Diabolical points in the magnetic spectrum of Fe_8 molecules
The magnetic molecule Fe_8 has been predicted and observed to have a rich
pattern of degeneracies in its spectrum as an external magnetic field is
varied. These degeneracies have now been recognized to be diabolical points.
This paper analyzes the diabolicity and all essential properties of this system
using elementary perturbation theory. A variety of arguments is gievn to
suggest that an earlier semiclassical result for a subset of these points may
be exactly true for arbitrary spinComment: uses europhys.sty package; 3 embedded ps figure
Instanton picture of the spin tunneling in the Lipkin model
A consistent theory of the ground state energy and its splitting due to the
process of tunneling for the Lipkin model is presented. For the functional
integral in terms of the spin coherent states for the partition function of the
model we accurately calculate the trivial and the instanton saddle point
contributions. We show that such calculation has to be perfomed very accurately
taking into account the discrete nature of the functional integral. Such
accurate consideration leads to finite corrections to a naive continous
consideration. We present comparison with numerical calculation of the ground
state energy and the tunneling splitting and with the results obtained by the
quasiclassical method and get excellent agreement.Comment: REVTEX, 32 pages, 3 figure
Statistical mechanics of temporal association in neural networks with transmission delays
We study the representation of static patterns and temporal sequences in neural networks with signal delays and a stochastic parallel dynamics. For a wide class of delay distributions, the asymptotic network behavior can be described by a generalized Gibbs distribution, generated by a novel Lyapunov functional for the determination dynamics. We extend techniques of equilibrium statistical mechanics so as to deal with time-dependent phenomena, derive analytic results for both retrieval quality and storage capacity, and compare them with numerical simulations
Oscillatory Tunnel Splittings in Spin Systems: A Discrete Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin Approach
Certain spin Hamiltonians that give rise to tunnel splittings that are viewed
in terms of interfering instanton trajectories, are restudied using a discrete
WKB method, that is more elementary, and also yields wavefunctions and
preexponential factors for the splittings. A novel turning point inside the
classically forbidden region is analysed, and a general formula is obtained for
the splittings. The result is appled to the \Fe8 system. A previous result for
the oscillation of the ground state splitting with external magnetic field is
extended to higher levels.Comment: RevTex, one ps figur
Quantum phase interference and spin parity in Mn12 single-molecule magnets
Magnetization measurements of Mn12 molecular nanomagnets with spin ground
states of S = 10 and S = 19/2 showresonance tunneling at avoided energy level
crossings. The observed oscillations of the tunnel probability as a function of
the magnetic field applied along the hard anisotropy axis are due to
topological quantum phase interference of two tunnel paths of opposite
windings. Spin-parity dependent tunneling is established by comparing the
quantum phase interference of integer and half-integer spin systems.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
On the Observability of Meso- and Macro-scopic Quantum Coherence of Domain Walls in Magnetic Insulators
Results are presented of a numerical calculation of the tunneling gap for a
domain wall moving in the double well potential of a pair of voids in a
magnetic insulator. Both symmetric and asymmetric double well potentials are
considered. It is found that, even in the absence of dissipation, the prospects
for observing quantum coherence on a meso- or macro-scopic scale appears
unlikely.Comment: 15 pages, Plain LaTex, UBC TP-93-1
Strong Coupling Theory of Two Level Atoms in Periodic Fields
We present a new convergent strong coupling expansion for two-level atoms in
external periodic fields, free of secular terms. As a first application, we
show that the coherent destruction of tunnelling is a third-order effect. We
also present an exact treatment of the high-frequency region, and compare it
with the theory of averaging. The qualitative frequency spectrum of the
transition probability amplitude contains an effective Rabi frequency.Comment: 4 pages with 3 figure
