“Sexual Indiscretions, Artistic reflections: Beyond Binaries (Wooster Group’s Vieux Carré).”

International audienceThe contemporary American performance group, the Wooster Group, seems to have staged Tennessee Williams’s Vieux Carré in keeping with the playwright’s idea that “All good art is an indiscretion.” The tension between “art” and “indiscretion” suggests a struggle between order and chaos based on a binary regime of representation resulting in the victory of truth. Sexual indiscretions appear to be a key element as on stage screens display gay pornographic images while sounds register the rhythm of desire by mixing the script, based in the 1930s, and theatrical signs from the 1970s and 2000s. Yet, Williams’s play and LeCompte’s staging offer a reassessment of such binary logic of representation. They create the possibility of productive postmodern indiscretions yielding the subversion of theatrical codes. An opaque indiscretion explores the complex articulations of performance operating on multiple levels and capturing the evanescence of art.

Strain localization analysis using a multiscale model

    Get PDF
In order to analyze the formability of steels in sheet metal forming, a ductility loss criterion is coupled with a multiscale model. The behavior at the mesoscopic (grain) scale is modeled by a large strain micromechanical constitutive law, which is then used in a self-consistent scale transition scheme. Hardening at the slip system level is taken into account through mean dislocation densities considered as internal variables. The determination of active slip systems and the calculation of plastic slip activity are achieved with help of a regularization technique drawn from viscoplastic formulations. The model is shown to be able to correctly simulate the macroscopic behavior for single-phase steels during both monotonic and sequential loading paths. Finally, Rice's localization criterion, based on the ellipticity loss of the elastic-plastic tangent modulus, is introduced and applied to determine forming limit diagrams (FLDs). The model allows us to obtain correct FLDs for monotonic as well as sequential loading paths. Pre-strain impact on FLDs is qualitatively reproduced as well.ArcelorMittal CNR

In the world of performance art, comedians have often been considered as minor artists or even have been rejected as mere commercial products. Yet doesn’t the stand-up tradition – defined by the delivery of fast paced jokes – seek to grasp the essence of laughter? The history of LGBTQ comedians has equally been neglected by the queer theater and performance history. This paper aims at revisiting these histories in order to account for the role of queer laughter thanks to its theoretical and functional effects. By exploring the political and esthetic dimensions of gay, lesbian and transgender people since the 1960s, we can understand the role of laughter in the construction of dissenting practices against white heteronormative norms and domination. This resistance through laughter is articulated here through the queer theoretical notions of dissidentification and counterpublicity present in the three paths taken by this work: political, performative, and subversive laughter

Ellipticity loss analysis for tangent moduli deduced from a large strain elastic–plastic self-consistent model

    Get PDF
In order to investigate the impact of microstructures and deformation mechanisms on the ductility of materials, the criterion first proposed by Rice is applied to elastic–plastic tangent moduli derived from a large strain micromechanical model combined with a self-consistent scale-transition technique. This approach takes into account several microstructural aspects for polycrystalline aggregates: initial and induced textures, dislocation densities as well as softening mechanisms such that the behavior during complex loading paths can be accurately described. In order to significantly reduce the computing time, a new method drawn from viscoplastic formulations is introduced so that the slip system activity can be efficiently determined. The different aspects of the single crystal hardening (self and latent hardening, dislocation storage and annihilation, mean free path, etc.) are taken into account both by the introduction of dislocation densities per slip system as internal variables and the corresponding evolution equations. Comparisons are made with experimental results for single and dual-phase steels involving linear and complex loading paths. Rice’s criterion is then coupled and applied to this constitutive model in order to determine the ellipticity loss of the polycrystalline tangent modulus. This criterion, which does not need any additional “fitting” parameter, is used to build Ellipticity Limit Diagrams (ELDs).ArcelorMittal Researc

Multiscale finite element simulation of forming processes based on crystal plasticity

For the numerical simulation of sheet metal forming processes, the commercial finite element software packages are among the most commonly used. However, these software packages have some limitations; in particular, they essentially contain phenomenological constitutive models and thus do not allow accounting for the physical mechanisms of plasticity that take place at finer scales as well as the associated microstructure evolution. In this context, we propose to couple the Abaqus finite element code with micromechanical simulations based on crystal plasticity and a selfconsistent scale-transition scheme. This coupling strategy will be applied to the simulation of rolling processes, at different reduction rates, in order to estimate the evolution of the mechanical properties. By following some appropriately selected strain paths (i.e., strain lines) along the rolling process, one can also predict the texture evolution of the material as well as other parameters related to its microstructure. Our numerical results are compared with experimental data in the case of ferritic steels produced by ArcelorMittal.French program “Investment in the future” operated by the National Research Agency (ANR)-11-LABX-0008-01, LabEx DAMAS (LST)

Influence of the loading path on the mechanical behavior of metallic materials

Commercial finite element software packages are widely used for the numerical simulation of sheet metal forming processes. However, most of existing software packages present some limitations. In particular, they are essentially based on phenomenological constitutive models and, accordingly, they do not precisely account for physical mechanisms of plasticity that take place at finer scales, or the associated microstructure evolution. In this context, we propose to couple the Abaqus finite element code and the LAM3 code with micromechanical simulation techniques based on crystal plasticity and a self-consistent scale-transition scheme. This coupling strategy will be applied to the simulation of rolling processes in order to assess the influence of the loading path on the evolution of the mechanical properties of the material. By following some appropriately selected strain paths along the rolling process, one can predict the texture evolution of the material as well as other parameters related to its microstructure. Our numerical results are compared with experimental data in the case of ferritic steels elaborated by the steel maker ArcelorMittal.LabEx DAMA

Physically-motivated elasto-visco-plastic model for the large strain-rate behavior of steels

    Get PDF
A physically based elasto-visco-plastic constitutive model is presented and compared to experimental results for a DD14 mild steel. The model requires significantly fewer material parameters compared to other visco-plasticity models from the literature while exhibiting very good accuracy. Accordingly, the parameter identification is simple and intuitive, requiring a relatively small set of experiments. The strain-rate sensitivity modeling is not restricted to a particular hardening law and thus provides a general framework in which advanced hardening equations can be adopted and compared. The model has been implemented in the commercial finite element code Abaqus/Explicit. First predictions compared to experiments are analyzed and underline the effect of hardening law and strain-rate sensitivity on 3D finite element simulations. The model has been also applied as the basis for a homogenization approach at the phase scale; preliminary investigations showed the benefits of coupling such an approach with scale-transition technique where microstructure-relevant data can explicitly enter the model and may be used for material design simulations.ArcelorMitta
