The system of EAS time analysis

    Get PDF
The extensive air showers' (EAS) front shape, angle of incidence, disk thickness, particle distribution along the shower, on the delayed and EAS front advancing particles were determined. The suggested system of the EAS time analysis allows determination of the whole EAS longitudinal structure at the observation points. The information from the detectors is continuously recorded in the memory with the memory cell switching in 5 ns, this enables fixation of the moment of pulse input from the detector with an accuracy to + or - 2.5 ns. Along with the fast memory, a slow memory with the cell switching in 1 micron s is introduced in the system, this permits observation of relatively large time intervals with respect to the trigger pulse with an appropriately lower accuracy

We carried out studies on water deficiency of Sambucus nigra L. (black elderberry) plant leaves extract and fruit juice, relative turgidity, sucrose content in fruits, chlorophyll content in the leaves, as well as gas exchange rates in the leaves, in particular, the changes in the concentrations of oxygen released during photosynthesis by leaves and carbon dioxide released during leaf respiration depending on habitat conditions (altitude of the habitat, position of slopes, average annual precipitation). Taking into account the difference in climatic conditions and the generality of some indicators, Vanadzor (1326–1600 m above sea level) and Stepanavan (1400–1830 m above sea level) regions of Lori Province, "Dilijan" National Park, Lake Parz, and the forest areas adjacent to the city of Dilijan (1240–1612 m above sea level) in Tavush Province in Armenia were chosen as the research sites. The test samples were taken from eight different test sites in Lori and Tavush provinces. Tavush Province is more humid than Lori Province. The highest rate of water deficiency in the leaves of the studied plants was recorded in S. nigra f. laciniata (L.) Zabel., and the lowest in S. nigra in Vanadzor forest. It can be assumed that the index of water deficiency in the leaves may depend on the position of the slopes of the test sites and the value of the filtration coefficient of the soil types. On the north-facing slope at the height of 1341 m above sea level and on the south-facing slope at the height of 1830 m above sea level, the values of water deficiency of the leaves are almost the same. Such data allows us to assume that the degree of water deficiency in the leaves is also affected by the filtration coefficient of habitat soil types. In two points that have north-facing positions, the water deficiency of leaves at the height of 1341 m above sea level is 2.14 times more than at the height of 1328 m above sea level. At 1328 m above sea level the filtration coefficient is small and the plant absorbs a lot of water. Based on the data we received we obtained rankings of plants according to the different criteria of the experimental plants: water deficiency in leaves tissues, relative turgidity, the sum of chlorophylls in the leaves, the sucrose content in the fruits, percentage of oxygen released as a result of photosynthesis, percentage of carbon dioxide released as a result of respiration. We found a certain dependence between the indicators of the water regime and the height above sea level of the researched habitats. We also found out that the water regime is influenced by certain microclimatic conditions such as the position of the slopes, whether they are north or south facing, as well as the average annual precipitation. Knowing the physiological processes taking place in the vegetative and generative organs of the S. nigra plant is important from the point of view of evaluating the intensity of growth and development of the generative organs. We consider that the results of the study will be applicable in the process of plant selection based on the indicators of the physiological processes taking place in the plant organism

Disorder-induced tail states in a gapped bilayer graphene

The instanton approach to the in-gap fluctuation states is applied to the spectrum of biased bilayer graphene. It is shown that the density of states falls off with energy measured from the band-edge as ν(ϵ)exp(ϵ/ϵt3/2)\nu(\epsilon)\propto \exp(-|\epsilon/\epsilon_t|^{3/2}), where the characteristic tail energy, ϵt\epsilon_t, scales with the concentration of impurities, nin_i, as ni2/3n_i^{2/3}. While the bare energy spectrum is characterized by two energies: the bias-induced gap, VV, and interlayer tunneling, tt_{\perp}, the tail, ϵt\epsilon_t, contains a {\it single} combination V1/3t2/3V^{1/3}t_{\perp}^{2/3}. We show that the above expression for ν(ϵ)\nu(\epsilon) in the tail actually applies all the way down to the mid-gap.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

Wightman function and vacuum densities for a Z_2-symmetric thick brane in AdS spacetime

Positive frequency Wightman function, vacuum expectation values of the field square and the energy-momentum tensor induced by a Z_{2}-symmetric brane with finite thickness located on (D+1)- dimensional AdS background are evaluated for a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling parameter. For the general case of static plane symmetric interior structure the expectation values in the region outside the brane are presented as the sum of free AdS and brane induced parts. For a conformally coupled massless scalar the brane induced part in the vacuum energy-momentum tensor vanishes. In the limit of strong gravitational fields the brane induced parts are exponentially suppressed for points not too close to the brane boundary. As an application of general results a special model is considered in which the geometry inside the brane is a slice of the Minkowski spacetime orbifolded along the direction perpendicular to the brane. For this model the Wightman function, vacuum expectation values of the field square and the energy-momentum tensor inside the brane are evaluated as well and their behavior is discussed in various asymptotic regions of the parameters. It is shown that for both minimally and conformally coupled scalar fields the interior vacuum forces acting on the brane boundaries tend to decrease the brane thickness.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, discussion adde

