The SUMMIT trial: a field comparison of buprenorphine versus methadone maintenance treatment.

    Get PDF
This prospective patient-preference study examined the effectiveness in practice of methadone versus buprenorphine maintenance treatment and the beliefs of subjects regarding these drugs. A total of 361 opiate-dependent individuals (89% of those eligible, presenting for treatment over 2 years at a drug service in England) received rapid titration then flexible dosing with methadone or buprenorphine; 227 patients chose methadone (63%) and 134 buprenorphine (37%). Participants choosing methadone had more severe substance abuse and psychiatric and physical problems but were more likely to remain in treatment. Survival analysis indicated those prescribed methadone were over twice as likely to be retained (hazard ratio for retention was 2.08 and 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.49-2.94 for methadone vs. buprenorphine), However, those retained on buprenorphine were more likely to suppress illicit opiate use (odds ratio = 2.136, 95% CI = 1.509-3.027, p < .001) and achieve detoxification. Buprenorphine may also recruit more individuals to treatment because 28% of those choosing buprenorphine (10% of the total sample) stated they would not have accessed treatment with methadone

The Abacus Cosmos: A Suite of Cosmological N-body Simulations

We present a public data release of halo catalogs from a suite of 125 cosmological NN-body simulations from the Abacus project. The simulations span 40 wwCDM cosmologies centered on the Planck 2015 cosmology at two mass resolutions, 4×1010  h−1M⊙4\times 10^{10}\;h^{-1}M_\odot and 1×1010  h−1M⊙1\times 10^{10}\;h^{-1}M_\odot, in 1.1  h−1Gpc1.1\;h^{-1}\mathrm{Gpc} and 720  h−1Mpc720\;h^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc} boxes, respectively. The boxes are phase-matched to suppress sample variance and isolate cosmology dependence. Additional volume is available via 16 boxes of fixed cosmology and varied phase; a few boxes of single-parameter excursions from Planck 2015 are also provided. Catalogs spanning z=1.5z=1.5 to 0.10.1 are available for friends-of-friends and Rockstar halo finders and include particle subsamples. All data products are available at https://lgarrison.github.io/AbacusCosmosComment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. Additional figures added for mass resolution convergence tests, and additional redshifts added for existing tests. Matches ApJS accepted versio

A 'p-n' diode with hole and electron-doped lanthanum manganite

The hole-doped manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and the electron-doped manganite La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 undergo an insulator to metal transition at around 250 K, above which both behave as a polaronic semiconductor. We have successfully fabricated an epitaxial trilayer (La0.7Ca0.3MnO3/SrTiO3/La0.7Ce0.3MnO3), where SrTiO3 is an insulator. At room temperature, i.e. in the semiconducting regime, it exhibits asymmetric current-voltage (I-V) characteristics akin to a p-n diode. The observed asymmetry in the I-V characteristics disappears at low temperatures where both the manganite layers are metallic. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of such a p-n diode, using the polaronic semiconducting regime of doped manganites.Comment: PostScript text and 2 figures, to be published in Appl. Single-phase series active conditioner for the compensation of voltage harmonics, sags, swell and flicker

    Get PDF
Simulation and experimental results shown on this paper describes the performance of a developed Single-Phase Series Active Conditioner that regulates the voltage being delivered to a load. This Custom Power device is a solution for power quality issues related with voltage amplitude variations, which are responsible for innumerous flaws in industrial processes which brings with it high financial losses. The Single-Phase Series Active Conditioner is a back-to-back converter, composed by two power converters sharing a common DC link. One of the converters is series connected to the electrical grid, whereas the other one is shunt connected. The first is used to compensate load voltage, and the second to regulate the DC link voltage. This paper shows the results obtained with the Series Active Conditioner in Sag, Swell and Flicker events, and also Voltage Harmonics compensation, in order to deliver to the load a sinusoidal voltage, at nominal amplitude.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT

The Mass of the Convective Zone in FGK Main Sequence Stars and the Effect of Accreted Planetary Material on Apparent Metallicity Determinations

    Get PDF
The mass of the outer convective zone in FGK main sequence stars decreases dramatically with stellar mass. Therefore, any contamination of a star's atmosphere by accreted planetary material should affect hotter stars much more than cool stars. If recent suggestions that high metal abundances in stars with planets are caused by planetesimal accretion are correct, then metallicity enhancements in earlier-type stars with planets should be very pronounced. No such trend is seen, however.Comment: Submitted ApJ Letters March 26th; accepted April 30th. 12 pages, 2 figure
