Magnetic structure of the antiferromagnetic half-Heusler compound NdBiPt
We present results of single crystal neutron diffraction experiments on the
rare-earth, half-Heusler antiferromagnet (AFM) NdBiPt. This compound exhibits
an AFM phase transition at ~K with an ordered moment of
~ per Nd atom. The magnetic moments are aligned along
the -direction, arranged in a type-I AFM structure with ferromagnetic
planes, alternating antiferromagnetically along a propagation vector of
. The BiPt (= Ce-Lu) family of materials has been proposed as
candidates of a new family of antiferromagnetic topological insulators (AFTI)
with magnetic space group that corresponds to a type-II AFM structure where
ferromagnetic sheets are stacked along the space diagonal. The resolved
structure makes it unlikely, that NdBiPt qualifies as an AFTI.Comment: As resubmitted to PRB, corrected typos and changed symbols in Fig.
Tuning the exciton g-factor in single InAs/InP quantum dots
Photoluminescence data from single, self-assembled InAs/InP quantum dots in
magnetic fields up to 7 T are presented. Exciton g-factors are obtained for
dots of varying height, corresponding to ground state emission energies ranging
from 780 meV to 1100 meV. A monotonic increase of the g-factor from -2 to +1.2
is observed as the dot height decreases. The trend is well reproduced by sp3
tight binding calculations, which show that the hole g-factor is sensitive to
confinement effects through orbital angular momentum mixing between the
light-hole and heavy-hole valence bands. We demonstrate tunability of the
exciton g-factor by manipulating the quantum dot dimensions using pyramidal InP
nanotemplates
Common Algebraic Structure for the Calogero-Sutherland Models
We investigate common algebraic structure for the rational and trigonometric
Calogero-Sutherland models by using the exchange-operator formalism. We show
that the set of the Jack polynomials whose arguments are Dunkl-type operators

Nutrient Content and Stoichiometry of Pelagic \u3ci\u3eSargassum\u3c/i\u3e Reflects Increasing Nitrogen Availability In the Atlantic Basin
The pelagic brown macroalgae Sargassum spp. have grown for centuries in oligotrophic waters of the North Atlantic Ocean supported by natural nutrient sources, such as excretions from associated fishes and invertebrates, upwelling, and N2 fixation. Using a unique historical baseline, we show that since the 1980s the tissue %N of Sargassum spp. has increased by 35%, while %P has decreased by 44%, resulting in a 111% increase in the N:P ratio (13:1 to 28:1) and increased P limitation. The highest %N and δ15N values occurred in coastal waters influenced by N-rich terrestrial runoff, while lower C:N and C:P ratios occurred in winter and spring during peak river discharges. These findings suggest that increased N availability is supporting blooms of Sargassum and turning a critical nursery habitat into harmful algal blooms with catastrophic impacts on coastal ecosystems, economies, and human health
Recent Advances in Nuclear Powered Electric Propulsion for Space Exploration
Nuclear and radioisotope powered electric thrusters are being developed as primary in-space propulsion systems for potential future robotic and piloted space missions. Possible applications for high power nuclear electric propulsion include orbit raising and maneuvering of large space platforms, lunar and Mars cargo transport, asteroid rendezvous and sample return, and robotic and piloted planetary missions, while lower power radioisotope electric propulsion could significantly enhance or enable some future robotic deep space science missions. This paper provides an overview of recent U.S. high power electric thruster research programs, describing the operating principles, challenges, and status of each technology. Mission analysis is presented that compares the benefits and performance of each thruster type for high priority NASA missions. The status of space nuclear power systems for high power electric propulsion is presented. The paper concludes with a discussion of power and thruster development strategies for future radioisotope electric propulsion systems
Pathogenic forms of tau inhibit kinesin-dependent axonal transport through a mechanism involving activation of axonal phosphotransferases

The definitive version was published in Journal of Neuroscience 31 (2011): 9858-9868, doi:10.1523/JNEUROSCI.0560-11.2011.Aggregated filamentous forms of hyperphosphorylated tau (a microtubule-associated protein) represent pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other tauopathies. While axonal transport dysfunction is thought to represent a primary pathogenic factor in AD and other neurodegenerative diseases, the direct molecular link between pathogenic forms of tau and deficits in axonal transport remain unclear. Recently, we demonstrated that filamentous, but not soluble, forms of wild-type tau inhibit anterograde, kinesin-based fast axonal transport (FAT) by activating axonal protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) and glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3), independent of microtubule binding. Here, we demonstrate that amino acids 2–18 of tau, comprising a phosphatase-activating domain (PAD), are necessary and sufficient for activation of this pathway in axoplasms isolated from squid giant axons. Various pathogenic forms of tau displaying increased exposure of PAD inhibited anterograde FAT in squid axoplasm. Importantly, immunohistochemical studies using a novel PAD-specific monoclonal antibody in human postmortem tissue indicated that increased PAD exposure represents an early pathogenic event in AD that closely associates in time with AT8 immunoreactivity, an early marker of pathological tau. We propose a model of pathogenesis in which disease-associated changes in tau conformation lead to increased exposure of PAD, activation of PP1-GSK3, and inhibition of FAT. Results from these studies reveal a novel role for tau in modulating axonal phosphotransferases and provide a molecular basis for a toxic gain-of-function associated with pathogenic forms of tau.This work was supported by NIH Grants T32 AG020506-07 (N.M.K.); AG09466 (L.I.B.); and NS23868, NS23320,

Quantum Calogero-Moser Models: Integrability for all Root Systems
The issues related to the integrability of quantum Calogero-Moser models
based on any root systems are addressed. For the models with degenerate
potentials, i.e. the rational with/without the harmonic confining force, the
hyperbolic and the trigonometric, we demonstrate the following for all the root
systems: (i) Construction of a complete set of quantum conserved quantities in
terms of a total sum of the Lax matrix (L), i.e. (\sum_{\mu,\nu\in{\cal
R}}(L^n)_{\mu\nu}), in which ({\cal R}) is a representation space of the
Coxeter group. (ii) Proof of Liouville integrability. (iii) Triangularity of
the quantum Hamiltonian and the entire discrete spectrum. Generalised Jack
polynomials are defined for all root systems as unique eigenfunctions of the
Hamiltonian. (iv) Equivalence of the Lax operator and the Dunkl operator. (v)
Algebraic construction of all excited states in terms of creation operators.
These are mainly generalisations of the results known for the models based on
the (A) series, i.e. (su(N)) type, root systems.Comment: 45 pages, LaTeX2e, no figure
New Algebraic Quantum Many-body Problems
We develop a systematic procedure for constructing quantum many-body problems
whose spectrum can be partially or totally computed by purely algebraic means.
The exactly-solvable models include rational and hyperbolic potentials related
to root systems, in some cases with an additional external field. The
quasi-exactly solvable models can be considered as deformations of the previous
