Malmquist Indices of Pre and Post-Deregulation Productivity, Efficiency and Technological Change in the Singaporean Banking Sector
By the end of the 1990s, the Singaporean government had recognised the need to open up its banking sector so as to remain competitive in the global economy. The Monetary Authority of Singapore thus began deregulation of the banking sector in 1999 to strengthening the competitiveness of local banks relative to their foreign competition through mergers. This paper employs a nonparametric Malmquist productivity index to provide measure of productivity, technological change and efficiency gains over the period 1995-2005. The findings reveal some total factor productivity growth associated with deregulation and scale efficiency improvement largely from mergers amongst the local banks.Efficiency, productivity; deregulation; Malmquist indices; banking
A New SX Phe Star in the Globular Cluster M15
A new SX Phe star (labelled SXP1) found from CCD photometry is the first
to be discovered in the globular cluster M15. It is a blue straggler and is
located 102\arcsec.8 north and 285\arcsec.6 west of the center of M15
\citep{har96}. Mean magnitudes of SXP1 are = 18$\fm$671 and
= 18\fm445. The amplitude of variability of SXP1 is measured to be . From multiple-frequency analysis based on the Fourier
decomposition method, we detect two very closely separated pulsating
frequencies: the primary frequency at c/d for both - and
-bands, and the secondary frequency at c/d for the -band and
24.343 c/d for the -band. This star is the second among known SX Phe stars
found to pulsate with very closely separated frequencies ().
These frequencies may be explained by excitation of nonradial modes; however,
we have an incomplete understanding of this phenomenon in the case of SX Phe
stars with relatively high amplitudes. The metallicity-period and the
variability amplitude-period relations for SXP1 in M15 are found to be

The Spitzer C2D Survey of Nearby Dense Cores: Jet and Molecular Outflow Associated With A Young Stellar Object in Core A of L1251
A long infrared jet has been discovered by the Spitzer c2d Legacy Program in core A of L1251. It is associated with a very embedded Class 0 object with an accretion luminosity of about 0.9 L(circle dot) derived by radiative transfer model fitting to the observed spectral energy distribution. Comparing the observed Infrared Array Camera colors along the infrared jet with those calculated from a model of an admixture of gas with a power-law temperature distribution indicates that the jet is possibly created by a paraboloidal bow shock propagating into the ambient medium of n(H(2)) = 10(5) cm(-3). In addition, the variation of the power-law index along the jet suggests that the portion of hot gas decreases with distance from the jet engine. The molecular outflow in this region has been mapped for the first time using CO data. SMA observations of the proto brown dwarf candidate SSTB213 J041757
Context. The previously identified source SSTB213 J041757 is a proto brown
dwarf candidate in Taurus, which has two possible components A and B. It was
found that component B is probably a class 0/I proto brown dwarf associated
with an extended envelope.
Aims. Studying molecular outflows from young brown dwarfs provides important
insight into brown dwarf formation mechanisms, particularly brown dwarfs at the
earliest stages such as class 0, I. We therefore conducted a search for
molecular outflows from SSTB213 J041757.
Methods. We observed SSTB213 J041757 with the Submillimeter Array to search
for CO molecular outflow emission from the source.
Results. Our CO maps do not show any outflow emission from the proto brown
dwarf candidate.
Conclusions. The non-detection implies that the molecular outflows from the
source are weak; deeper observations are therefore needed to probe the outflows

Characterization of volatile organic compounds at a roadside environment in Hong Kong: An investigation of influences after air pollution control strategies
Vehicular emission is one of the important anthropogenic pollution sources for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Four characterization campaigns were conducted at a representative urban roadside environment in Hong Kong between May 2011 and February 2012. Carbon monoxide (CO) and VOCs including methane (CH4), non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), halocarbons, and alkyl nitrates were quantified. Both mixing ratios and compositions of the target VOCs show ignorable seasonal variations. Except CO, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tracers of propane, i-butane and n-butane are the three most abundant VOCs, which increased significantly as compared with the data measured at the same location in 2003. Meanwhile, the mixing ratios of diesel- and gasoline tracers such as ethyne, alkenes, aromatics, halogenated, and nitrated hydrocarbons decreased by at least of 37%. The application of advanced multivariate receptor modeling technique of positive matrix factorization (PMF) evidenced that the LPG fuel consumption is the largest pollution source, accounting for 60 ± 5% of the total quantified VOCs at the roadside location. The sum of ozone formation potential (OFP) for the target VOCs was 300.9 Όg-O3 m-3, which was 47% lower than the value of 567.3 Όg-O3 m-3 measured in 2003. The utilization of LPG as fuel in public transport (i.e., taxis and mini-buses) contributed 51% of the sum of OFP, significantly higher than the contributions from gasoline- (16%) and diesel-fueled (12%) engine emissions. Our results demonstrated the effectiveness of the switch from diesel to LPG-fueled engine for taxis and mini-buses implemented by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government between the recent ten years, in additional to the execution of substitution to LPG-fueled engine and restrictions of the vehicular emissions in compliance with the updated European emission standards
The Connection between Star-Forming Galaxies, AGN Host Galaxies and Early-Type Galaxies in the SDSS
We present a study of the connection between star-forming galaxies, AGN host
galaxies, and normal early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
(SDSS). Using the SDSS DR5 and DR4plus data, we select our early-type galaxy
sample in the color versus color-gradient space, and we classify the spectral
types of the selected early-type galaxies into normal, star-forming, Seyfert,
and LINER classes, using several spectral line flux ratios. We investigate the
slope in the fundamental space for each class of early-type galaxies and find
that there are obvious differences in the slopes of the fundamental planes
(FPs) among the different classes of early-type galaxies, in the sense that the
slopes for Seyferts and star-forming galaxies are flatter than those for normal
galaxies and LINERs. This may be the first identification of the systematic
variation of the FP slope among the subclasses of early-type galaxies. The
difference in the FP slope might be caused by the difference in the degree of
nonhomology among different classes or by the difference of gas contents in
their merging progenitors. One possible scenario is that the AGN host galaxies
and star-forming galaxies are formed by gas-rich merging and that they may
evolve into normal early-type galaxies after finishing their star formation or
