    Linear complementarity problems on extended second order cones

    In this paper, we study the linear complementarity problems on extended second order cones. We convert a linear complementarity problem on an extended second order cone into a mixed complementarity problem on the non-negative orthant. We state necessary and sufficient conditions for a point to be a solution of the converted problem. We also present solution strategies for this problem, such as the Newton method and Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. Finally, we present some numerical examples

    The evolution of dynamical perturbations is examined in nuclear multifragmentation in the frame of Vlasov equation. Both plane wave and bubble type of perturbations are investigated in the presence of surface (Yukawa) forces. An energy condition is given for the allowed type of instabilities and the time scale of the exponential growth of the instabilities is calculated.     Regulation of AQP0 water permeability is enhanced by cooperativity.

    Aquaporin 0 (AQP0), essential for lens clarity, is a tetrameric protein composed of four identical monomers, each of which has its own water pore. The water permeability of AQP0 expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes can be approximately doubled by changes in calcium concentration or pH. Although each monomer pore functions as a water channel, under certain conditions the pores act cooperatively. In other words, the tetramer is the functional unit. In this paper, we show that changes in external pH and calcium can induce an increase in water permeability that exhibits either a positive cooperativity switch-like increase in water permeability or an increase in water permeability in which each monomer acts independently and additively. Because the concentrations of calcium and hydrogen ions increase toward the center of the lens, a concentration signal could trigger a regulatory change in AQP0 water permeability. It thus seems plausible that the cooperative modes of water permeability regulation by AQP0 tetramers mediated by decreased pH and elevated calcium are the physiologically important ones in the living lens

    Bisemigroups are algebras equipped with two independent associative operations. Labeled finite sp-biposets may serve as a possible representation of the elements of the free bisemigroups. For finite sp-biposets, an accepting device, called parenthesizing automaton, was introduced in [6], and it was proved that its expressive power is equivalent to both algebraic recognizability and monadic second order definability. In this paper, we show, how this concept of parenthesizing automaton can be generalized for infinite biposets in a way that the equivalence of regularity (defined by acceptance with automata), recognizability (defined by homomorphisms and finite ω-bisemigroups) and MSO-definability remains true

    A hierarchy theorem for regular languages over free bisemigroups

    In this article a question left open in [2] is answered. In particular, we show that it is essential that in the definition of parenthesizing automata an arbitrary number of parentheses can be used. Moreover, we prove that the classes Regm of languages accepted by a parenthesizing automaton with at most m pairs of parentheses form a strict hierarchy. In fact, this hierarchy is proper for all alphabets

    Effects of Photosensitization and Low-Power Helium-Neon Laser Irradiation on Liposomes and Cell Membranes

    Low-power He-Ne laser irradiation causes a well-defined and energy dependent cell destruction of in vitro cultured cell lines sensitized by hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD). The mechanism of this photosensitization was studied by measuring with polarization microscopic, scanning electron microscopic, and electron-spin-resonance (ESR) spectroscopic parameters. The cell damage caused by photosensitization and laser irradiation seems to be a complex process, however the biological membranes seem to be one of the primary targets. The energy of laser light causes rotation and resonance changes of macromolecules and the water molecules, resulting in an increased structural order of the submembraneous components in the living cells, detectable microscopically. During the photosensitization process, the red (630 nm) He-Ne laser light, during a one-photon energy activation, causes excitation of hematoporphyrin molecules to their triplet state. The excitation of HPD molecules results in a multi-step, free-radical generating effect, measured by ESR spectroscopy and studied by the ultrastructural changes of membrane organization and cell shape. Similar effects could be observed on in vitro lipid-water liposome membranes
