and institutional conditions, and that these offer a betterfoundation on which to construct a principled theoretical understanding of Scots criminal law

    A new method for the experimental study of topological effects in the quark-gluon plasma

    A new method is presented for the quantitative measurement of charge separation about the reaction plane. A correlation function is obtained whose shape is concave when there is a net separation of positive and negative charges. Correlations not specifically associated with charge, from flow, jets and momentum conservation, do not influence the shape or magnitude of the correlation function. Detailed simulations are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method for the quantitative measurement of charge separation. Such measurements are a pre-requisite to the investigation of topological charge effects in the QGP as derived from the "strong CP\cal{CP} problem".Comment: Six pages 13 figures.     Investigations on Deposit Formation in the Holes of Diesel Injector Nozzles

    Current developments in fuels and emissions regulations are resulting in an increasingly severe operating environment for diesel fuel injection systems. The formation of deposits within the holes or on the outside of the injector nozzle can affect the overall system performance. The rate of deposit formation is affected by a number of parameters, including operating conditions and fuel composition. For the work reported here an accelerated test procedure was developed to evaluate the relative importance of some of these parameters in a high pressure common rail fuel injection system. The resulting methodology produced measurable deposits in a custom made injector nozzle on a single cylinder engine. The results indicate that fuels containing 30%v/v and 100% Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME), that does not meet EN 14214 produced more deposit than an EN590 petroleum diesel fuel. Overall, the addition of zinc to the fuel had the biggest effect on deposit formation and resulted in a 12.2% decrease in Indicated Mean Effective Pressure (IMEP). The effects of zinc were unexpectedly reduced when it was added to fuel containing 30%v/v biodiesel. Reducing the common-rail pressure with 30%v/v biodiesel (no added zinc) increased the loss in IMEP. Raising the air and fuel temperatures by 40°C and 30°C respectively showed no bigger loss in IMEP.     Constraints on models for the initial collision geometry in ultra relativistic heavy ion collisions

    Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are used to compute the centrality dependence of the collision zone eccentricities (ϵ2,4\epsilon_{2,4}), for both spherical and deformed ground state nuclei, for different model scenarios. Sizable model dependent differences are observed. They indicate that measurements of the 2nd2^{\text{nd}} and 4th4^{\text{th}} order Fourier flow coefficients v2,4v_{2,4}, expressed as the ratio v4(v2)2\frac{v_4}{(v_2)^2}, can provide robust constraints for distinguishing between different theoretical models for the initial-state eccentricity. Such constraints could remove one of the largest impediments to a more precise determination of the specific viscosity from precision v2,4v_{2,4} measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC).Comment: 4 pages, 3 figs - version accepted for publicatio

    Human Papillomavirus: The Influence of Prevention and Vaccination

    Human Papillomavirus infections (HPV) are the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the United States. Of cancers in parts of the body where HPV is often discovered about 80% originated from an HPV infection. Despite this knowledge and the effectiveness of the HPV vaccine, vaccination by both genders in Kentucky and on a national scale remains highly underutilized. As a result, preventable incidence and mortality rates from HPV-related illness are elevated. Health care delivery factors such as increased vaccination and preventative care, insurance coverage, and accessible rural health care are necessary for HPV prevention and promotion of holistic health. The importance of advocacy for policies supporting the vaccine, sexual health, and education about HPV and the vaccine is fundamental to reducing HPV-related cancer rates nationwide. Since the vaccine was approved in 2006, education in forms of parental endorsement, healthcare provider recommendation, peer support, and video intervention have proven effective. As time passes and the vaccine is increasingly utilized, there will be an opportunity for research to identify methods of education for specific populations
