Local conditions for the generalized covariant entropy bound

A set of sufficient conditions for the generalized covariant entropy bound given by Strominger and Thompson is as follows: Suppose that the entropy of matter can be described by an entropy current sas^a. Let kak^a be any null vector along LL and s≡−kasas\equiv -k^a s_a. Then the generalized bound can be derived from the following conditions: (i) s′≤2πTabkakbs'\leq 2\pi T_{ab}k^ak^b, where s'=k^a\grad_a s and TabT_{ab} is the stress energy tensor; (ii) on the initial 2-surface BB, s(0)≤−1/4θ(0)s(0)\leq -{1/4}\theta(0), where θ\theta is the expansion of kak^a. We prove that condition (ii) alone can be used to divide a spacetime into two regions: The generalized entropy bound holds for all light sheets residing in the region where s<−1/4θs<-{1/4}\theta and fails for those in the region where s>−1/4θs>-{1/4}\theta. We check the validity of these conditions in FRW flat universe and a scalar field spacetime. Some apparent violations of the entropy bounds in the two spacetimes are discussed. These holographic bounds are important in the formulation of the holographic principle.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

The Two-Dimensional Analogue of General Relativity

General Relativity in three or more dimensions can be obtained by taking the limit ω→∞\omega\rightarrow\infty in the Brans-Dicke theory. In two dimensions General Relativity is an unacceptable theory. We show that the two-dimensional closest analogue of General Relativity is a theory that also arises in the limit ω→∞\omega\rightarrow\infty of the two-dimensional Brans-Dicke theory.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, preprint DF/IST-17.9

Quasinormal modes and stability of the rotating acoustic black hole: numerical analysis

The study of the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the 2+1 dimensional rotating draining bathtub acoustic black hole, the closest analogue found so far to the Kerr black hole, is performed. Both the real and imaginary parts of the quasinormal (QN) frequencies as a function of the rotation parameter B are found through a full non-linear numerical analysis. Since there is no change in sign in the imaginary part of the frequency as B is increased we conclude that the 2+1 dimensional rotating draining bathtub acoustic black hole is stable against small perturbations.Comment: 6 pages, ReVTeX4. v2. Model independent H(z) reconstruction using the cosmic inverse distance ladder

    Get PDF
Recent distance ladder determinations of the Hubble constant H0H_0 disagree at about the 3.5σ3.5\sigma level with the value determined from Planck measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) assuming a Λ\LambdaCDM cosmology. This discrepancy has prompted speculation that new physics might be required beyond that assumed in the Λ\LambdaCDM model. In this paper, we apply the inverse distance ladder to fit a parametric form of H(z)H(z) to baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and Type Ia supernova data together with priors on the sound horizon at the end of the radiation drag epoch, rdr_d. We apply priors on rdr_d, based on inferences from either Planck or the Wilkinson Microwave Anistropy Probe (WMAP), and demonstrate that these values are consistent with CMB-independent determinations of rdr_d derived from measurements of the primordial deuterium abundance, BAO and supernova data assuming the Λ\LambdaCDM cosmology. The H(z)H(z) constraints that we derive are independent of detailed physics within the dark sector at low redshifts, relying only on the validity of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) metric of General Relativity. For each assumed prior on rdr_d, we find consistency with the inferred value of H0H_0 and the Planck Λ\LambdaCDM value and corresponding tension with the distance ladder estimate

Quasi-normal modes of toroidal, cylindrical and planar black holes in anti-de Sitter spacetimes: scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations

We study the quasi-normal modes (QNM) of scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations of black holes in general relativity whose horizons have toroidal, cylindrical or planar topology in an asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The associated quasinormal frequencies describe the decay in time of the corresponding test field in the vicinities of the black hole. In terms of the AdS/CFT conjecture, the inverse of the frequency is a measure of the dynamical timescale of approach to thermal equilibrium of the corresponding conformal field theory.Comment: Latex, 16 pages. Attack behavior of Podisus rostralis (Heteroptera: pentatomidade) adults on caterpillars of Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: bombycidae).

Thermodynamics of the two-dimensional black hole in the Teitelboim-Jackiw theory

The two-dimensional theory of Teitelboim and Jackiw has constant and negative curvature. In spite of this, the theory admits a black hole solution with no singularities. In this work we study the thermodynamics of this black hole using York's formalism.Comment: 16 pages, Late
