A dynamic building­number locator is able to locate and recognise the building­number, without knowing exactly where the building­number starts in the candidate address line. The overall system achieved a correct sorting rate of 72.9%, 27.1% rejection rate and 0.0% error rate on a blind test set of 450 cursive handwritten addresses.

    General equilibrium models in which compensation for local amenities occurs in both housing and labour markets have been widely used to generate implicit amenity prices and regional quality of life indices. An implication and prospective test of such models is that individuals who are outside the labour market have an incentive to locate in regions where amenities are capitalised into wages. In this paper we construct a measure of the extent of amenity capitalisation into wages for each county in England and Wales. We then test the multimarket amenity model by applying this measure to county-level data on the location of retirees. Our results provide strong support for the mode

    A tomographic technique for aerodynamics at transonic speeds

    Computer aided tomography (CAT) provides a means of noninvasively measuring the air density distribution around an aerodynamic model. This technique is global in that a large portion of the flow field can be measured. A test of the applicability of CAT to transonic velocities was studied. A hemispherical-nose cylinder afterbody model was tested at a Mach number of 0.8 with a new laser holographic interferometer at the 2- by 2-Foot Transonic Wind Tunnel. Holograms of the flow field were taken and were reconstructed into interferograms. The fringe distribution (a measure of the local densities) was digitized for subsequent data reduction. A computer program based on the Fourier-transform technique was developed to convert the fringe distribution into three-dimensional densities around the model. Theoretical aerodynamic densities were calculated for evaluating and assessing the accuracy of the data obtained from the tomographic method

    As a sequel to the previous work [Phys. Rev. B 72, 235104 (2005)] we present a vortex description of the fractionalized phase in exciton bose condensate. Magnetic flux line and monopole of the 3+1D emergent U(1) gauge theory are identified in the exciton picture. A bundle of vortex/anti-vortex pairs of all flavors of excitons corresponds to the magnetic flux line and a point at which the vortices and anti-vortices recombine is identified as magnetic monopole.     Complexified Path Integrals and the Phases of Quantum Field Theory

    The path integral by which quantum field theories are defined is a particular solution of a set of functional differential equations arising from the Schwinger action principle. In fact these equations have a multitude of additional solutions which are described by integrals over a complexified path. We discuss properties of the additional solutions which, although generally disregarded, may be physical with known examples including spontaneous symmetry breaking and theta vacua. We show that a consideration of the full set of solutions yields a description of phase transitions in quantum field theories which complements the usual description in terms of the accumulation of Lee-Yang zeroes. In particular we argue that non-analyticity due to the accumulation of Lee-Yang zeros is related to Stokes phenomena and the collapse of the solution set in various limits including but not restricted to, the thermodynamic limit. A precise demonstration of this relation is given in terms of a zero dimensional model. Finally, for zero dimensional polynomial actions, we prove that Borel resummation of perturbative expansions, with several choices of singularity avoiding contours in the complex Borel plane, yield inequivalent solutions of the action principle equations.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures (newer version has better images
