    The Relationship Between Housing Affordability and Demographic Factors: Case Study for the Atlanta Beltline

    Housing affordability has been a widely examined subject for populations residing in major metropolitan regions around the world. The relationship between housing affordability and the city’s demographics and its volume of urban development are important to take into consideration. In the past two decades there has been an increasing volume of literature detailing Atlanta Georgia’s large-scale redevelopment project, the Atlanta BeltLine (ABL), and its relationship with Atlanta’s Metropolitan population and housing affordability. The first objective of this paper is to study the relationship between housing affordability at two scales within the Atlanta Metropolitan Area (AMA) for both renters and homeowners. The two separate scales in this study include an area representing the entire ABL loop and ten AMA suburban districts. The second objective is to study the relationship between demographic factors and housing affordability for four cases. The four cases are ABL renters, ABL homeowners, suburban renters, and suburban homeowners. Data for housing affordability and demographics were obtained for the year 2016 from the U.S. Census Bureau website. Data from 208 census tracts were used to represent the ten AMA suburbs selected based on criteria and 39 census tracts to represent the ABL region. The data was analyzed using GIS, t-test, and variations of multiple regression. Findings showed that the average percent of income allocated to pay for monthly housing costs (APIHC) for ABL renters are more influenced by demographics than the APIHC for ABL homeowners and the population living in AMA suburbs. Results showed that the APIHC for ABL renters decreased as median income and number of household earners increased thus improving their status of affordability. An increase in APIHC for ABL renters was tied to an increase in household size. These results can be used to assist in further investigation of renters living near the ABL and how development of the ABL is impacting housing affordability within its vicinity and beyond

    Magnetic field tuning of coplanar waveguide resonators

    We describe measurements on microwave coplanar resonators designed for quantum bit experiments. Resonators have been patterned onto sapphire and silicon substrates, and quality factors in excess of a million have been observed. The resonant frequency shows a high sensitivity to magnetic field applied perpendicular to the plane of the film, with a quadratic dependence for the fundamental, second and third harmonics. Frequency shift of hundreds of linewidths can be obtained.Comment: Accepted for publication in AP

    On the properties of superconducting planar resonators at mK temperatures

    Planar superconducting resonators are now being increasingly used at mK temperatures in a number of novel applications. They are also interesting devices in their own right since they allow us to probe the properties of both the superconductor and its environment. We have experimentally investigated three types of niobium resonators - including a lumped element design - fabricated on sapphire and SiO_2/Si substrates. They all exhibit a non-trivial temperature dependence of their centre frequency and quality factor. Our results shed new light on the interaction between the electromagnetic waves in the resonator and two-level fluctuators in the substrate.Comment: V2 includes some minor corrections/changes.     Women Authors in Medicine: A Gender Based Study on Authorship Opportunities and its Implications in Promotions in Medicine

    Obtaining first authorship in research and published papers is widely held as grounds for promotions and advancements in the medical field. However, the opportunities to be involved in research and to have the primary authorship position are not equally divided amongst specialties, including primary care. Women physicians are becoming a greater percentage of the workforce in primary care, including Internal Medicine and the potential lack of opportunity for authorship may disproportionately affect their promotion. This poster presents the preliminary research on an investigation into the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Department of Medicine gender authorship profiles in the last five years. By utilizing the search engine scopus, a database of the papers written by physicians was created, and gender identifications of the first, second, and last author was made to find correlations between gender and authorship positions. These results will be used to make a case for reexamining the qualifications for promotions, and ensuring that genders have equal opportunity for job advancement and leadership in the medical field.https://jdc.jefferson.edu/sexandgenderhealth/1014/thumbnail.jp

    Circuit QED with a Flux Qubit Strongly Coupled to a Coplanar Transmission Line Resonator

    We propose a scheme for circuit quantum electrodynamics with a superconducting flux-qubit coupled to a high-Q coplanar resonator. Assuming realistic circuit parameters we predict that it is possible to reach the strong coupling regime. Routes to metrological applications, such as single photon generation and quantum non-demolition measurements are discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
