    Towards Crew-Centered, Mission-Oriented Space Flight Training

    This poster describes a training approach that applies empirically derived principles of training to reimagining the overall design of NASA's space flight training program. The poster is focused specifically on the design of astronaut training for NASA's future deep space, exploration missions to Mars. We briefly describe NASA's space flight training practices during the Apollo and Space Shuttle eras as well as NASA's current practices for training astronauts for their missions to the International Space Station. We provide an overview of NASA's current concepts for a mission to Mars to scope our training approach. We envision a new space flight training approach which we term crew-centered, mission oriented training, inspired by the design approach offered in the context of airline pilot training by Barshi. We apply research-based training principles reviewed by Kole and his colleagues, as well as by other researchers in training science, into real-world, practical guidelines for the particular context of training astronauts for a mission to Mars

    Proton-Coupled Electron Flow in Protein Redox Machines

    Electron transfer (ET) reactions are fundamental steps in biological redox processes. Respiration is a case in point: at least 15 ET reactions are required to take reducing equivalents from NADH, deposit them in O_2, and generate the electrochemical proton gradient that drives ATP synthesis. Most of these reactions involve quantum tunneling between weakly coupled redox cofactors (ET distances > 10 Ã…) embedded in the interiors of folded proteins. Here we review experimental findings that have shed light on the factors controlling these distant ET events. We also review work on a sensitizer-modified copper protein photosystem in which multistep electron tunneling (hopping) through an intervening tryptophan is orders of magnitude faster than the corresponding single-step ET reaction.If proton transfers are coupled to ET events, we refer to the processes as proton coupled ET, or PCET, a term introduced by Huynh and Meyer in 1981. Here we focus on two protein redox machines, photosystem II and ribonucleotide reductase, where PCET processes involving tyrosines are believed to be critical for function.     Proton transfer from the triplet excited state of brominated naphthol to a difluoroboryl bridged Co^I-diglyoxime complex, forming Co^(III)H, was monitored via transient absorption. The second-order rate constant for Co^(III)H formation is in the range (3.5−4.7) × 10^9 M^(−1) s^(−1), with proton transfer coupled to excited-state deactivation of the photoacid. Co^(III)H is subsequently reduced by excess Co^I-diglyoxime in solution to produce Co^(II)H (k_(red) = 9.2 × 10^6 M^(−1) s^(−1)), which is then protonated to yield Co^(II)-diglyoxime and H_2

    A Comparison of the Social-Adaptive Perspective and Functionalist Perspective on Guilt and Shame

    Within the field of guilt and shame two competing perspectives have been advanced. The first, the social-adaptive perspective, proposes that guilt is an inherently adaptive emotion and shame is an inherently maladaptive emotion. Thus, those interested in moral character development and psychopathology should work to increase an individual’s guilt-proneness and decrease an individual’s shame-proneness. The functionalist perspective, in contrast, argues that both guilt and shame can serve a person adaptively or maladaptively—depending on the situational appropriateness, duration, intensity, and so forth. This paper reviews the research conducted supporting both positions; critiques some issues with the most widely used guilt- and shame-proneness measure in the social-adaptive research (the TOSCA) and discusses the differences in results found when assessing guilt and shame at the state versus trait level. The conclusion drawn is that although there is broad support for the functionalist perspective across a wide variety of state and trait guilt/shame studies, the functionalist perspective does not yet have the wealth of data supporting it that has been generated by the social-adaptive perspective using the TOSCA. Thus, before a dominant perspective can be identified, researchers need to (1) do more research assessing how the social-adaptive perspective compares to the functionalist perspective at the state level and (2) do more trait research within the functionalist perspective to compare functionalist guilt- and shame-proneness measures with the TOSCA
