The increase of urbanization in Brazil near native forest areas has led to great risk factors for most birds, especially when it comes to building the nest. Most birds that live in big cities use different materials such as wires, plastic pieces, but mostly construction materials that are available near their nesting areas, which may lead to offspring damage and eventually death threatening situations. The present work reports an amputation and a fracture of the posterior limb, in a specimen of free-living plain parakeet, attended by a veterinary clinic specialized in wild animals. The bird was found on the ground with wires wrapped around its left posterior limb, that caused compression and led to an amputation. The increase of urbanization in Brazil near native forest areas has led to great risk factors for most birds, especially when it comes to building the nest. The method of fixation should be well tolerated and its application must be made in the shortest possible surgery and anesthesia times. This report describes the surgical management of a Harris's hawk who, on orthopedic examination, had functional impotence of the pelvic limb right. A transverse complete fracture of the tibiotarsus was observed on radiographic examination. Closed fracture reduction was chosen and osteosynthesis with hybrid external fixator with tied-in intramedullary pin.

A variety of organisms have been implicated in bone infections such as bacteria and fungi. A male rabbit, with a history of locomotion difficulty, with the presence of a foot injury in both posterior limbs, characterizing bubble foot, which were already ulcerated, edema in the tarsal joints, besides the presence of pus in the region. An x-ray of the posterior limbs was requested, with areas of osteolysis being observed. The animal's history and radiographic result were used to give a presumptive diagnosis of osteomyelitis. As treatment, enrofloxacin therapy was instituted, in addition to cleansing the pododermite with iodine at 1%. The animal did not present improvement in the clinical picture, being submitted to euthanasia.

Tracheal laceration can have several causes, among them by run over, bite, projectile and iatrogeny. Tracheal lesions, although uncommon in companion animals, deserve special attention, since, depending on the severity, they may cause death to the affected patients. The treatment may be conservative or surgical, being the choice dependent on the presentation of the patient. This study is a case report of a laceration of the trachea in a dog by trampling, whose treatment of choice was the surgical one due to the critical state in which the animal presented itself. It all went well, the animal recovered quickly and well.

Dental overgrowth and malocclusion are a common problems in the clinic of rodents raised as companion animals. A guinea pig was attended in a private clinic with clinical signs compatible with dental overgrowth and malocclusion, condition that was diagnosed by radiography. Despite attempts at treatment, the animal was affected by many relapses and was euthanized.O crescimento excessivo e a má oclusão dentária são problemas comuns na clínica de roedores criados como animais de companhia.

NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES: a data set on carnivore distribution in the Neotropics

Mammalian carnivores are considered a key group in maintaining ecological health and can indicate potential ecological integrity in landscapes where they occur. Carnivores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide management and conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropical region: Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Otariidae; Phocidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae. Herein, we include published and unpublished data on native terrestrial Neotropical carnivores (Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae). NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES is a publicly available data set that includes 99,605 data entries from 35,511 unique georeferenced coordinates. Detection/non-detection and quantitative data were obtained from 1818 to 2018 by researchers, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private consultants. Data were collected using several methods including camera trapping, museum collections, roadkill, line transect, and opportunistic records. Literature (peer-reviewed and grey literature) from Portuguese, Spanish and English were incorporated in this compilation. Most of the data set consists of detection data entries (n = 79,343; 79.7%) but also includes non-detection data (n = 20,262; 20.3%). Of those, 43.3% also include count data (n = 43,151). The information available in NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES will contribute to macroecological, ecological, and conservation questions in multiple spatio-temporal perspectives. As carnivores play key roles in trophic interactions, a better understanding of their distribution and habitat requirements are essential to establish conservation management plans and safeguard the future ecological health of Neotropical ecosystems. Our data paper, combined with other large-scale data sets, has great potential to clarify species distribution and related ecological processes within the Neotropics. There are no copyright restrictions and no restriction for using data from this data paper, as long as the data paper is cited as the source of the information used. We also request that users inform us of how they intend to use the data
