    Magnetoresistance of a 2-dimensional electron gas in a random magnetic field

    We report magnetoresistance measurements on a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) made from a high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure, where the externally applied magnetic field was expelled from regions of the semiconductor by means of superconducting lead grains randomly distributed on the surface of the sample. A theoretical explanation in excellent agreement with the experiment is given within the framework of the semiclassical Boltzmann equation.Comment: REVTEX 3.0, 11 pages, 3 Postscript figures appended.     Integer Quantum Hall Effect in Double-Layer Systems

    We consider the localization of independent electron orbitals in double-layer two-dimensional electron systems in the strong magnetic field limit. Our study is based on numerical Thouless number calculations for realistic microscopic models and on transfer matrix calculations for phenomenological network models. The microscopic calculations indicate a crossover regime for weak interlayer tunneling in which the correlation length exponent appears to increase.     S(k) for Haldane Gap Antiferromagnets: Large-scale Numerical Results vs. Field Theory and Experiment

    The structure function, S(k), for the s=1, Haldane gap antiferromagnetic chain, is measured accurately using the recent density matrix renormalization group method, with chain-length 100. Excellent agreement with the nonlinear σ\sigma model prediction is obtained, both at k≈πk\approx \pi where a single magnon process dominates and at k≈0k\approx 0 where a two magnon process dominates. We repeat our calculation with crystal field anisotropy chosen to model NENP, obtaining good agreement with both field theory predictions and recent experiments.     Equal Time Correlations in Haldane Gap Antiferromagnets

    The S=1S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain both with and without single ion anisotropy is studied. Using the recently proposed density matrix renormalization group technique we calculate the energy gaps as well as several different correlation functions. The two gaps, Δ∣∣,Δ⊥\Delta_{||}, \Delta_\perp, along with associated correlation lengths and velocities are determined. The numerical results are shown to be in good agreement with theoretical predictions derived from the nonlinear sigma model and a free boson model. We also study the S=1/2S=1/2 excitations that occur at the ends of open chains; in particular we study the behavior associated with open boundary conditions, using a model of S=1/2S=1/2 spins coupled to the free bosons.Comment: 32 pages, uufiles encoded REVTEX 3.0, 19 postscript figures included, UBCTP-93-02

    Enhanced Cooperation in an Asymmetric Model of Tax Competition

    This paper analyzes enhanced cooperation agreements in corporate taxation in a three country tax competition model where countries differ in size. We characterize equilibrium tax rates and the optimal tax responses due to the formation of an enhanced cooperation agreement. Conditions for strategic complementarity or strategic substitutability of tax rates are crucial for the welfare effects of enhanced cooperation. Simulations show that enhanced cooperation is unlikely to be feasible for small countries. When enhanced cooperation is feasible, it may hamper global harmonization. Only when countries are of similar size is global harmonization a feasible outcome

    The superconductor-insulator transition in 2D dirty boson systems

    Universal properties of the zero temperature superconductor-insulator transition in two-dimensional amorphous films are studied by extensive Monte Carlo simulations of bosons in a disordered medium. We report results for both short-range and long-range Coulomb interactions for several different points in parameter space. In all cases we observe a transition from a superconducting phase to an insulating Bose glass phase. {}From finite-size scaling of our Monte Carlo data we determine the universal conductivity σ∗\sigma^* and the critical exponents at the transition. The result σ∗=(0.55±0.06)(2e)2/h\sigma^* = (0.55 \pm 0.06) (2e)^2/h for bosons with long-range Coulomb interaction is roughly consistent with experiments reported so far. We also find σ∗=(0.14±0.03)(2e)2/h\sigma^* = (0.14 \pm 0.03) (2e)^2/h for bosons with short-range interactions.Comment: Revtex 3.0, 54 pages, 17 figures included, UBCTP-93-01

    Smooth Muscle Cell Phenotype Modulation and Contraction on Native and Cross-Linked Polyelectrolyte Multilayers

    Smooth muscle cells convert between a motile, proliferative “synthetic ” phenotype and a sessile, “contractile ” phenotype. The ability to manipulate the phenotype of aortic smooth muscle cells with thin biocompatible polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMUs) with common surface chemical characteristics but varying stiffness was investigated. The stiffness of (PAH/ PAA) PEMUs was varied by heating to form covalent amide bond cross-links between the layers. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed that cross-linked PEMUs were thinner than those that were not cross-linked. AFM nanoindentation demonstrated that the Young’s modulus ranged from 6 MPa for hydrated native PEMUs to more than 8 GPa for maximally cross-linked PEMUs. Rat aortic A7r5 smooth muscle cells cultured on native PEMUs exhibited morphology and motility of synthetic cells and expression of the synthetic phenotype markers vimentin, tropomyosin 4, and nonmuscle myosin heavy chain IIB (nmMHCIIB). In comparison, cells cultured on maximally cross-linked PEMUs exhibited the phenotype markers calponin, smooth muscle myosin heavy chain (smMHC), myocardin, transgelin, and smooth muscle R-actin (smActin) that are characteristic of the smooth muscle “contractile ” phenotype. Consistent with those cells being “contractile”, A7r5 cells grown on cross-linked PEMUs produced contractile force when stimulated with a Ca2+ ionophore

    Cross-Border Acquisitions and Corporate Taxes: Efficiency and Tax Revenues

    We find that reduced foreign corporate taxes may lead to inefficient foreign acquisitions if complementarities between foreign and domestic assets are low, and to efficient foreign acquisitions if such complementarities are high. Moreover, with large complementarities, foreign acquisitions can increase domestic tax revenues. The reason is that in the bidding competition between the foreign firms, all benefits from the acquisition, including tax advantages and evaded taxes, are competed away and captured by the domestic seller which, in turn, pays capital gains tax on the proceeds. Technical issues in the tax code, such as the treatment of goodwill deductibility, is also shown to crucially affect the pattern of foreign acquisitions

    RE: pedagogy – after neutrality

    Within the UK and in many parts of the world, official accounts of what it is to make sense of religion are framed within a rhetorics of neutrality in which such study is premised upon the possibility of dispassionate engagement and analysis. This paper, which is largely theoretical in scope, explores both the affordances and the costs of such an approach which has become ‘black boxed’ on account of the work that it achieves. A series of new orientations within the academy that are broadly associated with post-structuralist philosophies, feminist and post-colonial studies, together with insights from Science and Technology Studies, question the plausibility of these claims for neutrality whilst in turn raising a series of new questions and priorities. It therefore becomes necessary to re-think and re-frame what it is to make sense of religious and cultural difference after neutrality. The gathering and co-ordination of new planes of sense-making that are responsive to an emergent series of epistemological, ontological, and ethical orientations are considered. Some of the distinctive pedagogical implications of such an approach that engages material practice, difference and uncertainty are then entertained
