    Boundary Conditions for Three-Body Scattering in Configuration Space

    The asymptotic behavior of three-body scattering wave functions in configuration space is studied by considering a model equation that has the same asymptotic form as the Faddeev equations. Boundary conditions for the wave function are derived, and their validity is verified by numerical calculations. It is shown that these boundary conditions for the partial differential equation can be used to obtain accurate numerical solutions for the wave function.Comment: 25 pages, revtex, 9 figures.     Interference-Free Broadband Single- and Multi-Carrier DS-CDMA

    The choice of the direct sequence spreading code in DS-CDMA predetermines the properties of the system. This contribution demonstrates that the family of codes exhibiting an interference-free window (IFW) outperforms classic spreading codes, provided that the interfering multi-user and multipath components arrive within this IFW, which may be ensured with the aid of quasi-synchronous adaptive timing advance control. It is demonstrated that the IFW duration may be extended with the advent of multicarrier DS-CDMA proportionately to the number of subcarriers. Hence, the resultant MC DS-CDMA system is capable of exhibiting nearsingle-user performance without employing a multi-user detector. A limitation of the system is that the number of spreading codes exhibiting a certain IFW is limited, although this problem may be mitigated with the aid of novel code design principles

    As part of the support program for the Atmospheric General Circulation Experiment, laboratory studies of baroclinic and other convective instabilities were performed for a thin layer of fluid between thermally conducting horizontal discs. There were three types of modes identified. The first has a spiral-arm appearance, and exists for large enough horizontal thermal forcing, weak enough static stability, and large enough rotation. The source of this wave is shown to be the Eady mode of instability. The second mode is due to convective instability in the thermal boundary layers which exist due to the thermally conducting horizontal boundaries. Finally, for strong enough negative static stability, thermal convection of the Benard type appears. The most significant result is that the symmetric (Solberg) mode was not found, even though the infinite-plane theory predicts this mode under certain experimental conditions

    We study the lowest energy E of a relativistic system of N identical bosons bound by harmonic-oscillator pair potentials in three spatial dimensions. In natural units the system has the semirelativistic ``spinless-Salpeter'' Hamiltonian H = \sum_{i=1}^N \sqrt{m^2 + p_i^2} + \sum_{j>i=1}^N gamma |r_i - r_j|^2, gamma > 0. We derive the following energy bounds: E(N) = min_{r>0} [N (m^2 + 2 (N-1) P^2 / (N r^2))^1/2 + N (N-1) gamma r^2 / 2], N \ge 2, where P=1.376 yields a lower bound and P=3/2 yields an upper bound for all N \ge 2. A sharper lower bound is given by the function P = P(mu), where mu = m(N/(gamma(N-1)^2))^(1/3), which makes the formula for E(2) exact: with this choice of P, the bounds coincide for all N \ge 2 in the Schroedinger limit m --> infinity.Comment: v2: A scale analysis of P is now included; this leads to revised energy bounds, which coalesce in the large-m limi

    Stellar Velocity Dispersion and Black Hole Mass in the Blazar Markarian 501

    The recently discovered correlation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion provides a new method to determine the masses of black holes in active galaxies. We have obtained optical spectra of Markarian 501, a nearby gamma-ray blazar with emission extending to TeV energies. The stellar velocity dispersion of the host galaxy, measured from the calcium triplet lines in a 2"x3.7" aperture, is 372 +/- 18 km/s. If Mrk 501 follows the M-sigma correlation defined for local galaxies, then its central black hole has a mass of (0.9-3.4)x10^9 solar masses. This is significantly larger than some previous estimates for the central mass in Mrk 501 that have been based on models for its nonthermal emission. The host galaxy luminosity implies a black hole of 6x10^8 solar masses, but this is not in severe conflict with the mass derived from the M-sigma relation because the M_BH-L_bulge correlation has a large intrinsic scatter. Using the emission-line luminosity to estimate the bolometric luminosity of the central engine, we find that Mrk 501 radiates at an extremely sub-Eddington level of L/L_Edd ~ 10^-4. Further applications of the M-sigma relation to radio-loud active galactic nuclei may be useful for interpreting unified models and understanding the relationship between radio galaxies and BL Lac objects.Comment: To appear in ApJ Letters. 5 pages, 2 figure