Vacuum densities for a thick brane in AdS spacetime

For a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling parameter we evaluate Wightman function, vacuum expectation values of the field square and the energy-momentum tensor induced by a Z2Z_{2}-symmetric brane with finite thickness located on (D+1)(D+1)-dimensional AdS bulk. For this model the Wightman function, vacuum expectation values of the field square and the energy-momentum tensor inside the brane are evaluated. It is shown that for both minimally and conformally coupled scalar fields the interior vacuum forces acting on the brane boundaries tend to decrease the brane thickness.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, talk presented at QFEXT07, Leipzig, September 17-21, 200

One-dimensional plasmons confined in bilayer graphene p-n junctions

Gapless spectrum of graphene allows easy spatial separation of electrons and holes with an external in-plane electric field. Guided collective plasmon modes can propagate along the separation line, whose amplitude decays with the distance to it. Their spectrum and direction of propagation can be controlled with the strength and direction of in-plane electric field. In case of a bilayer graphene additional control is possible by the perpendicular electric field that opens a gap in the band spectrum of electrons. We investigate guided plasmon spectra in bilayer p-n junctions using hydrodynamics of charged electron liquid.Comment: published version, minor change

Non-Bloch-Siegert-type power-induced shift of two-photon electron paramagnetic resonances of charge-carrier spin states in an OLED

We present Floquet theory-based predictions and electrically detected magnetic resonance (EDMR) experiments scrutinizing the nature of two-photon magnetic resonance shifts of charge-carrier spin states in the perdeuterated π\pi-conjugated polymer poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] (d-MEH-PPV) under strong magnetic resonant drive conditions (radiation amplitude B1B_1 ~ Zeeman field B0B_0). Numerical calculations show that the two-photon resonance shift with power is nearly drive-helicity independent. This is in contrast to the one-photon Bloch-Siegert shift that only occurs under non-circularly polarized strong drive conditions. We therefore treated the Floquet Hamiltonian analytically under arbitrary amplitudes of the co- and counter-rotating components of the radiation field to gain insight into the nature of the helicity dependence of multi-photon resonance shifts. In addition, we tested Floquet-theory predictions experimentally by comparing one-photon and two-photon charge-carrier spin resonance shifts observed through room-temperature EDMR experiments on d-MEH-PPV-based bipolar injection devices [i.e., organic light emitting diode structures (OLEDs)]. We found that under the experimental conditions of strong, linearly polarized drive, our observations consistently agree with theory, irrespective of the magnitude of B1B_1, and therefore underscore the robustness of Floquet theory in predicting nonlinear magnetic resonance behaviors.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure

Vacuum fluctuations and topological Casimir effect in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with compact dimensions

We investigate the Wightman function, the vacuum expectation values of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor for a massless scalar field with general curvature coupling parameter in spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes with an arbitrary number of toroidally compactified dimensions. The topological parts in the expectation values are explicitly extracted and in this way the renormalization is reduced to that for the model with trivial topology. In the limit when the comoving lengths of the compact dimensions are very short compared to the Hubble length, the topological parts coincide with those for a conformal coupling and they are related to the corresponding quantities in the flat spacetime by standard conformal transformation. In the opposite limit of large comoving lengths of the compact dimensions, in dependence of the curvature coupling parameter, two regimes are realized with monotonic or oscillatory behavior of the vacuum expectation values. In the monotonic regime and for nonconformally and nonminimally coupled fields the vacuum stresses are isotropic and the equation of state for the topological parts in the energy density and pressures is of barotropic type. In the oscillatory regime, the amplitude of the oscillations for the topological part in the expectation value of the field squared can be either decreasing or increasing with time, whereas for the energy-momentum tensor the oscillations are damping.Comment: 20 pages, 2 figure

Stationary theory of heat-conductivity for an axi-symmetrical piece homogeneous space with circular inclusion

    No full text
This paper discusses the theory of thermo-conductivity due steady-state heat flow of semi-infinite homogeneous solids containing a perfectly rigid circular inclusion located on the plane where the two half-solids are joint. The half-spaces have different thermo-physical characteristics and a steady heat flow is applied to the solids. The effects of selected spatial heat sources are also investigated. Mathematical model and general solution is presented along with selected particular cases and simulations, followed by pertinent discussions and conclusion
