Linearized Gravity in Brane Backgrounds
A treatment of linearized gravity is given in the Randall-Sundrum background.
The graviton propagator is found in terms of the scalar propagator, for which
an explicit integral expression is provided. This reduces to the
four-dimensional propagator at long distances along the brane, and provides
estimates of subleading corrections. Asymptotics of the propagator off the
brane yields exponential falloff of gravitational fields due to matter on the
brane. This implies that black holes bound to the brane have a "pancake"-like
shape in the extra dimension, and indicates validity of a perturbative
treatment off the brane. Some connections with the AdS/CFT correspondence are

Scanning optical pyrometer for measuring temperatures in hollow cathodes
Life-limiting processes in hollow cathodes are determined largely by the temperature of the electron emitter. To support cathode life assessment, a noncontact temperature measurement technique which employs a stepper motor-driven fiber optic probe was developed. The probe is driven inside the hollow cathode and collects light radiated by the hot interior surface of the emitter. Ratio pyrometry is used to determine the axial temperature profile. Thermocouples on the orifice plate provide measurements of the external temperature during cathode operation and are used to calibrate the pyrometer system in situ with a small oven enclosing the externally heated cathode. Polar orbit electrostatic charging of objects in shuttle wake
A survey of DMSP data has uncovered several cases where precipitating auroral electron fluxes are both sufficiently intense and energetic to charge spacecraft materials such as teflon to very large potentials in the absence of ambient ion currents. Analytical bounds are provided which show that these measured environments can cause surface potentials in excess of several hundred volts to develop on objects in the orbiter wake for particular vehicle orientations
Growth, Characterization, and Electrochemical Properties of Doped n-Type KTaO_3 Photoanodes
The effects of compositionally induced changes on the semiconducting properties, optical response, chemical stability, and overall performance of KTaO_3 photoanodes in photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells have been investigated. Single crystals of n-type Ca- and Ba-doped KTaO_3 with carrier concentrations ranging from 0.45 to 11.5×10^(19) cm^(−3) were grown and characterized as photoanodes in basic aqueous electrolyte PEC cells. The PEC properties of the crystals, including the photocurrent, photovoltage, and flatband potential in contact with 8.5 M NaOH(aq) were relatively independent of whether Ca or Ba was used to produce the semiconducting form of KTaO_3. All of the Ca- or Ba-doped KTaO_3 single-crystal photoanodes were chemically stable in the electrolyte and, based on the open-circuit potential and the band-edge positions, were capable of unassisted photochemical H_2 and O_2 evolution from H_2O. The minority-carrier diffusion lengths values were small and comparable to the depletion region width. Photoanodic currents were only observed for photoanode illumination with light above the bandgap (i.e., λ<340 nm). The maximum external quantum yield occurred at λ=255 nm (4.85 eV), and the depletion width plus the minority-carrier diffusion length ranged from 20 to 65 nm for the various KTaO_3-based photoanode materials
Echo spectroscopy of bulk Bogoliubov excitations in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates
We propose and demonstrate an echo method to reduce the inhomogeneous
linewidth of Bogoliubov excitations, in a harmonically-trapped Bose-Einstein
condensate. Our proposal includes the transfer of excitations with momentum +q
to -q using a double two photon Bragg process, in which a substantial reduction
of the inhomogeneous broadening is calculated. Furthermore, we predict an
enhancement in the method's efficiency for low momentum due to many-body
effects. The echo can also be implemented by using a four photon process, as is
