Antioxidant activity of phenolic acids and esters present in red wine on human Low-Density Lipoproteins

To evaluate the antioxidant activity of different phenolic acids and their esters, three types of experiments have been used. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) quantitative analysis was carried out using the acetaldehyde/xanthine oxidase system and Fenton's reaction to generate superoxide and hydroxyl radicals, respectively. In a second test, hydroperoxides generated by Cu2+-catalysed oxidation of low density lipoproteins (LDL) were quantified by a modified iodometric method. In a third assay, LDL were oxidized with Esterbauer's method and modified LDL species were quantified by HPLC. The results show that the esterified phenolic derivatives present a better antioxidant activity, on the lipoperoxidation of LDL, than the corresponding phenolic acids

Ration planning tool, user manual and webinar: Poultry and swine

Feed production software already exists, but does not adequately meet the needs of organic animal producers. The calculation software improves the feed database to meet the needs of organic farmers. The tools objective is to help farmers achieve a 100% organic diet for monogastric animals by improving the feed database programme. This aligns with the feed objectives for the coming years, the goals of farm autonomy. The tool allows the user to compose rations for pig and poultry farming based on two entries: 1. Production objectives (Types of animals, age, slaughter weight, laying potential...) and, 2. Usable organic feedstuffs. The user manual and video help farmers properly use the tool

Novel donors of nitric oxide derived of S-nitrosocysteine possessing antioxidant activities

Novel S-nitrosothiols possessing a phenolic function were investigated as nitric oxide (NO) donors. A study of NO release from these derivatives was carried out by electron spin resonance (ESR). All compounds gave rise to a characteristic three-line ESR signal in the presence of the complex [Fe(II)(MGD)2], revealing the formation of the complex [Fe(II)(MGD)2(NO)]. Furthermore, tests based on cytochrome c reduction were performed in order to study the ability of each phenolic disulfide, the final organic decomposition product of S-nitrosothiols, to trap superoxide radical anion (O2-). This study revealed a high reactivity of 1b and 3b towards O2-. For these two compounds, the respective inhibitory concentration (IC) 50 values were 92 µM and 43 µM
