Testing Linear-Invariant Non-Linear Properties
We consider the task of testing properties of Boolean functions that are
invariant under linear transformations of the Boolean cube. Previous work in
property testing, including the linearity test and the test for Reed-Muller
codes, has mostly focused on such tasks for linear properties. The one
exception is a test due to Green for "triangle freeness": a function
f:\cube^{n}\to\cube satisfies this property if do not all
equal 1, for any pair x,y\in\cube^{n}.
Here we extend this test to a more systematic study of testing for
linear-invariant non-linear properties. We consider properties that are
described by a single forbidden pattern (and its linear transformations), i.e.,
a property is given by points v_{1},...,v_{k}\in\cube^{k} and
f:\cube^{n}\to\cube satisfies the property that if for all linear maps
L:\cube^{k}\to\cube^{n} it is the case that do
not all equal 1. We show that this property is testable if the underlying
matroid specified by is a graphic matroid. This extends
Green's result to an infinite class of new properties.
Our techniques extend those of Green and in particular we establish a link
between the notion of "1-complexity linear systems" of Green and Tao, and

Fragmentation of Nuclei at Intermediate and High Energies in Modified Cascade Model
The process of nuclear multifragmentation has been implemented, together with
evaporation and fission channels of the disintegration of excited remnants in
nucleus-nucleus collisions using percolation theory and the intranuclear
cascade model. Colliding nuclei are treated as face--centered--cubic lattices
with nucleons occupying the nodes of the lattice. The site--bond percolation
model is used. The code can be applied for calculation of the fragmentation of
nuclei in spallation and multifragmentation reactions.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figure
Systems of Care and the Prevention of Mental Health Problems for Children and their Families: Integrating Counseling Psychology and Public Health Perspectives
The purpose of this paper is to present systems of care as an example of how counseling psychology and public health overlap with regards to prevention and intervention approaches for children\u27s mental health. A framework for prevention is presented as is the state of children\u27s mental health promotion, with a particular focus on ecological and systemic approaches to children\u27s mental health and how these approaches cut across multiple perspectives. Systems of care are highlighted as an example of the congruence of prevention and ecological or systemic approaches to address the mental health promotion of children and their families, with the potential to impact at the universal, selective, and indicated levels of risk. Results from a longitudinal outcome study of a school-based system of care are presented to exemplify the positive outcomes experienced by children. An increase in the awareness and implementation of systems of care across mental health perspectives is recommended, along with continued research from the public health and counseling psychology communities focused on which prevention and intervention services within systems of care work, why they work, and how they can be improved upon
Secondary Sex Ratio among Women Exposed to Diethylstilbestrol in Utero
BACKGROUND. Diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic estrogen widely prescribed to pregnant women during the mid-1900s, is a potent endocrine disruptor. Previous studies have suggested an association between endocrine-disrupting compounds and secondary sex ratio. METHODS. Data were provided by women participating in the National Cancer Institute (NCI) DES Combined Cohort Study. We used generalized estimating equations to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the relation of in utero DES exposure to sex ratio (proportion of male births). Models were adjusted for maternal age, child's birth year, parity, and cohort, and accounted for clustering among women with multiple pregnancies. RESULTS. The OR for having a male birth comparing DES-exposed to unexposed women was 1.05 (95% CI, 0.95-1.17). For exposed women with complete data on cumulative DES dose and timing (33%), those first exposed to DES earlier in gestation and to higher doses had the highest odds of having a male birth. The ORs were 0.91 (95% C, 0.65-1.27) for first exposure at ≥ 13 weeks gestation to < 5 g DES; 0.95 (95% CI, 0.71-1.27) for first exposure at ≥ 13 weeks to ≥ 5 g; 1.16 (95% CI, 0.96-1.41) for first exposure at < 13 weeks to < 5 g; and 1.24 (95% CI, 1.04-1.48) for first exposure at < 13 weeks to ≥ 5 g compared with no exposure. Results did not vary appreciably by maternal age, parity, cohort, or infertility history. CONCLUSIONS. Overall, no association was observed between in utero DES exposure and secondary sex ratio, but a significant increase in the proportion of male births was found among women first exposed to DES earlier in gestation and to a higher cumulative dose.National Cancer Institute (N01-CP-21168, N01-CP-51017, N01-CP-01289
Inferring individual attributes from search engine queries and auxiliary information
Internet data has surfaced as a primary source for investigation of different
aspects of human behavior. A crucial step in such studies is finding a suitable
cohort (i.e., a set of users) that shares a common trait of interest to
researchers. However, direct identification of users sharing this trait is
often impossible, as the data available to researchers is usually anonymized to
preserve user privacy. To facilitate research on specific topics of interest,
especially in medicine, we introduce an algorithm for identifying a trait of
interest in anonymous users. We illustrate how a small set of labeled examples,
together with statistical information about the entire population, can be
aggregated to obtain labels on unseen examples. We validate our approach using
labeled data from the political domain.
