    Emerging issues and current trends in assistive technology use 2007-1010: practising, assisting and enabling learning for all

    Following an earlier review in 2007, a further review of the academic literature relating to the uses of assistive technology (AT) by children and young people was completed, covering the period 2007-2011. As in the earlier review, a tripartite taxonomy: technology uses to train or practise, technology uses to assist learning and technology uses to enable learning, was used in order to structure the findings. The key markers for research in this field and during these three years were user involvement, AT on mobile mainstream devices, the visibility of AT, technology for interaction and collaboration, new and developing interfaces and inclusive design principles. The paper concludes by locating these developments within the broader framework of the Digital Divide

    p53 mutations in human cutaneous melanoma correlate with sun exposure but are not always involved in melanomagenesis

    In melanoma, the relationship between sun exposure and the origin of mutations in either the N-ras oncogene or the p53 tumour-suppressor gene is not as clear as in other types of skin cancer. We have previously shown that mutations in the N-ras gene occur more frequently in melanomas originating from sun-exposed body sites, indicating that these mutations are UV induced. To investigate whether sun exposure also affects p53 in melanoma, we analysed 81 melanoma specimens for mutations in the p53 gene. The mutation frequency is higher than thus far reported: 17 specimens (21%) harbour one or more p53 mutations. Strikingly, 17 out of 22 mutations in p53 are of the C:G to T:A or CC:GG to TT:AA transitional type, strongly suggesting an aetiology involving UV exposure. Interestingly, the p53 mutation frequency in metastases was much lower than in primary tumours. In the case of metastases, a role for sun exposure was indicated by the finding that the mutations are present exclusively in skin metastases and not in internal metastases. Together with a relatively frequent occurrence of silent third-base pair mutations in primary melanomas, this indicates that the p53 mutations, at least in these tumours, have not contributed to melanomagenesis and may have originated after establishment of the primary tumour. 1999 Cancer Research Campaig

    The investigation and provenance of glass vessel fragments attributed to the tomb of Amenhotep II, KV35, Valley of the Kings

    Four polychrome glass fragments, excavated from tomb KV35 in the Valley of the Kings, attributed to Amenhotep II, were analysed to further investigate the composition and provenance of early Late Bronze Age glasses. An additional fragment, EA64163, cited by the British Museum as being stylistically analogous to the fragments from KV35, although with a findspot simply recorded as "Thebes", was also analysed. LA-ICP-MS analysis was used to analyse multiple colours on the fragments to determine the major element composition, the colouring strategies and establish provenance using trace element analysis. The resulting data obtained was compared with four polychrome fragments of standard LBA Egyptian composition, excavated from the palace of Amenhotep III at Malkata, previously analysed by SEM-WDS. Analysis showed that the glasses excavated from KV35 are standard LBA glass of Egyptian composition and were most likely produced in Egypt in the 18th Dynasty. The fragment EA64163 is a low magnesia, low potash glass, comparable with Iron Age composition, therefore should be reconsidered as a later glass. The analysis of glasses, excavated from a reliable, early Egyptian context supports the proposition that glass technology for multiple colours was established in Egypt at least as early as 1400 BCE

The relevance of Apaf1, the molecular core of apoptosome, has been underlined in mitochondria-dependent apoptosis, which according to a growing body of evidence, is involved in various pathologies where the equilibrium of life-and-death is dysregulated, such as heart attack, stroke, liver failure, cancer and autoimmune diseases. Consequently, great interest has emerged in devising therapeutic strategies for regulating the key molecules involved in the life-and-death decision. Here we review recent progress in apoptosis-based pharmacological therapies and, in particular, we point out a possible role of the apoptosome as an emerging and promising pharmacological target

    High expression of the c-myc oncogene renders melanoma cells prone to lysis by natural killer cells

    NK cells kill a wide variety of tumor cells, but usually leave normal cells intact. It was earlier reported that low class I HLA expression can be one of the factors that render target cells relatively susceptible to NK lysis. In this contribution, we show that in human melanomas the class I HLA expression is down-modulated by high expression of transfected c-myc oncogenes. The extent of down-modulation depended on the level of c-myc expression in a dose-dependent way. Taken together, these data suggested to us that one of the results of high c-myc expression could be the induction of a NK susceptible phenotype in melanoma cells. Therefore, we analyzed the effect of c-myc on NK susceptibility. We have found that high expression of transfected c-myc genes indeed converts the melanoma cell lines from poor into good targets for NK cells. IFN-gamma was used to restore the class I HLA expression of the c-myc transfectants, and the resulting cells showed a decreased NK susceptibility.
