The review highlights the need to understand paternalistic leadership as an approach to establishing productive relationships within a cultural context, with implications for researchers and practitioners in both collectivist and individualistic cultures

    Paternalistic Leadership and Employee Responses in Javanese Culture

    Abstract: While much has been written about leadership research, little effort has been made to identify what constitutes effective leadership in an Indonesian cultural context. Paternalistic leadership is an emerging body of research that has been adapted to the Indonesian context. Javanese cultural values provide a foundation for an Indonesian form of Paternalistic Leadership (PLI). In this study, 178 civil servants in the province of Yogyakarta Special Region, where surveyed in order to examine their responses to the dimensions of PLI. Results suggested that effective PLI emphasises a leaders visibility, benevolence and courage. Authority and impartiality need to be expressed in ways that align with traditional Javanese values. Suggestions of the direction for further study are presented. Abstrak: Fakta bahwa penelitian kepemimpinan sudah banyak dikaji, akan tetapi sangat sedikit riset dilakukan dalam konteks kepemimpinan efektif yang berakar pada budaya Indonesia. Kepemimpinan paternalistik merupakan wacana riset yang sedang berkembang saat ini dan diadopsi untuk konteks budaya Indonesia. Nilai budaya Jawa memberikan fondasi yang kuat untuk model kepemimpinan paternalisik (PLI). Dalam studi ini, 178 PNS di lingkungan Pemerintah Provinsi DIY di survey untuk menilai respon mereka terhadap model PLI. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa PLI yang efektif menekankan pada pentingnya pemimpin untuk selalu tampak, berbuat kebajikan serta mempunyai keberanian diri. Kepemimpinan otoriter dan adil perlu juga ditunjukkan agar selaras dengan nilai-nilai budaya Jawa. Saran-saran serta direksi untuk studi di masa yang akan datang juga dipaparkan dalam artikel ini

    Kepler Mission Stellar and Instrument Noise Properties Revisited

    An earlier study of the Kepler Mission noise properties on time scales of primary relevance to detection of exoplanet transits found that higher than expected noise followed to a large extent from the stars, rather than instrument or data analysis performance. The earlier study over the first six quarters of Kepler data is extended to the full four years ultimately comprising the mission. Efforts to improve the pipeline data analysis have been successful in reducing noise levels modestly as evidenced by smaller values derived from the current data products. The new analyses of noise properties on transit time scales show significant changes in the component attributed to instrument and data analysis, with essentially no change in the inferred stellar noise. We also extend the analyses to time scales of several days, instead of several hours to better sample stellar noise that follows from magnetic activity. On the longer time scale there is a shift in stellar noise for solar-type stars to smaller values in comparison to solar values.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted by A

    Library of medium-resolution fiber optic echelle spectra of F, G, K, and M field dwarfs to giants stars

    We present a library of Penn State Fiber Optic Echelle (FOE) observations of a sample of field stars with spectral types F to M and luminosity classes V to I. The spectral coverage is from 3800 AA to 10000 AA with nominal a resolving power 12000. These spectra include many of the spectral lines most widely used as optical and near-infrared indicators of chromospheric activity such as the Balmer lines (H_alpha, H_beta), Ca II H & K, Mg I b triplet, Na I D_{1} and D_{2}, He I D_{3}, and Ca II IRT lines. There are also a large number of photospheric lines, which can also be affected by chromospheric activity, and temperature sensitive photospheric features such as TiO bands. The spectra have been compiled with the goal of providing a set of standards observed at medium resolution. We have extensively used such data for the study of active chromosphere stars by applying a spectral subtraction technique. However, the data set presented here can also be utilized in a wide variety of ways ranging from radial velocity templates to study of variable stars and stellar population synthesis. This library can also be used for spectral classification purposes and determination of atmospheric parameters (T_eff, log{g}, [Fe/H]). A digital version of all the fully reduced spectra is available via ftp and the World Wide Web (WWW) in FITS format.Comment: Latex file with 17 pages, 4 figures.     Biodegradable Shooting Targets Acidify Soils, Limit Plant Growth, and Mobilize Lead

    Environmental waste from recreational shotgun shooting includes lead pellet and target debris. The main risk of lead pellets is that they can be ingested by birds as they swallow pebbles and grit that aid in digestion. Another possible vector of toxicity is when acidic soil conditions mobilize lead ions from the solid pellets into the soil and groundwater. Historically, secondary waste resulted from petroleum pitch based targets that persisted in the environment for years. To reduce the environmental lifetime of targets, biodegradable targets were developed. At a former sporting clay shooting range in Florence, Montana, we found that as biodegradable targets degraded, their sulfuric components oxidized to release acid; as a result, soil pH was as low as 2. Target abundance correlated with decreased soil pH (?=-0.681, P<0.001) and decreased plant cover (p=-0.770, P<0.001). These acidic soils increased the mobility of lead from shot pellets and now lead concentrations exceed background. Our results demonstrate that biodegradable shooting targets exacerbate the environmental hazards that result from lead shotfall. Careful considerations regarding target composition and shooting locations may minimize environmental exposure to toxicants
