Sub-diffraction light propagation in fibers with anisotropic dielectric cores
We present a detailed study of light propagation in waveguides with
anisotropic metamaterial cores. We demonstrate that in contrast to conventional
optical fibers, our structures support free-space-like propagating modes even
when the waveguide radius is much smaller than the wavelength. We develop
analytical formalism to describe mode structure and propagation in strongly
anisotropic systems and study the effects related to waveguide boundaries and
material composition
Is there a role for Western herbal medicine in treating cyclic perimenstrual pain and discomfort?
© 2018 The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Conventional treatments for cyclic perimenstrual pain and discomfort, while numerous and diverse, have drawbacks including side effects, interference with women's reproductive function and, importantly, failure to address symptoms. Many women turn to herbal medicine to treat a myriad of menstrual symptoms. Clinical evidence supports the efficacy of Vitex agnus-castus but other medicinal herbs typically used by Western herbalists for treating menstrual symptoms are unsupported by clinical trials. This raises concerns around the efficacy and safety of these herbs. Women's treatment options need to be extended and individualised, where current conventional strategies fail, requiring appropriate clinical trials of potentially useful herbal medicines
Using Super-Imposition by Translation And Rotation (SITAR) to relate pubertal growth to bone health in later life: the Medical Research Council (MRC) National Survey of Health and Development.
BACKGROUND: To explore associations between pubertal growth and later bone health in a cohort with infrequent measurements, using another cohort with more frequent measurements to support the modelling, data from the Medical Research Council (MRC) National Survey of Health and Development (2-26 years, 4901/30 004 subjects/measurements) and the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents And Children (ALSPAC) (5-20 years) (10 896/74 120) were related to National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD) bone health outcomes at 60-64 years. METHODS: NSHD data were analysed using Super-Imposition by Translation And Rotation (SITAR) growth curve analysis, either alone or jointly with ALSPAC data. Improved estimation of pubertal growth parameters of size, tempo and velocity was assessed by changes in model fit and correlations with contemporary measures of pubertal timing. Bone outcomes of radius [trabecular volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and diaphysis cross-sectional area (CSA)] were regressed on the SITAR parameters, adjusted for current body size. RESULTS: The NSHD SITAR parameters were better estimated in conjunction with ALSPAC, i.e. more strongly correlated with pubertal timing. Trabecular vBMD was associated with early height tempo, whereas diaphysis CSA was related to weight size, early tempo and slow velocity, the bone outcomes being around 15% higher for the better vs worse growth pattern. CONCLUSIONS: By pooling NSHD and ALSPAC data, SITAR more accurately summarized pubertal growth and weight gain in NSHD, and in turn demonstrated notable associations between pubertal timing and later bone outcomes. These associations give insight into the importance of the pubertal period for future skeletal health and osteoporosis risk.NSHD: The authors are grateful to NSHD study members who took part in the clinic data collection for their continuing support. Non-perturbative computation of double inclusive gluon production in the Glasma
The near-side ridge observed in A+A collisions at RHIC has been described as
arising from the radial flow of Glasma flux tubes formed at very early times in
the collisions. We investigate the viability of this scenario by performing a
non-perturbative numerical computation of double inclusive gluon production in
the Glasma. Our results support the conjecture that the range of transverse
color screening of correlations determining the size of the flux tubes is a
semi-hard scale, albeit with non-trivial structure. We discuss our results in

Bjorken Flow, Plasma Instabilities, and Thermalization
At asymptotically high energies, thermalization in heavy ion collisions can
be described via weak-coupling QCD. We present a complete treatment of how
thermalization proceeds, at the parametric weak-coupling level. We show that
plasma instabilities dominate the dynamics, from immediately after the
collision until well after the plasma becomes nearly in equilibrium. Initially
they drive the system close to isotropy, but Bjorken expansion and increasing
diluteness makes the system again become more anisotropic. At time \tau ~
\alpha^(-12/5) Q^(-1) the dynamics become dominated by a nearly-thermal bath;
and at time \tau ~ \alpha^(-5/2) Q^(-1)$ the bath comes to dominate the energy
density, completing thermalization. After this time there is a nearly isotropic
and thermal Quark-Gluon Plasma.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure
Shock waves in strongly coupled plasmas
Shock waves are supersonic disturbances propagating in a fluid and giving
rise to dissipation and drag. Weak shocks, i.e., those of small amplitude, can
be well described within the hydrodynamic approximation. On the other hand,
strong shocks are discontinuous within hydrodynamics and therefore probe the
microscopics of the theory. In this paper we consider the case of the strongly
coupled N=4 plasma whose microscopic description, applicable for scales smaller
than the inverse temperature, is given in terms of gravity in an asymptotically
space. In the gravity approximation, weak and strong shocks should be
described by smooth metrics with no discontinuities. For weak shocks we find
the dual metric in a derivative expansion and for strong shocks we use
linearized gravity to find the exponential tail that determines the width of
the shock. In particular we find that, when the velocity of the fluid relative
to the shock approaches the speed of light the penetration depth
scales as . We compare the results with second
order hydrodynamics and the Israel-Stewart approximation. Although they all
agree in the hydrodynamic regime of weak shocks, we show that there is not even
qualitative agreement for strong shocks. For the gravity side, the existence of
shock waves implies that there are disturbances of constant shape propagating

The Precursors and Products of Justice Climates: Group Leader Antecedents and Employee Attitudinal Consequences
Drawing on the organizational justice, organizational climate, leadership and personality, and social comparison theory literatures, we develop hypotheses about the effects of leader personality on the development of three types of justice climates (e.g., procedural, interpersonal, and informational), and the moderating effects of these climates on individual level justice- attitude relationships. Largely consistent with the theoretically-derived hypotheses, the results showed that leader (a) agreeableness was positively related to procedural, interpersonal and informational justice climates, (b) conscientiousness was positively related to a procedural justice climate, and (c) neuroticism was negatively related to all three types of justice climates. Further, consistent with social comparison theory, multilevel data analyses revealed that the relationship between individual justice perceptions and job attitudes (e.g., job satisfaction, commitment) was moderated by justice climate such that the relationships were stronger when justice climate was high
Reducing Bit-Vector Polynomials to SAT using Gröbner Bases
We address the satisfiability of systems of polynomial equations over bit-vectors. Instead of conventional bit-blasting, we exploit word-level inference to translate these systems into non-linear pseudo-boolean constraints. We derive the pseudo-booleans by simulating bit assignments through the addition of (linear) polynomials and applying a strong form of propagation by computing Gröbner bases. By handling bit assignments symbolically, the number of Gröbner basis calculations, along with the number of assignments, is reduced. The final Gröbner basis yields expressions for the bit-vectors in terms of the symbolic bits, together with non-linear pseudo-boolean constraints on the symbolic variables, modulo a power of two. The pseudo-booleans can be solved by translation into classical linear pseudo-boolean constraints (without a modulo) or by encoding them as propositional formulae, for which a novel translation process is described
