Mechanics of animal-drawn wheeled tool carrier.

    Get PDF
The mechanics of animal-drawn wheeled tool carrier has been worked out analysing the forces acting during its field operation. A mathematical model has been developed relating pull required to operate the machine to various operational and design parameters. The analysis shows that the soil resistance force contributes equal to its magnitude and the weight of the chassis plus operator(s) and its changes make little effect on the pull requirement. The effect of other factors such as direction of fesultant soil resistance force, the systems of beam connection to the chassis and coefficient of friction between the wheels and the ground surface on the pull requirement have also been studied and reported in the pape

Development of appropriate mechanization for the "w" - form soil management system.

    Get PDF
The "W" form soil management system consists of shaping the soil surface in the form of a "W" with alternate wide and narrow ridges following the contour. The triangular section wide ridges serve as a rainwater harvesting zone, the trapezoidal section narrow ridges as the planting zone and the furrows as water-storage zones and pathways for animals and wheels. The system, which was designed to improve 'in situ' rainwater harvesting and control of run-off and erosion, has also shown promising results in: (1) facilitating separate and selective tillage operations for different zones, (2) decreasing the animal and tractor horurs requirement, (3) reducing compaction in the planting zone and (4) permitting localized application of soil conditioners, thus resulting in higher yield and ensured crop production. The operational requirements for implementing and reshaping the system are described in detail for two types of mechanization, one for animal traction and another for tractor traction. Implementation of the system requires 6-8 h ha-1 with animal traction and 2-3 ha-1 with tractor traction as compared to 20-22 ha-1 and 6-8 ha-1 required in the traditional system of flat cultivation with animal and tractor traction, respectively

The major part of northeast Brazil is classified as arid and serni-arid, with an annual precipitation of 400-600 mm, poorly distributed and highly unpredictable. Therefore, chances of success in crop production are slim. The responsibility for developing suitable agricultural techniques for this region lies with the Centre of Agricultural Research for the Semi-Arid Tropics (CPATSA) of the Brazilian Enterprise for Agricultural Research (EMBRAPA), which is located at Petrolina (PE), Brazil

Animal-drawn wheeled tool carrier: an appropriate mechanization for improved farming systems.

    Get PDF
The animal-drawn wheeled tool carriers were developed to carry out transportation and other agricultural operations by one single frame thus reducing the cost of machinery systems. They have not gained the expected popularity among a large majority of farmers because until recently they tried as alternative to traditional single-pourpose machinery system which did not present sufficient time saving advantage to justify heavy investments. The recent experiences at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), India and the Centre of Agricultural Research for the Semi-Arid Tropics, Petrolina,PE, Brazil (CPATSA) in the adoption of this type machinery system as an integrated component of improved farming systems has shown the possibility of increasing crop production and better time saving advantage even for small land holdings

Integrating Stakeholder Input into Water Policy Development and Analysis

    Get PDF
Agricultural water use is becoming an issue in much of the South due to population growth. Results of projects evaluating the impacts of conservation strategies aimed at reallocating or extending the life of water supplies are being met with great skepticism by stakeholder groups. In order to gain acceptance of results, it is essential that stakeholder groups be involved from the beginning in the identification of potential water conservation strategies and be kept informed throughout the project. The objective of this paper is to review previous attempts at involving stakeholders and the methodology currently being employed in the Ogallala Aquifer Project.conservation, Ogallala Aquifer, stakeholder, water policy, Agribusiness, Agricultural and Food Policy, Consumer/Household Economics, Q250, Q280,