We provide two applications of the proposed algorithm to the medical domain.
In the first, we demonstrate how to identify users whose search patterns
indicate they might be suffering from certain types of cancer. In the second,
we detail an algorithm to predict the distribution of diseases given their
incidence in a subset of the population at study, making it possible to predict
disease spread from partial epidemiological data
Achieving sub-diffraction imaging through bound surface states in negative-refracting photonic crystals at the near-infrared
We report the observation of imaging beyond the diffraction limit due to
bound surface states in negative refraction photonic crystals. We achieve an
effective negative index figure-of-merit [-Re(n)/Im(n)] of at least 380, ~125x
improvement over recent efforts in the near-infrared, with a 0.4 THz bandwidth.
Supported by numerical and theoretical analyses, the observed near-field
resolution is 0.47 lambda, clearly smaller than the diffraction limit of 0.61
lambda. Importantly, we show this sub-diffraction imaging is due to the
resonant excitation of surface slab modes, allowing refocusing of
non-propagating evanescent waves
An Examination of Exposure to Traumatic Events and Symptoms and Strengths for Children Served in a Behavioral Health System of Care
The present study examined how exposure to traumatic events impacts children with severe emotional disturbance who are being served in a school-based system of care. Multilevel growth curve models were used to examine the relationships between a child’s history of traumatic events (physical abuse, sexual abuse, or domestic violence) and behavioral and emotional strengths, internalizing problem behaviors, or externalizing problem behaviors over 18 months. Results indicate that children receiving services (N = 134) exhibited increased emotional and behavioral strengths and decreased internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors from enrollment to 18 months follow-up. Children with a history of traumatic events improved more slowly than children without such a history on both strengths and internalizing problem behaviors, even after controlling for dosage of services received and other characteristics previously found to predict outcomes. Gender was also related to improvement in internalizing symptoms. Results highlight the continued need to assess the impact of exposure to traumatic events for children served in a system of care
The Impact of Youth and Family Risk Factors on Service Recommendations and Delivery in a School-Based System of Care
The present study examines the impact of child and family risk factors on service access for youth and families in a school-based system of care. Regression analyses examined the relationships between risk factors and services recommended, services received, and dosage of services received. Logistic regression analyses examined the relationship between risk factors and whether or not youth received specific types of services within the system of care. Results revealed that youth with a personal or family history of substance use had more services recommended than youth without these risk factors, while youth with a family history of substance use received more services. Youth with a history of substance use received a significantly higher dosage of services overall. Finally, history of family mental illness was associated with receiving mental health and operational services (e.g., family advocacy, emergency funds). Implications and limitations are discussed. Systems of care were developed in response to the need for more appropriate and accessible preventive and treatment services for children with severe emotional and behavioral difficulties and their families. In 1992, the United States Congress established the Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services (CMHS) for Children and Their Families Program, which has provided funding to 126 communities over the past 14 years for the development of local systems of care.1 A system of care is a coordinated network of community-based services and supports that is created to meet the challenges of children
